Description
The present invention relates to an antenna structure which can operate at high frequency, consisting of piezoelectric ceramic columns grouped together in sub-assemblies which form independent sensors. The columns are embedded in a dielectric filling matrix which gives the antenna good mechanical strength and advantageous acoustic properties when it comes to decoupling. This antenna can particularly be used in high-frequency sonars of the mine sonar type.
In order to produce a sonar antenna which operates at high frequency, it is possible to use in a known manner parallelepipedal piezoelectric ceramics which form uniformly distributed columns on a plate. Figure 1 shows such an arrangement. It can be seen in this figure that there is a set of piezoelectric ceramic columns 10 mounted on a back plate 11. These columns can be grouped together in subassemblies, also called sensors. In such an arrangement, all the columns of the sensor are connected via their upper surface 12 and brought into contact via their rear surface with the plate 11. The front and rear surfaces of the columns are metallized. The contact can, for example, be produced by means of a metallization layer deposited on the surface 13 of the back plate 11 in contact with the columns 10. This results in an arrangement as illustrated in figure 2. The antenna produced in this way consists of a set of columns 10 evenly distributed over the back plate 11 and grouped together in sensors 20. The surface of the back plate 11 which is in contact with the columns has an alternation of elements 21 with metallized surfaces separated from each other by non-metallized bands 22. Each metallized surface is placed under a group of columns that form one and the same sensor , as the non-metallized bands electrically isolate the sensors from each other.
The combination of the different columns as sensors makes it possible to produce antennas capable of forming several transmission/reception channels.
In the case of high frequency acoustic transmission, typically between 100 kHz and several MHz, the columns forming the antenna are of small dimensions. The mechanical strength of the antenna consisting of the columns and the back plate is achieved in a known manner by filling the spaces between the columns with a rigid dielectric also called a matrix. In this way, a structure is obtained which is usually called a 1-3 composite.
The structure thus produced is completed with conforming layers and a sealing membrane which is placed on the upper surfaces 12. The front plate thus produced forms the surface of the antenna which is in contact with the propagation medium, for example the sea. The use of adaptation layers is particularly described in French patent application 94/08474 filed by the applicant and published 12.1.96 under no. 2 722 358.
The filler matrix used is usually based on polyurethane or an epoxy resin, these two materials having both advantages and disadvantages.
Det vil være kjent at koeffisienten O gitt ved uttrykket: Epoxy-based 1-3 composites have the advantage of having a high hydrostatic coefficient dh, which can for example be up to a few hundred picocoulombs per newton. Such a hydrostatic coefficient makes it possible in particular to achieve a high mechanical electrical conversion coefficient <t>. It will be known that the coefficient O given by the expression:
hvor Y er Youngs modul av materialet og S og I er overflate- og tykkelsesdimensjo-nene. where Y is Young's modulus of the material and S and I are the surface and thickness dimensions.
Epoxy-based 1-3 composites also have the advantage of expanding only slightly with changes in temperature and have good adhesion to the ceramics. This avoids having to use specific preparations intended to ensure that the matrix adheres to the columns.
However, epoxy-based 1-3 composites have mediocre acoustic decoupling properties and the use of epoxy matrices results in acoustic cross-talk between the sensors, which significantly reduces the quality of the formed channels.
In the case of polyurethane-based 1-3 composites, these have a good acoustic decoupling quality and therefore allow satisfactory decoupling of the formed channels. However, polyurethane has a lower hydrostatic coefficient than epoxy, in the order of a few tens of picocoulombs per newton, and therefore a lower coefficient O. Furthermore, the low strength of polyurethane and its temperature behavior mean that this material is not very well suited for the production of a antenna with sufficient strength and which exhibits good sensitivity to temperature variations.
From US 4 572 981 an antenna consisting of a set of piezoelectric ceramic blocks is known, where these blocks are grouped together to form independent sensors and the space between the blocks is filled with epoxy.
