A £1 i.. f. J 0T'J0Ni9&'6' Publication Darte: P.O. Journal, No: PATENTS FORM NO. 5 PATENTS ACT 19 53 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION "A WIRE ENGAGING DEVICE" GALLAGHER ELECTRONICS LIMITED, a New Zealand company of Kaiiikatea Drive, Hamilton, New Zealand hereby declare the invention, for which *3^We pray that a patent may be granted to 4fjfe/us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: TITLE: ^/We ©848 5 This invention relates to wire engaging devices for supporting wires relative to fence standards.
F.or some time now the Applicant has produced for the New Zealand and overseas markets, an electric fence insulator having a wire mounting portion at one end and a fork rod engaging member at the other end, the insulator being used to engage with rod-type electric fence standards with the form engaging member engaging with the rod. The insulator is secured to the rod by the application and tightening of a nut on to the threaded end of the forked portion. Electric fence wires are then threaded through the wire mounting portion. The insulator can be conveniently adjusted for height on the fence standard and the nut is tightented once the desired height is selected. The insulators are moulded in plastics, and some difficulty has been experienced with deflection of opposed limbs of the forked ends of the in sul at tors when the nut is tightened.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a wire engaging device as described including means for preventing the deflection described.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description which is given by way of example.
According to the present invention therefore there is provided a wire engaging device comprising a body having a wire mounting portion at one end and a rod engaging member at -2 2024SS the other end, said rod engaging member having a lengthwise slot opening to the free end thereof, and an external thread upon which a complementary threaded clamping member is mountable, a spacer tab being fixed to one limb of the slotted rod engaging member, said spacer tab being adapted in use to be positioned between opposed faces of the slot to prevent excessive deflection of the ends of the limbs of the rod engaging member relative to oneanother when the clamping member is applied to the thread.
Aspects of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1: is a side view of a wire engaging device in accordance with the present invention, and Figure 2: is a side view of a clamping member for the wire engaging device of Figure 1, and Figure 3: is a further side view of the wire engaging device of Figure 1, and Figure 4: is an end view of the wire engaging device of Figure 3, taken in the direction of arrow 4, and Figure 5: is a side view similar to that of Figure 3 showing the wire engaging device fixed to an electric fence standard and supporting a fence wire.
N.Z. PATENT OFFICE -3- : ~~~ - 16 APR J986 2 0848 5 With respect to the drawings and the embodiment illustrated the wire engaging device comprises a body generally indicated by arrow 1 having a wire mounting portion generally indicated by arrow 2 at one end, and a rod engaging member generally indicated by arrow 3 at the other end.
The rod engaging member 3 has a slot 4 therein opening to the' free end thereof and an external thread 5 upon which a complementary threaded clamping member generally indicated by arrow 6 is mountable. The aforegoing are all features of the prior art devices previously mentioned.
In the example illustrated the wire mounting portion 2 comprises a boss 7 mounting a tapered head generally indicated by arrow 8. The tapered head 8 is divided into two sections 9 each of which is provided with a segmented body part 10 which extends from the boss 7 and an overhanging part 11 both of the sections 9 being divided by an opening 12. When the wire engaging device is used to support an electric fence wire 13 (see Figure 5) the wire is engaged with the head via the opening 12 and is secured beneath the overhanging parts 11(on a plane approximately ninety degrees removed from the plane of the opening 12) to secure the wire.
When the wire engaging device is fitted to an electric fence standard 14 (Figure 5) the standard is engaged in the base of the slot 4 and once a correct vertical position is selected the clamping member 6 can be applied and tightened.
The clamping member 6 and/or the head 8 of the wire mounting portion 2 can be provided with key slots or knobs (not shown) to assist an operator apply torque when the clamping means is engaged or loosened.
In accordance with the present invention one limb 15 of the rod engaging member 3 is provided with a rectilinear spacer tab 16 integrally moulded with that limb and attached to the limb by a flexible cord 17. In the embodiment illustrated the limb 18 is provided with a raised edge 19 on the inner surface of the slot 4, When the wire engaging device is engaged with a standard 14 such as is illustrated bu Figure 5 the tab 16 which has flat faces 16A is placed in an upright position as illustrated to span and take up the gap between the limbs 15,18 to ensure that only minimal deflection on the ends of the limbs occurs when the clamping member 6 is tightened. Excessive deflection of the free ends of the limbs 15,18 of the rod engaging member 3 is prevented. The raised edge 19 prevents the tab 16 slipping.
Preferably the wire engaging device is moulded in one piece from a plastics material.
Aspects of the present, invention have been described by way of example only and it will be appreciated that modifications and additions thereto may be made without departing from the scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims. 208485
