Recesses (58, 59, 60) in the side hulls (95, 96) comprise fixed (88-90) and movable (51-56) seals. A gas pressure generating system for the recesses comprises a regulator (79) for controlling the pressure in the individual recesses (58, 59, 60). A further feature is the use of vertically oriented, ventilated steps (compartments) (49) in the sides of the side hulls (95, 96) to reduce wetland resistance during rough sea operation. Other features are the use of an air turbulence generator (39) on the underside of the interconnecting hull structure (79).
