Abstract
The present invention describes a device and a method for separating particles from a mixture of liquids and gas, where the separated particles have a diameter down to 2 µm. The device includes a container (20) with a hydrocyclone (16) and a backwashable filter (17). The hydrocyclone (16) and the backwashable filter (17) separate all particles down to 2 µm from the mixture and the particles are fed to the bottom of the container (20). The system includes various devices that help the process and several valves with control elements that control each cycle. In addition, a possible use of the invention is described for separating sand down to 2 µm from a mixture of oil, gas and produced water and cleaning separated sand before it is discharged into the external environment, e.g. sea. The separation process and the purification process can be carried out in two different ways and they are described with examples. This invention does not require replacement of material or anything similar and processes continuously.
Description
A separation process of particles from a liquid mixture of water, oil, particles and contained gas is described. In a cylindrical container (20) with a conical bottom, first the heavier particles are removed from the incoming mixture by centrifugal flow of the mixture by cyclone (16) and afterwards lighter particles are removed by filter (17).
The mixture of liquid and particles is supplied to the cyclone (16) located in the container (20). The cyclone (16) has a tangential inlet designed for sufficiently high velocity. Satisfactory speed causes the mixture to rotate and also forms a vortex around the vortex finder located axially at the cyclone (16). In that way, the heavier liquid will be directed to the walls of the cyclone (16). The separated lighter liquid with lighter particles can then enter through the top outlet of the cyclone (16) to the filter (17) for removal of remaining particles. The rest of the liquid flows down with heavier particles, through the bottom outlet of the cyclone (16). Gas follows lighter particles.
US 5827357 describes a separator and a method for separating components in pressurized drilling fluid return. The separator comprises a vertical cylindrical pressure vessel having elliptical top and bottom heads. A mechanical device, referred to as vortex tube clusters of vertical tubes, is mounted in the upper part of the container chamber, at a distance above the bottom head to define a lower chamber portion for liquid and solids separation. Pressurized drilling fluid return is directed tangentially into the vortex tubes and a subsequent centrifugal action is generated. Entrapped gas is separated and forms a gas vortex that extends outwards from the vortex tubes and the container top. The liquids and solids are led into the vessel's bottom chamber section where the solids settle to the bottom by gravity. The solids are extracted from the bottom of the vessel using a slurry pump. The oil and water components in the liquid layer are also separated by gravity and removed individually from the vessel.
The publications GB 2332632, EP 0024148 and CA 2542731 describe known solutions for the separation of multiphase well flow, where a cyclone is used in a vertical tank.
In a first aspect, the present invention relates to a device for separating particles from a liquid mixture, as defined in claim 1, and embodiments according to claims 2-7. In a second aspect, the present invention relates to a method for separating particles from a liquid mixture, as defined in claim 8, and embodiments according to claims 9-12.
Om filteret (17): About the filter (17):
The filter (17) has a conical bottom which helps particles to settle more easily down to the cyclone (16), especially during the backwashing process. The filter (17) may include a perforated or slotted metal tube with openings in the range of 5-100 μm, or it may include felt, textile, polymeric material. A membrane can also be used. The filter (17) is confined in a cylindrical chamber with a filtering area (inside) that is wider at the bottom. This is due to the filtration area is made as large as possible and it becomes easier to loosen particles. Electricity is used. motor (18) when backwashing. In this way, less clean liquid can be used for backwashing. In addition, a heat exchanger (14) can be used to help heat up the liquid for backwashing the filter. Heated clean liquid (15) helps to loosen particles that are on the filter (17) and they are self-adhesive. Use of the heat exchanger (14) is not necessary. This invention does not describe additional designs of automatic backwash filters. The invention proposes the use of filter design as part of the invention. Therefore, there is a need for checking on the optimal current design of the filter (17).
In the container (20) the introduced mixture is kept and it is constantly circulated with a pump. Clean water is supplied and the oil-water mixture is removed through the filter (17) and the stream (19).
The separation method is enhanced by added mixer (8) which causes liquid turbulence. The liquid turbulence cleans coated particles. Added gas (2) enhances flocculation. Separation methods can be further enhanced by the addition of additional chemicals (4) and solvents (3). Exhaust gas is led to a flare (22). The closed environment contains a pressurized gas atmosphere to assist the onward passage under pressure of secreted liquid to other parts of the facility.
