Description
The present invention relates to a method for determining and regulating the level of a metal melt in a mould, guide chute or the like by measuring eddy currents which are induced in the metal melt by means of a measuring coil and constitute a measure of the measuring coil's distance to the melting surface. The invention also applies to a device for carrying out this method. In order to be able to meet the current requirements for metal processing with regard to metal structure and surface properties, it is absolutely necessary during the casting process to have knowledge of the metal level in the casting mold with great accuracy. Especially when casting with an electromagnetic mould, the surface quality depends directly on the stability of the metal level in the mould.
From, for example, CH-PS 599,541, a device is known for sensing the surface level of molten metal in a string casting mold with a sensing means comprising a heat-sensitive magnetic body, the magnetic properties of which change depending on the temperature and which is arranged in a suitable place in the side wall of the mold. This device cannot, however, find any application when casting in an electromagnetic mould, as the sensing element is affected in an uncontrollable way by the electromagnetic mold itself. Furthermore, this device has proved far too inflexible, as it is always located in the same place in the mold and therefore makes a flexible implementation of the metal level measurement impossible.
US-PS 4,160,168 shows a device for controlling the surface of a metal bath, and where the metal level is deduced electro-optically. However, this measuring method is far too inaccurate, as it depends, among other things, on the height of the edge meniscus formed by the metal melt.
It is thus an object of the invention to develop a method and a device of the type indicated above, and which allows the measurement of the surface level of a metal melt in a simple way and yet with the highest accuracy. Here, particular emphasis is placed on flexible use of the device as a whole and achieving independence from existing temperature changes within the working area.
This is achieved by a method of the type stated above and during which eddy currents are induced in the surface of the metal melt, and their size is compared with an intended value, and the supply amount of metal melt is regulated in accordance with the difference between the compared sizes.
In this method, the surface level of the molten metal is derived at a distance from the side walls and on the free surface of the molten metal. The measurement is then free of random changes in meniscus formations at the edge of the surface, which are, however, included in all previously known methods for measuring metal levels using devices in the mold's side wall. Furthermore, carrying out the measurement on the free metal surface, particularly in the case of electromagnetic casting of aluminium, prevents a deterioration of the accuracy of the measurement by the fact that the measurement process is affected by magnetic currents emanating from the mold walls.
I driftsposisjon for-løper føringsrøret gjennom tverrbjelken. In a corresponding device for carrying out the method, the measuring coil in question is arranged above the metal melt and connected to an electronic unit, which supplies the measuring coil with the necessary alternating current to produce said eddy current, and also measures the size of the eddy currents, the electronic unit being connected to a regulation device for comparison of the measured current value of the eddy currents with an intended value, and which is arranged for controlling a unit to determine the flow rate of molten metal through an outlet pipe or the like. Here, the measuring coil is preferably located on a bottom plate of a guide tube which is stored in a sleeve on a cross beam above the metal melt, and is protected by a cap of heat-resistant material. This latter cap can, for example, consist of Teflon. As the electronic unit is also located inside said sleeve, it can be connected to the measuring coil in a simple way and with the help of an HF cable through the guide tube. The casing itself sits on the cross beam, as a further insulation layer is arranged between the casing and the cross beam. It consists, for example, of aluminum and is internally lined with insulating material. In the operating position, the guide pipe runs through the cross beam.
The guide tube to which the measuring coil is permanently connected should, according to a special feature of the invention, be adjustable in the height direction. This can be achieved in a simple way in that a pin which is accessible from the outside of the casing can be inserted into a bore in the guide tube, which exhibits several such bores along its longitudinal axis. In practice, it has been shown that the current measurement of the metal level should optimally take place at a distance of approx. 20 mm from the measuring head to the metal melt.
According to this, this value should be used as a reference value for the subsequent regulatory process. A corresponding calibration should preferably take place before the level gauge is placed on the cross beam and when measuring eddy currents induced in a stationary metal plate. If later lowering of the metal level should be required, this can be followed by the measuring coil' by lowering the guide tube. In this way, the level measuring device is highly adaptable to desired changes. It is of course also conceivable that the guide tube is fixedly arranged in the casing and that the casing can be raised and lowered together with the cross beam.
