Abstract
A very accurate, fully equalized, high-resolution wave propagation system for measuring the dielectric constant and resistivity of fluids or solids in a cylindrical enclosure, as well as a method for measuring on-site drilling core properties or in a laboratory. An embodiment of the invention is based on waves propagated from transmitters (43, 49) above and below two separate receivers (45, 47) which transmit and receive electromagnetic waves via slots on the inner periphery of a cylinder structure. The data is then processed in a CPU, either downhole for later use, or on the surface for real-time monitoring.
Description
The present invention generally relates to tools for measurement during drilling and more specifically to tools for measuring resistivity and dielectric constant.
Drilling oil wells is a very expensive undertaking. The greater the certainty that a particular formation will be productive, the easier it will be for a drilling company to take on the financial risk associated with the drilling operation. The technology has reached the point where informative data can be acquired to determine the viability of a well. Two well-known methods for formation evaluation are downhole measurement during drilling (so-called MWD - Measuring White Drilling) and core samples. In the MWD method, downhole instrumentation measures certain parameters of the formation surrounding the drill stem. In the core test method, a special drill bit is used which makes it possible to take up a part of the formation for evaluation using surface measurement devices. In certain cases, the instrumentation for MWD is used at the same time as core samples are taken to measure the properties of the surrounding formation for later comparison with core sample data recorded at the surface.
A technique used to evaluate the formation surrounding a borehole in the earth is to measure the formation's resistivity and dielectric constant. Porous formations with high resistivity and dielectric constant generally indicate the presence of hydrocarbons, while porous formations with low resistivity and dielectric constant are often saturated with water and contain no hydrocarbons.
Slike innretninger er beskrevet i detalj i US 3,551,797 og US 4,968,940. The tool used to measure these formation properties during drilling typically uses a wave propagation tool to measure the phase delay and attenuation of electromagnetic waves propagating in formations over a predetermined space. Such devices are described in detail in US 3,551,797 and US 4,968,940. All conventional devices for use during drilling use antennas on the outside of a drill bit to transmit or receive signals. We are constantly working towards ever greater data accuracy that is more reliable.
The methods for evaluating the core samples, with regard to geophysical parameters of interest to the oil well drilling expert use, for example, the natural radioactivity in the core sample, the absorption of a known radiation from a known source located near the core sample and the liquid saturation value of the core sample (which is measured by induction).
Until now, this type of parameter has been measured and/or detected by first extracting a core sample and then arranging it mainly horizontally on the ground, then moving a cart equipped with the measuring instrument or instruments manually along the core sample.
Parameters of the above type can be affected by the core sample's surroundings during the measurement time, or corresponding parameters from the surroundings can be added to the corresponding parameters of the core sample during its measurement. When the core sample is arranged horizontally, where one of the sides is closer to the ground than the other, this difference in distance can therefore affect the result of the measurement or the ground can affect the instruments as a result of its proximity, this influence occurring to an increasing degree as the proximity is asymmetrical in relation to the core sample mass as a whole. In general, the lack of availability of the core sample makes it difficult to optimize the measurement.
US 4,996,489 describes a technique for measuring the complex dielectric constant of rock core samples in a laboratory.
US 6,003,620 relates to a method for downhole in-situ measurement of physical and chemical properties including fluid saturation of cores during core drilling.
The present invention combines the advantages associated with the core sample with the advantages of MWD to thereby provide an apparatus and method for determining the properties of a core sample while the sample is in its original environment with its original orientation relative to the surrounding formation.
The main features of the invention appear from the independent patent claims. Further features of the invention are indicated in the independent claims.
It is a general object of the present invention to provide an improved tool for measuring while drilling (MWD) and a method for acquiring highly accurate data with respect to parameters such as resistivity and dielectric constant of solids, liquids or a combination thereof , whether flowing or stationary during well drilling or in a laboratory.
This purpose can be achieved with an embodiment where the core sample measurement takes place on site, where a core sample is measured within the core sample cavity of a drill stem by arranging a receiving antenna, a number of transmitters and a number of receivers in a core string stem, so that the electromagnetic waves propagate through the core sample within the core test cavity instead of the formation around the drill stem.
This purpose can also be achieved in a laboratory environment by means of a cylindrical cavity containing the sample to be measured. The cylindrical cavity is provided with electromagnetic wave propagation instrumentation as indicated in connection with the above drilling system. Other features and benefits will be understood from the following detailed description.

The present invention is a highly accurate, fully compensated, highly spatially resolved wave propagation system for measuring the dielectric constant and resistivity of fluids or solids in a cylindrical enclosure. The system can be used to measure drill core properties on site or in a laboratory and can also be used to measure fluids, solids or combinations of these, either flowing or stationary, inside the cylindrical cavity. Systematic unknown variables affecting measurements have led to inaccuracies in other resistivity and dielectric constant measurement systems. An embodiment of the present invention is based on waves being propagated from transmitters which are separated symmetrically above and below two separate receivers which are in electromagnetic contact via slits on the inner periphery of a cylindrical structure.
The following shall be described with reference to fig. 1, which shows an overall simultaneous drilling and logging system incorporating an electromagnetic wave propagation measurement system for measuring resistivity and dielectric constant according to the present invention.
