Description
OPPFINNELSENS OMRÅDE FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention generally applies to hydraulic couplings, and in particular to hydraulic couplings used in underwater drilling and production. More specifically, the invention relates to a pressure-balanced hydraulic coupling where radial passages are arranged to enable connection or disconnection without significant fluid pressure being exerted axially against the surface of a coupling part.
BESKRIVELSE AV BESLEKTET TEKNIKK DESCRIPTION OF RELATED ART
Subsea hydraulic couplings are previously known in the field. These couplings generally consist of a male and a female part with sealed fluid passages that form a connection between them. The female part generally consists of a cylindrical body with a longitudinal bore with a relatively large diameter at one end, and a longitudinal bore with a relatively small diameter at the other end. The narrow bore facilitates connection to hydraulic lines, while the large bore seals and slides into engagement with the male part of the coupling. The male part comprises a cylindrical part at one end and with an outer diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the large bore in the female part of the coupling. The male portion also includes a connection at its other end to facilitate connection to hydraulic lines. When the cylindrical part of the male part is introduced into the large bore in the female part, according to different embodiments of the device, fluid flow will be created between the male part and the female part.
Problems arise when using hydraulic couplings in equipment with relatively high pressure due to the high axial forces applied to both the male and female parts during the mating process and during use. In such couplings, it will be necessary to overcome the fluid force which opposes coupling between the male part and the female part before the fluid communication can be established between these parts. In equipment with relatively high pressure, the high forces acting on the valve parts could make connection between the connecting parts difficult. Also during use, the fluid pressure exerted between the male part and the female part will be such that it will tend to separate these parts from each other. The force required to join the parts and the resulting tendency of the coupling parts to separate from each other are characteristic problems of the prior art. High-pressure equipment and subsea applications have also experienced problems related to sealing of the joint between the male part and the female part.
Ideally, hydraulic couplings should be pressure-balanced as much as possible, so that the fluid pressure does not prevent connection or act to produce separation between the parts. The connecting parts often include valves that open automatically when connected and close automatically when disconnected. The connections should also be able to prevent the implosion of seals due to vacuum when the coupling parts are separated. In order to prevent loss of hydraulic fluid during connection or disconnection, seals that can withstand corrosive effects in underwater or other difficult environments should also be used.
In US Patent Nos. 4,694,859 and 5,762,106 to Robert E. Smith III, assigned to National Coupling Company Inc., subsea hydraulic couplings with radial metal seals are shown. These radial metal seals are retained on a shoulder on the female part. The seal is pressure applied for radial sealing relative to the circumference of the part and opposite the female part. In US Patent No. 4,754,780 to Robert E. Smith III, there is shown a pressure balanced hydraulic coupling with radial passages which form communication between the male part and the female part so that hydraulic fluid flow takes place mainly in the radial direction and does not exert pressure against coupling surfaces on either coupling part . In the pressure balanced hydraulic couplings of US Patent Nos. 4,832,080, 5,099,882, 5,203,374 and 5,277,225, subsea hydraulic couplings are shown with radial fluid communication passages for pressure balancing of the couplings. More specifically, US Patent No. 4,832,080 to Robert E. Smith III discloses a pressure-balanced hydraulic coupling with metal gaskets used to seal the annulus between the male and female portions when mated. The metallic gaskets can be pressure applied in response to fluid pressure in the couplings to increase the sealing effect. US Patent Nos. 4,900,071 and 5,052,439 to Robert E. Smith III disclose two-piece subsea hydraulic couplings comprising a cylindrical retaining sleeve slidably received within the female bore and a threaded retaining lock piece threaded to the wall of the central bore. An elastomeric seal is restrained from radial movement by a dovetail fit with a matching shoulder on the retaining sleeve and/or retaining lock piece. US Patent No. 5,099,882 to Robert E. Smith III discloses a pressure-balanced hydraulic coupling having radial passages in the male and female portions, a first pair of radial seals positioned on either side of the radial passages to form a seal between the receiver chamber and the seal holder, and a second pair of radial seals arranged on each side of the radial passages for sealing between the seal holder and the male part. These seals are preferably pressurized metal seals.
DE 10121294 A1 describes a pressure-balanced hydraulic coupling for use in subsea drilling and production operations. The hydraulic coupling has radial passages that connect male and female members together so that fluid pressure is not applied to either side of the members when they are connected or disconnected from each other. The female member has a split body with a first part and a second part each having a longitudinal passage and a radial fluid passage. A radial seal is located at the interface between the first and second portions of the body of the female member to enable removal and replacement of the radial seal when the female member is taken apart. The male member may be introduced through the first and second portions to the female member thereby providing fluid communication between the coupling members in a direction transverse to the bores of the coupling members.
