Abstract

The term "toby" is a common name given a water stopcock that is perhaps installed at the boundary of a road and a section of land on which a house or building is to be built. A toby allows water supply to the said section to be turned off to facilitate plumbing work that is to be performed on the house or building. The current toby has an annular housing with an opening at its upper end (14). It is said that the upper end is defined by a peripheral rim (18). There is also a lid (26) and a hinge (28) pivotally connecting the lid to an inside part of the rim whereby the lid can be swung between a closed position across the opening and an open position raised substantially clear of the opening. A drainage passage below the hinge whereby liquid and detritus entering about the hinge can be drain or washed away from the hinge to the interior of the housing.