The particles can be separated from e.g. a large amount of oil and water and then for environmental reasons they can be dumped at sea or transported to another cleaning site.
A hydrocarbon - well stream mainly contains hydrocarbons, particles and water. The contaminated particles will emit oil, gas and water during a separation process.
The invention will separate particles from that type of current and prevent unwanted emissions into the surrounding environment.
When excreting in a closed environment, unwanted emissions to the environment are avoided. Secreted gas can be sent to a flare or to an atmospheric vent. Application will benefit the separation of all particles over 5 μm in diameter from a mixture of particles, water and hydrocarbons (oil and gas). The size of the particles depends primarily on the design of the filter (17).
Advantages of the design are that gas (2) can be mixed with liquid mixture at the inlet and this will impose flocculation in the container (20) and increase turbulence flow at the mixer (8). Particles that are surrounded by oil are separated from the oil by turbulent flow through the mixer (8).
Separated particles go down into the cyclone (16) with the rest of the liquid mixture and are returned to the container (20).
The invention provides an advance in the separation of particles from a mixture of water, oil, particles and contained gas. The system has been particularly developed in connection with the need for cleaning sand and lighter particles that are separated from a hydrocarbon well stream, where the mixture is separated in a closed environment with a cyclone (16) and a filter (17). Heavier sand particles are held down in the cyclone (16) by utilizing centrifugal force and lighter particles are held firmly on the filter (17). The filter (17) only allows a mixture of oil, water and particles with a diameter below 5μm (or larger/smaller particles, it depends on the design of the filter (17)) to pass through.
The effect of hydrocyclone separators is well known for the separation of solids from a liquid. Therefore, the lower part of the separation process is designed as a hydrocyclone (16). Effective separation down to very small dimensions can be achieved. However, the separation efficiency is reduced when a hydrocyclone separator is used to separate solid particles with a specific gravity, e.g. under 2.5. In order to separate such solids from the liquid mixture, the filter (17) is also used with a filtration degree of, for example, 5 microns (depending on the design).
Oppfinnelse er beskrevet mer i detaljer på følgende tegninger: Invention is described in more detail in the following drawings:
Fig 1-5: Viser fungerende prinsipper med gjennom forskjellige sykluser. Hver figur representerer en syklus. Fig 1-5: Shows working principles with through different cycles. Each figure represents a cycle.
Fig 6: Viser hvordan beholderen (20) ser ut med tilpassende dyser. Fig 6: Shows how the container (20) looks with matching nozzles.
Fig. 1 shows the filling cycle. The container (20) is filled with a mixture of hydrocarbons, water and particles (5). In addition, chemical aids (e.g. de-oiler) (4) and solvent (3) can be used which can help the separation of particles from hydrocarbons. Before starting the refill cycle, the container must be emptied below a designed level (23). Gas (2), which is additionally supplied to aid flotation, is blended with the mixture through mixer (8). Gas is sent to vent (21) with no back pressure. The container is filled up to the start-up level (24). Filling volume is determined by the size of the container.
If we e.g. talking about the offshore oil and gas industry, then we can say that the flow (5) can represent produced water from the backwashing process of strainers or filters or produced water with sand and other particles from the prayer of main separators and degassing container. The flow (4) can represent e.g. de-oiler, stream (2) nitrogen or fuel gas and stream (21) can be routed to atmospheric vent. Gas that is seen in addition will maintain a closed environment with pressure in the container (20).
Fig. 2 shows filling of the container (20) with clean water or solvent (12). The pump (11) is run at a higher pressure than in the container (20). The stream (28) is driven to the ejector (10) such that the stream sucks the mixture from the container (20) as the stream (9). In this way, pure water/solvent is mixed with the mixture. Mixer (8) and ejector (10) affect high fluid turbulence which helps to separate oil and particles. This cycle is run from level (24) (filling up level) to level (25). The aim of this cycle is to start up the pump (11) with the supply of clean water (12).
The stream (12) can e.g. offshore is supplied from the downflow of degassers or from a dedicated container with clean water.