In recent times, there has been a need for hydraulic equipment in which underwater hydraulic couplings form a part for use in applications where underwater pressures are higher. In deepwater applications, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are used almost exclusively to connect, disconnect and maneuver subsea hydraulic coupling assemblies. Typically twenty or more couplers are attached to a manifold plate that an ROV positions and connects to opposing couplers. In deep-water applications where ROVs are used, it is desirable to reduce the size and weight of the underwater hydraulic coupling parts. A reduction in coupling size and weight is desirable so that the ROV units can better position, connect and disconnect coupling parts and manifold plates on which the coupling parts are located. There is therefore a need for a lighter and more compact hydraulic underwater coupling that is pressure balanced for underwater use in deep water applications.
SAMMENFATNING AV OPPFINNELSEN SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an underwater hydraulic coupling of the above-mentioned type which comprises a male part and a female part to create fluid communication between them with radial fluid passages mutually arranged to enable connection or disconnection of the coupling parts without significant fluid pressure being exerted axially against the contact surfaces of the parts. These radial fluid passages are mutually positioned to prevent significant separation forces being exerted between the male part and the female part when the passages are pressurized with fluid. A gasket holder, which is inserted into the female part's receiving chamber, and locked in place by means of a locking piece in a holder, comprises a radial passage and a longitudinal passage for the flow of hydraulic fluid through them. The longitudinal passage in the holder is positioned to couple and establish fluid communication with a longitudinal flow passage in the female part's coupling body. This configuration of flow passages in the holder enables the diameter of the female connector body to be reduced, so that the size and weight of the female connector body is reduced.

BESKRIVELSE AV ANSKUELIGGJØRENDE UTFØRELSER DESCRIPTION OF VISIBLE EMBODIMENTS
Figures 1 and 2 show a first embodiment of the underwater hydraulic coupling according to the present invention. This coupling comprises a male part 10, a female part 20, a holder 30 and the holder's locking piece 40. The holder is inserted into the receiver chamber 39 in the female part and is held in place by the holder's locking piece 40. When the male part 10 is introduced through the holder and into the bore 38 in the female part, radial fluid passages will allow fluid communication between the male part and the female part. This fluid communication is created without significant pressure being exerted against the contact surface of the male part during or after application. The fluid communication between the male part and the female part is established through a radial passage in the male part, an L-shaped passage in the holder, as well as a longitudinal passage 52 and a radial passage 66 in the coupling body of the female part.
The male part 10 comprises a handle 31, a flange 42 and a probe 16. The handle on the male part can be threaded at 41 to a manifold plate. The male part and the female part are typically connected to opposite plates on a manifold and are held together by means of bolts or hydraulic bodies attached to these plates. The male part is usually attached to a certain plate 26, while the female part is connected to an opposing end plate 24 in order to thereby face the male part and be in line with it. The handle 80 on the female part may be threaded at 81 to the plate 24. The handle 80 may also be internally threaded at 76 to allow connection with hydraulic lines. Similarly, the handle 31 on the male part may be threaded at 21 to allow connection to hydraulic lines. The male part and the female part can be attached to the manifold plates using different fasteners, such as screws or threads. Techniques for attaching these parts to such manifold plates will be well known to those skilled in the art.
The probe 16 on the male part has a cylindrical bore 32 which is continuous. A poppet valve 25 can be included in the central bore in the male part. A valve trigger 65 is used to drive the male part's valve open after the valve trigger has made contact with the corresponding valve trigger 64 on the female part. The valve 25 is biased to the closed position by means of the valve spring 71 in the bore of the male piece. This valve spring is anchored to a spring collar 47 which is held in place in the bore by means of a clamp 46. The probe comprises a probe wall or outer circumference 45 which ends in a guide surface 28. In a preferred embodiment there is a shaped seal 23 consisting of an elastomeric ring or a metal ring engages with the outer circumference of a valve release 65. The gasket 23 is held in place against the guide surface of the male part by means of a nut 63 which is threaded on the probe section 16 against the guide surface of the male part.
When the valve on the male piece is in the closed position, transmission of hydraulic fluid through the male piece of the coupling will be blocked. Fluid can, however, be transferred through the male part by opening the valve, so that the radial passage 19 communicates with the inner bore 32 in the male part, as well as the outer circumference or probe wall 45 in the male part. Preferably, a pair of radial fluid passages 19 are arranged in position between the central bore 32 in the male piece and the cylindrical probe wall 45.
