Abstract

A process for treating colostrum is disclosed to produce treated milk with a lower bacterial content than colostrum. The milk is homogenized and within approx. 5 minutes after homogenization, it is subjected to dynamic microfiltration to produce a filtrate that has a lower bacterial content than the original colostrum. When the flow rate of milk through the microfilter falls below a predetermined level, the dynamic microfilter is taken out of the milk filtering operation, flushed with water and reinserted in the milk filtering operation and the steps are repeated if necessary until the membrane cannot recover a minimum filtering capacity of the membrane. for the membrane to essentially recover its original filtration capacity.
