Description
The invention relates to methods for removing artificial grass from a support floor.
It is known to use artificial grass for covering a sports field. Usually the grass is placed on a suitable substrate and remains there until it needs to be replaced.
Recently, it has been desirable to use artificial grass on a surface on which more than one sport can be played. For example it may be desirable to quickly convert from a pitch suitable for soccer to a pitch suitable for basketball. In this case, the artificial grass is laid over a wooden basketball floor for playing soccer and removed to reveal the wooden floor for playing basketball. In another case, it may be desirable to quickly change from a football field to a field suitable for "rodeo". In this case, the artificial turf is laid over a hard-trodden surface (dirt base) for football and removed for "rodeo".
Difficulties are encountered when it is desired to change from one sports field to another when applying or removing artificial grass. One of the main difficulties is that the grass is very heavy, large and bulky, so that it is difficult to place on or remove from the sports field.
US patent no. 4,399,954 shows a method for removing artificial grass from a sports field or placing an artificial grass on the sports field. This is achieved by supporting the artificial grass on an air cushion, which substantially reduces the forces required to pull the grass onto or off the pitch. An air cushion with an operating pressure in the range of around 25 - 130 Pa is mainly sufficient to support an extended surface of artificial grass which can have a base weight in the range of around 2.4 - 12.2 kg/m 2. One of the disadvantages of the system shown in this patent is that it must be used on a closed and covered sports field. It cannot be used outdoors, especially in some western states, for the reason that over a period of time impurities and dust from the air will be absorbed in and on the grass to a point where the grass cannot be moved. For example the dust may include dry loose soil which may have a specific gravity of at least 1.2, corresponding to a density of 1200 kg/m . If, as a result of a dust storm, certain parts of the extended surface are covered with artificial grass to a depth of 4.8 mm, the basis weight of the grass to be supported by the air cushion will increase substantially to about 5.8 kg/ cm 2. This will prevent the sections of the grass that are heavily loaded with impurities from being able to float on the pneumatic pad, which means that additional traction forces must be added to the artificial grass. Such increased traction can tear the artificial grass or cause other harmful effects.
A method of removing an artificial grass from a sports field is provided, where the grass is pulled away from the field along a path leading to a powered take-up roller, with a portion of the path between the sports field and the point on the take-up roller in such a configuration that the artificial grass is upside down in this part of the track. This allows impurities in the grass to fall out of the grass and into a collection area. Forces are preferably applied to the grass in this part of the pitch to remove the impurities from the grass. The forces can be applied in the form of air jets, carpet beaters or other carpet cleaning devices.
2 The invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the drawings, where fig. 1 is a schematic side view showing the path that the artificial grass follows in an embodiment of the method according to the invention, fig. 2
er et sideriss som viser konfigurasjonen av banen som kunstgresset følger når det tvinnes opp inn på en opptaksrull i en andre utførelsesform av oppfinnelsen. is a side view showing the configuration of the path that the artificial grass follows when it is wound onto a take-up roll in a second embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, an artificial grass 11 is shown which is removed from a floor 12 on a sports field. The grass 11, which is of a known material, is composed of a support layer 13 which supports a grass-like material 14 which extends upwards from the support layer 13. In many cases, the artificial grass is held firmly on an underlying shock-absorbing mat (not shown). Preferably, the grass 11 is supported above the floor 12 and an air cushion as described in US Patent No. 4,399,954 while it is being installed or removed from the floor 12.
I denne utførelsesform forlater gresset 11 gulvet 12, passerer over lederullen 21 og passerer The structure for carrying out the method in the present invention is mounted in a pit 16 sunk into the ground and enclosed by concrete walls 17 and a floor 18. The grass 11 passes over a conductor roll 21 attached to one of the walls of the pit and then over a second conductor roll 22 which is supported by guide rollers 23. The grass 11 passes over the roller 22 and then between the rollers 22 and 23. From the roller 22 the path for the grass 11 passes under a take-up roller which is supported by rollers 21, of which at least one is driven in a way described in US patent 4,399,954. In this way, a point on the grass 11 leaves the floor 12 and passes along a path that leads over the roller 22 and then under and around the take-up roller 26, this path therefore extending from the floor 12, around the roller 22 and then to and around the take-up roll 26 to a "wrapping point" 30. By "wrapping point" is meant the point on the outer winding of the take-up roll 26 where the grass moving from the roll 22 first touches or covers the outer winding of the roll 26. F Fig. 1 clearly shows that while the grass moves along the path described above, a part of the grass will come into such a position that the grass-like material 14 extends downwards from the support layer 13. From fig. 1, it can be easily seen that this part of the track extends from about the four o'clock position on the roller 22 to about the eight o'clock position on the roller 26. This position of the grass 11 allows collected impurities, dust, etc. to fall from the grass 11. If desired, a chute 33 and a belt conveyor 34 (or also a vacuum dust collection device) are used to transport away the impurities that have fallen from the grass 11. It is also preferred that the nozzles 37, placed at intervals across the width of the grass 11, ensure alignment of the air jets towards the grass-like material 14 to drive the impurities from there. Fig. 1 also shows that the grass 11, when it is in the position of the track where the grass-like material extends downwards from the support layer 13, comes "free from" the rest of the grass 11. By "free from" is meant that none of the rest of the grass is below the part of the grass that is upside down to catch or collect impurities that fall from the upside down part of the grass. Fig. 2 shows equipment for practicing a second embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment, the grass 11 leaves the floor 12, passes over the guide roller 21 and passes
En roterende ■so over and around the take-up roll 26. In this embodiment, the portion of the grass 11 path where the grass-like material extends downwards from the support layer 13 will extend from about the eight o'clock position on the take-up roll 26 to about the four o'clock position on the take-up roll 26. A rotating
Igjen foretrekkes det at det anvendes en renne 33 og en transportør 34 for å transportere bort urenhetene som er fjernet fra gresset 11. drum 46 placed under the roller 26 is provided with knocking wings 47 which come into contact with the grass 11 to remove the impurities therefrom. Again, it is preferred that a chute 33 and a conveyor 34 are used to transport away the impurities that have been removed from the grass 11.
When this is in operation, the grass 11 is pulled away from the floor 12 and transported along a path to and onto the take-up roller 26. The path is configured such that the grass-like material along a portion of the path extends downward from the support layer 13 of the grass 11 to allow that accumulated impurities fall from there. Preferably, forces are applied to the grass 11 at a point along the path where the grass-like material 14 extends downwards from the support layer 13 in order to expel from the grass all impurities that have collected therein. These forces can be supplied by air flows from the nozzles 37 or by knocking vanes 47 carried by the rotating drum 46.
