Abstract

Apparatus for bonding at least two plies of a fibrous web, comprises a first roller having an outer periphery, with at least one embossing protuberance 61 provided on the outer periphery, and a second roller 63 which has an outer periphery and is elastic in a radial direction. The second roller 63 comprises at least an inner layer and an outer layer that is harder than the inner layer. The second roller 63 together with the first roller forms a nip through which the at least two plies are to be fed. An embossing element 60 is located on top of at least one of the embossing protuberance(s) 61. The embossing area of each embossing element 60 is smaller than the embossing area of the corresponding embossing protuberance(s) 61 so that the at least two plies are bonded at discrete locations corresponding to the embossing elements. The embossing element(s) 60 are smaller in height than the corresponding embossing protuberance(s) 61.
