Description

New Zealand Paient Spedficaiion for Paient Number 1 90367 190367 Patents Form No. 5 After Provisional No. 190367 of 3 November 19 79 PATENTS ACT 19 5 3 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION "A CLIP FOR A FENCE DROPPER" I, JOSEPH GEORGE ALLEN, of Kerrs Road, Burnham, Christchurch, New Zealand, a British subject and New Zealand citizen, hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- \C. 1 190367 This invention relates to a clip for a fence dropper and more particularly relates to a clip used for locking a fence wire to a fence dropper.
A number of different constructions of fence dropper are currently available and are used by farmers. For example the fence dropper may be a length of metal rod, wood or wire which extends substantially vertically. The fence dropper being used to maintain fence wires in spaced apart relationship at intervals between the strainer fence posts.
An object of the present invention is to provide a clip for a fence dropper which clip is economic to manufacture and simple to use with a wire or rod-like fence dropper.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a clip for a fence dropper which clip when in position securely holds a fence wire in position on a fence dropper.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention which should be considered in all its novel aspects will become apparent from the following description.
According to the present invention there is provided a clip for holding a fence wire at right angles relative to a fence batten, stake or post, the clip is constructed from a resilient material and has two arms which diverge outwardly from each side of an arcuate shaped base portion in which the arcuate part thereof is greater than 180 degrees, each arm having an aperture therein which when the arms are fitted to a fence batten, stake or post are aligned generally vertically, the arrangement being such that the clip is fitted to the fence batten, stake or post by threading same thereon when the arms are held parallel to each other, and when the- arms are released ; x.2. • ; : | - 2 - 1 ©SEP 1984 190367 they move apart so that the edges of the apertures lock against the surface of the fence batten, stake or post to maintain the clip in position thereon.
Further aspects of the present invention which should be considered in all its novel aspects will become apparent from the following descriptions which are given by way of example only.
An example of the present invention will now be described with reference to the drawings accompanying the provisional specification in which: Figure 1: is a perspective view of a clip according to the present invention shown in the condition in which a fence dropper may be inserted through apertures therein; Figure 2; is a perspective view from above of the clip shown in Figure 1 showing -the clip locked in position on the fence dropper; and the accompanying Tz-iV drawing in which Figure 3 shows a modified form of ^ c' clip.
~\ The clip according to the present invention described herein by way of example has been designed for use with a fence dropper constructed from a rod like material. For example the fence dropper may be constructed from a length of metal rod or length of heavy gauge wire.
The clip generally indicated by arrow 1 in the drawing is shown holding a fence wire 2 in position near to a fence dropper 3.
The clip 1 may be constructed from any resilient material, for example a resilient plastics material or spring metal material. Preferably the clip 1 is constructed 190 steel and it is to be appreciated that the surface thereof can be painted or coated with an anti-corrosive substance, for example, each clip 1 may be hot dip galvanised.
The clip 1 has two arms 4 and 5 which are joined together by an arcuate shaped base portion 6. The base portion 6 is shaped and dimensioned so as to receive . therein the fence wire 2. It is to be appreciated that the base portion 6 is dimensioned to suit the gauge fencing wire with which it is to be used.
The arms 4 and 5 of the clip 1 are biased away from each other in the direction of the arrows 7. Each arm has formed therein an aperture 8 through which the fence dropper 3 is passed.
In order to position a fence wire 2 adjacent the fence dropper 3 the clip 1 is initially held in the condition shown in Figure 1 with the arms 4 and 5 thereof substantially parallel to each other. In this position the apertures 8 are aligned to allow the fence dropper to pass therethrough. When in this position the arms 4 and 5 are released and bias therein moves them to the condition shown in Figure 2. In this position the sides of the apertures 8 lock firmly against the outer surface of the substantially vertically positioned fence dropper.
In use a plurality of substantially similar clips are positioned on a fence dropper so as to position therein the plurality of wires which constitute the fence. 4 3 0 MAY 1983

Claims (5)

1 90 The arms 4 or 5 may be shaped or provided with slots therein to allow the arms to be engaged with a fence wire and dropper which are already positioned. Thus referring to Figure 3 slots 9 and 10 pass from the aperture 8 to the edge of the arms. These slots 9 and 10 are designed to have a thickness which will' generally be narrower than the diameter of the apertures. The slots may extend from either side of the respective arms or may in some circumstances extend from the front edge 11 and 12 respectively of the arms 4 and 5. This clip can be attached to the fence wire and then the fence dropper fitted to the clip. Each arm can be twisted sideways which increases the size of the respective slots and allow the fence dropper to be inserted down the slot, the clip can then be released to allow the arms to lock the clip onto the dropper as described above. A particular example of the present invention has been described by way of example and it is envisaged that modifications and improvements thereto may take place without departing from the scope thereof. WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. A clip for holding a fence wire at right angles relative to a fence batten, stake or post, the clip is constructed from a resilient material and has two arms which diverge outwardly from each side of an arcuate shaped base portion in which the arcuate part thereof is greater than 180 degrees, each arm having an aperture therein which when the arms are fitted to a fence batten, stake or post are aligned generally vertically, the arrangement being such that the clip is fitted to the fence batten, stake or post by threading same thereon when the arms are held parallel to each other, and when the arms are released they move apart so that the edges of the apertures lock against the surface of the fence batten, stake or post to maintain the clip in position thereon.
2. A clip as claimed in claim 1 in which the arcuate shaped base portion is dimensioned and shaped to grip a fence wire of pre-determined-gauge therein.
3. A clip as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein each aperture is circular in shape and is adapted to be used with a dropper of circular cross section.
4. A fence dropper as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein a slot extends from the aperture in each arm to the edge of the arm which permits on twisting each arm the fence dropper to be inserted along the slot into the aperture.
5. A fence dropper substantially as herein described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 accompanying the provisional specification or Figure 3 of the accompanying drawing herein. JOSEPH GEORGE ALLEN By His Attorneys - 1 AUG 1984 6 RECEIVED