Skjønt utførelsen i fig. Although the embodiment in fig. 1 and 2 show that the valve releases extend from the top of the poppet valves, alternatively the valve releases can be disconnected from the poppet valve in each of the connecting parts. If the valve triggers are disconnected from the poppet valves, a flange on the trigger may be provided to limit the movement of the trigger. The female part of the coupling includes a central bore 77 with a poppet valve 55 slidably arranged in it between open and closed positions. When the poppet valve is closed, fluid communication between the bore 77 and a radial fluid passage 66 in the female part's coupling body will be blocked. The valve spring 61 drives the poppet valve 55 to the closed position. The valve spring is held in place by means of the spring collar 78 and the clamp 79. The valve release 64 extends from the top of the conical surface of the poppet valve 55 in the female part. Alternatively, as indicated above, the valve release may be detached from the poppet valve in the female portion. A shaped gasket 22 in the form of an elastomer ring or metal ring forms an engagement with the circumferential diameter of the valve trigger 64 to prevent fluid leakage around the trigger. The gasket 22 is held in place by means of an externally threaded nut 69.
To seal the joint between the male part and the female part, an annular gasket is placed in position on the female part's coupling body and held in place by the gasket holder 30. In a preferred embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, the gasket 44 is an elastomeric gasket with a dovetail fit between the female part and the holder 30. Alternatively, various other elastomer gaskets or metal gaskets, such as hollow pressure-applied metal gaskets, can be used to create a radial seal between the female part and the probe wall 45 on the male part. In addition, an annular gasket 43 is placed between the holder 30 and the holding-lock piece 40. The gasket 43 is, in a preferred embodiment, an elastomeric dovetail gasket with a dovetail-shaped fit between the holder and the holder's locking piece. The seal 43 may also be another soft gasket, such as an O-ring or a metal gasket, such as a hollow pressure-applied metal gasket. As shown in fig. 1 and 2, the seals 44 and 43 are positioned longitudinally on either side of a radial fluid passage 50 in the holder. The seals 44 and 43 prevent leakage of hydraulic fluid in the transition between the radial passage 19 in the male part and the radial passage 50 in the seal holder.
In a preferred embodiment, the circumference of the holder includes an annular space 12 which helps to facilitate the flow of hydraulic fluid when the male coupling piece is slightly mismatched in relation to the female part. The holder 30 comprises at least one L-shaped passage to facilitate fluid communication between the male and female parts of the coupling. Each L-shaped passage consists of a radial passage 50 for fluid communication with the radial passage 19 in the male part, as well as a longitudinal passage 51 for fluid communication with the longitudinal passage 52 in the female part. The radial passage 50 in the holder is interconnected with the longitudinal passage 51. When the holder is fully inserted into the large bore 39 in the female part, the longitudinal passage in the holder should be flush to allow fluid communication with the longitudinal passage 52 in the female coupling body. A pair of O-ring seals 58, 59 seal the transition between the longitudinal passages 51 and 52 in the respective the holder and the female part. Alternatively, the gaskets 58 and 59 can be metal gaskets.
In a preferred embodiment, the male part is introduced through the holder and into the female part's receiving chamber 38 before the valve triggers 64 and 65 come into contact to open the poppet valves. The male part is in sealing engagement with the radial seals 43 and 44 before the flow of hydraulic fluid between the coupling parts begins. In underwater hydraulic couplings, it is desirable to expel trapped seawater or other fluid from the cavity between the guide surface 28 of the male part and the female part's receiving chamber 38. One or more ventilation passages 34 are placed in the female part's coupling body to allow discharge of trapped seawater from the receiving chamber. Optionally, the O-ring 35 may be positioned around the outside of the female coupling body to allow trapped seawater to escape through the vent passage 34 and prevent hydraulic locking without further seawater entering the coupling through the vent passage.
Although in a preferred embodiment a pair of radial passages are shown in the male part, the holder and the female part, according to the invention it is thought that one or more radial passages can be used in each of these components of the coupling assembly. Fluid transfer between the coupling parts is facilitated by radial transfer of hydraulic fluid through the radial passages without this exerting significant pressure against the guide surface 28 on the male part or against the receiver chamber in the female part. It is also intended that the present invention can be used in a coupling with or without the valve in the male or female part of the coupling.
According to the present invention, a pressure-balanced underwater hydraulic coupling is created with several radial seals between the coupling's male part and female part, while the coupling has achieved reduced weight and outer diameter. This reduced scope and the reduced weight is due to the design of the holder 30 with one or more L-shaped fluid passages which are continuous and include one or more longitudinal, as well as one or more radial passages to facilitate hydraulic flow through the holder. The fluid passage in the holder establishes fluid communication between both the radial fluid passage 19 in the male part of the coupling and the longitudinal fluid passage 52 in the female part of the coupling. The L-shaped fluid passage in the holder instead of in the female part's coupling body enables a reduction of the female part's outer diameter.