Fig 3 representerer hovedrensingsprosessen. Fig 3 represents the main cleaning process. Clean water (12) is pumped through the pump (11) and supplied to the container (20) through the flow (13) and the second part of clean water (28) is mixed with the suction flow (9) from the container (20). The mixed flow (7) is run through mixer (8). Ejector (10) and mixer (8) help separate particles from oil with turbulent flow. The mixture level in the container drops from level (25) to level (26). Water with oil and without particles is led to the second separation step through the stream (19). In other separation steps, oil should be separated from water. The current (19) has come from the container (20) and the quantity of the current can be controlled through level control in the container (20). The currents (1) and (22) are used to create a closed environment in the container (20).
2. Syklusen kjøres rundt en time. The cycle, which is represented in fig. 3, it is run immediately after the cycle shown in fig. 2. The cycle is run for around an hour.
In the oil and gas industry, the current (22) can be e.g. LP flare connection, the stream (1) fuel gas/nitrogen and the stream (12) can be taken from produced water degasser or from a dedicated container. The current (19) is supplied to the last separation step, e.g. to electric coalescer.
Afterwards, when the particles have been separated from the liquid, the filter (17) must be backwashed. For that, electricity is used. motor (18) and clean water (15). The current (15) is supplied from the pump (11) and heated through the heat exchanger (14). The heat exchanger (14) is set to help with the backwashing process and it is not necessary. Backwash process on the filter (17) should use a typical design with filters, el. engine and add clean water. In fig. 4 there is also the stream (21) which is completely open to the atmosphere.
The backwashing process should be very short (a few minutes) and the level rises from (26) to level (27). When the backwash cycle is finished, all particles above, for example, 5 μm are separated from the mixture. This is also shown in fig. 4. In an offshore perspective, it really means that there is no more oil (which is environmentally dangerous) in the mixture in the container (20).
Fig. 5 has an explanation of what the last cycle looks like. When all particles have been separated from the mixture and the mixture is without oil in the container (20), the container (20) should be emptied. First, the flow (21) has become available to atmosphere, i.e. 0 barg pressure in the container. It is done because safety possible backflow of the current (22). Purified mixture or water (12) is supplied with the pump (11) and distributed.
The flow (13) fluidizes sand in the container (20) and the rest sucks particles (9) from the container (20) through the ejector (10). Particles of purified water or mixture are sent out of the system through the stream (6).
The cycle is stopped when the glare level in the container (20) has reached level (23). All the cycles are finished.
On offshore platforms, the flow (6) can be represented as the flow that carries particles to sand bags or overboard. The flow (21) can be represented as atmospheric vent and it will prevent oxygen intrusion.
The system includes several valves with control means that control each cycle. They are not shown, but they have been intended as naturally part of the facility.
The invention described above should be used as a separation process where particles above a certain diameter are separated from a different mixture (e.g. hydrocarbons and water). It can be used on offshore platforms for the separation (or purification) of sand and other particles (e.g. clay) from the produced water stream.
Mulig bruk av oppfinnelsen på offshore plattformer: Possible use of the invention on offshore platforms:
Two filters can be installed in parallel downstream separators and upstream produced water degassers, i.e. between them. They can filter produced water, e.g. 500 m<3>/hr. The filter is a standard "wedge wire" filter with filtration "grade" e.g. 20 μm. When one of the two filters is clogged, a backwashing process is run on it, where all particles that are close to the "wedge wire" are washed off. Then the other is used for filtering. It takes around 15 minutes and 2.5% of the filtration flow to run a good enough backwash of filters, i.e. 500 m<3>/hr* 15 minutes* 2.5% = 3.15 m<3>total use of produced water for backwashing process.
The utilized produced water from the backwashing process is supplied to the invention and captured in the container (20). When the container is full and the necessary chemicals have been added, the separation process can begin. The invention should separate all particles over 20 μm in diameter from and oil in the mixture.
The pump (11) should run around 13 m<3>/hr of clean water (filtered produced water) and the container (20) should be around 1.4 m in diameter and 4 m in height. Around 26 m<3>/hr of fuel gas or nitrogen is needed.
Two filters can also be installed in the parallel downstream produced water degasser and they will be used for injected water filtration. Then they should be used with a lower degree of filtration, e.g.
5μm. Hele utskilling prosess burde ta rundt 1 time med 150# systemet design trykk. 5μm. It should be approximately the same process calculation. All figures are estimates and are dependent on the current design of backwash filters. The entire separation process should take around 1 hour with 150# system design pressure.