EP 1 227 525 describes an ultrasonic antenna formed from a piezo composite consisting of laminated composite blades. Each blade unit includes a resin layer and sintered piezoelectric wires in a uniform direction on the surface of the resin layer.
Andre piezoelektriske antenner finnes beskrevet i US 6 441 538, US 4 963 782, US 4 801 835 og EP 0 376 567. Other piezoelectric antennas are described in US 6,441,538, US 4,963,782, US 4,801,835 and EP 0,376,567.
The purpose of the device according to the invention is to obtain a sonar antenna which has satisfactory acoustic properties and good mechanical strength. For this purpose, it consists of a sonar antenna comprising piezoelectric ceramic columns grouped together in sensors and included in a matrix consisting of an epoxy resin. This matrix can also consist of any other material that has similar piezoelectric, mechanical and thermal properties. This antenna has the property of including insert strips, preferably made of polyurethane, which isolate the sensors from each other and therefore achieve good decoupling between the sensors. These strips can also be made of any other material capable of providing good acoustic isolation.
The antenna according to the invention has the advantage of having the characteristics of an antenna with an epoxy matrix while still having decoupling characteristics that a polyurethane matrix allows. It also has the advantage of being as easy to manufacture as a conventional antenna with an epoxy matrix.
The principle for the production of an antenna according to the invention is described in the rest of the document with the help of figures 3-5, which show: - figure 3: a perspective view showing an insert strip of the type used in the antenna according to the invention, - figure 4: a schematic sectional view of the antenna according to the invention at three stages in its manufacture, and - figure 5: corresponding to figure 2, shows a schematic appearance of the antenna according to the invention seen from the top.
In order to take advantage of the acoustic decoupling properties offered by polyurethane, the antenna according to the invention has insert strips. These strips, as shown in Figure 3, take the form of parallelepipedic strips 30 made of polyurethane. The thickness of the strips is determined to achieve the optimal decoupling at the frequency used, without damaging the characteristics associated with the epoxy matrix. For example, the strips can be produced by casting a thin sheet, from which the insert strips are then cut out.
The insert strips are incorporated into the structure of the antenna according to the invention during its manufacture. Figure 4 illustrates the three steps in the production of the antenna. Figure 4a illustrates the first step, which consists of pouring an epoxy resin into the spaces between the columns with a thickness of approximately 20% of the height of the columns. The resin layer 40 spreads beyond the surface of the back plate 11. Figure 4b illustrates the second step, which consists of isolating the sensors from each other by inserting the polyurethane strips 30 into the uncured epoxy resin. The strips can, for example, be inserted manually and positioned substantially facing the non-metallized bands 22 shown in Figure 2. Figure 4c illustrates the last production step. This step consists of pouring more epoxy resin into the spaces located between the spaces to form a resin layer 41 whose height is approximately equal to the height of the columns 10. The resin is then cured by known methods, including, for example, room temperature, crosslinking and hot post crosslinking operations followed by polishing and metallization operations.
An antenna according to the invention, where a schematic representation of this in the top view is given in Figure 5, is thus provided. This figure shows a structure comprising a back plate 11 and a set of piezoelectric ceramic columns 10, electrically grouped together in subassemblies defining sensors 21. The surface of the plate 11 in contact with the columns has alternating elements with metallized surfaces 21 separated from each other by non- metallized bands 22. The structure of the antenna also includes insert strips 30 which form divisions between the different groups of columns.
As can be seen in Figure 5, the structure of the antenna according to the invention has the advantage of not being difficult to produce, while still providing performance characteristics that are significantly better than a conventional structure, as illustrated by Figure 2.
To validate this type of structure, measurements were made by the seeker on an antenna that has an area of 132 mm<2> (6 mm x 22 mm) and a thickness of 5 mm, and with columns grouped together in five sensors. These measurements demonstrated that such an antenna according to the invention comprises polyurethane insert strips, 0.85 mm in thickness, exhibits inter-channel crosstalk reduced by approximately 15 dB compared to a conventional antenna, which specifically does not include insert strips. This antenna also has corresponding mechanical and piezoelectric properties.