As very high temperatures prevail in the level meter's working area, according to the invention its interior or also the space around the measuring coil which is enclosed by the Teflon cap should be cooled by means of a cooling medium. For this purpose, primarily air comes into play.
Ved hjelp av denne plugg kan tverrsnittet i et gjennom- If the metal level changes, for example, during the casting process, impedance changes will occur in the measuring coil, as the induced eddy currents in the object to be measured manifest themselves as ohmic losses. The value of these impedance changes is transmitted through the electronic unit to a regulation device, where it is compared with the intended value stated above. On the basis of a difference between the current value and the intended value, this control device in turn controls the relevant unit for determining the flow rate of molten metal through an outlet pipe or the like. If there is a difference, a stepper motor is started, which in turn drives a threaded spindle which is connected via an arm with a plug or pin. With the help of this plug, the cross-section in a through-
løp i avløpsrøret forandres, således at metalltilførselen for-høyes eller avstrupes. run in the drain pipe is changed, so that the metal supply is increased or throttled.
The device as a whole is very insensitive to disturbances and works with high accuracy.

A cross beam 4 which spans the mold 3, carries a level gauge 5 with an intermediate connection of an insulating layer 40 and is pierced by the guide pipe 6 for a sensor 10 and the level gauge 5. The latter is connected via a line 7 to a regulation device 8, and this is in its trip over a further line 9. connected to a unit 11 for determining the flow rate for the metal melt S through an outlet pipe 2. A rod 14 is connected to a projecting arm 12 from the unit 11, which is arranged with its outermost tip to change the outlet cross-section for an opening 15 in the discharge pipe 2.
According to fig. 2, an inductive measuring coil 12 is fixedly arranged on the bottom plate 19 of the guide tube 6, the measuring coil or the formation of a bottom space R being covered by an insulating Teflon cap 21. Above, the guide tube 6 projects into a casing 23 for the level gauge 5, which for example consists of aluminum with an inner insulating liner 24, and is held in position in the housing by a setting pin 25 which is accessible from the outside. With the help of this pin, a desired distance for the sensor 10 from the surface of the molten metal S can be set, as the guide tube 6 for this purpose and along its longitudinal axis has not shown bores at certain mutual distances as pin holes for the pin 25.
A measuring coil 20 is over an HF cable 27 through the guide pipe 6, and which is indicated by dashed lines, connected to an electronic unit 28, the components of which are not shown in more detail. By means of this unit, the measuring coil 20 is supplied with alternating current of a higher frequency, which induces eddy currents in the molten metal S. The magnitude of the currents present in the measuring coil is dependent on the distance between the measuring coil 20 and the molten metal S, and thus constitutes a measure of this distance between the mutually inductively coupled elements. This means that a demodulated, linearized and amplified impedance change in the measuring coil 20 causes a voltage change that is directly proportional to changes in the distance between the melt and the measuring coil 20.
A signal produced in this way is carried over a dotted line 30 to a terminal strip 31, to which a line 7 is connected by means of a socket connection 41.
For cooling the entire system, a hose 32 is connected to a hose connection 33 for blowing in air or another cooling medium through a nozzle 34 in the interior 22 of the casing 23, from which the relevant air or the like can again escape through an air filter 35.
By means of a cross-sectional constriction in the nozzle 34, air is also supplied through a further, branching nozzle 36, a piece of hose 37, and a dashed flow channel 38 in the guide tube 6 as well as through the measuring coil 20 to the bottom space R, from which the air can again escape through borings 39.
The signal from the electronic unit 28 is transmitted through the line 7 to the regulation device 8 and is there converted into a control signal for the unit 11 to determine the flow rate for the metal melt S. In the unit 11, a stepper motor is then started for this purpose, which can move over a screw spindle the arm 12 with the rod 14 upwards and downwards for changing the cross-section of the passage opening 15 and possibly opening and closing it.