A well 1 is drilled into the earth under the control of surface equipment comprising a rotating drilling rig 3. According to a conventional arrangement, the rig 3 comprises a derrick 5, derrick floor 7, hoisting tool 9, hook 11, a kelly connection 15, a rotary drill 17, as well as a drill string 19 comprising drill pipe 21 which is attached to the lower end of the kelly connection 15 and the upper end of a batch of drill rings comprising an upper drill ring 23, an intermediate drill ring (not shown separately) and a lower drill ring forming a gauge pipe 25 immediately below the intermediate transition piece. A drill bit 26 is carried by the lower end of the measuring pipe 25. During well drilling operations, the drill bit is made up of a conventional bit when the main purpose is to reach a desired depth. This conventional drill bit is replaced by a core bit when the core samples are to be taken. The purpose of the drill bit is to acquire a sample of the borehole within the drill position. The drill sample is typically taken to the surface for testing and analysis to determine the properties of the formation at the depth from which the core sample was taken. The relationship between the present invention and current bore measurement systems and core measurement systems will be explained later in this description.
Drilling fluid, or mud as it is commonly called, is circulated from a mud pit 27 through a mud pump 29, through a pressure fluctuation regulator 31, through a mud supply line 33 and into the swivel 13. The drilling mud then flows down through the kelly connection 15, an axial, central bore in the drill string and through nozzles (not shown) in the lower surface of the drill bit. The drilling mud flows up through the annulus between the outer surface of the drill string and the inner surface of the borehole so that it can be circulated to the surface where it is returned to the mud pit through a mud return line 35. A vibrating screen (not shown) separates the cuttings from the drilling mud before the mud is returned to the mud pit.
The overall system of fig. 1 uses mud pulse telemetry techniques to transmit downhole data to the surface during drilling operations. A transducer 37 in the mud feed line 33 receives data at the surface. This transducer generates electrical signals in response to pressure variations in the drilling mud and the electrical signals are transmitted by a surface conductor 39 to an electronic data processing system 41 on the surface.
Mud pulse telemetry techniques provide data on a number of downhole conditions that are sensed by well logging transducers or measurement systems that are typically located on and within the drill bit closest to the drill bit. The mud pulses that form data are produced by equipment within the intermediate transition piece. Such equipment typically comprises a pressure pulse generator that is controlled by electronics within an instrument housing and allows drilling mud to escape through an opening that extends through the logging crown wall. Each time the pressure pulse generator causes drilling mud to be discharged, a negative pressure pulse is transmitted which is received by the surface transducer 37. An alternative conventional arrangement generates and transmits positive pressure pulses.
The circulating drilling mud provides a source of energy for a turbine-driven generator sub-assembly located in the intermediate overpass, where the turbine-driven generator sub-assembly generates electrical power for the pressure pulse generator and for various circuits comprising the forming part of the preferred embodiment of present invention. As an alternative or supplementary source of electrical power, batteries can be used, especially as a backup for the turbine-driven generator.
The previously known MWD systems generally measure the formation around the drill stem shown in fig. 2A. The measurements of the surrounding formation parameters are achieved by electromagnetic waves being transmitted alternately from the transmitters 43 and 49. The waves pass through the surrounding formation and are received by the receivers 45 and 47. This conventional measurement can be compared with the simplified diagram of the measurement system according to the present invention shown on fig. 2B. For an MWD embodiment, the present invention can be used downhole on a tool such as a drill string or a coiled pipe. Transmitters 51 and 57 pass electromagnetic fields through a core sample 50 and the fields are picked up by receivers 53 and 55. Such a symmetrical arrangement of transmitters above the receivers makes it possible to completely compensate for linear changes in the measurement system. US 5,811,973 in the name of Meyer, Jr., with the same applicant as the present invention, discloses a measurement system for propagation resistivity measurement during drilling and is used to determine the resistivity (or conductivity) of the associated formation fluid, the dielectric constant of the dry rock matrix and the water-filled porosity of the formation. One or more transmitter-receiver pairs are used, the transmitter component of the transmitter-receiver pairs operating at a number of frequencies. Measurements of the water-filled porosity can be combined with an independent measurement corresponding to the total fluid porosity of formations to obtain a measurement of the hydrocarbon saturation of the formation in fresh or salt-related water environments. The contents of US 5,811,973 are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety.
Fig. 3A shows in detail the data acquisition portion of the preferred embodiment of the present invention. A cylindrical enclosure 59, which may be a modified core cylinder, contains a liquid, solid, gas or combination sample 61, either flowing or stationary. The samples in the case of the MWD embodiment are a core sample. Transmitter T1 63 generates an electromagnetic wave which is passed through the sample 61 and is received by the receiver R1 65 and R2 67. The wave is transmitted and received via the antennas 64 and 66 respectively. In an alternative embodiment, the transmitter T2 69 generates an electromagnetic wave which is passed through the sample 61 and are received by the receivers R1 65 and R2 67. The waves from T1 and T2 are propagated and received via antenna 70 and 68 respectively. The transmitters are arranged within the cylindrical enclosure 59 around the inner surface. The number of openings 60 (only shown for T1) is provided for each of the transmission antennas.
Fig. 3B shows an enlarged aperture cross-section which is substantially similar to all the other apertures in the preferred embodiment. An electromagnetic shielding material 73, such as a soft ferrite, is positioned within each opening to shield the cylindrical enclosure from the electromagnetic radiation. Antenna leads 64 are fixed in the openings with an embedding material 71 which also provides protection for the antenna lead against the inner surface. In a preferred embodiment, the embedding material consists of an epoxy resin.
3A-3B. In an alternative embodiment of the invention (not shown), the transmitter antenna is arranged in a circumferential recess on the inside of the cylinder. This embodiment is structurally weaker than the slotted design in fig. 3A-3B.
Data received by the receivers can either be transferred in real time to the surface or alternatively recorded with recording instrumentation downhole (not shown) for later recovery. For the real-time data transmission embodiment, the signals are transmitted from the receivers to the surface using a transmission path, transmitted to a processor (CPU) for processing. The processed data includes measurements of the parameters of interest, such as an amplitude resistivity or a phase resistivity, as these are correlated with the depths from a drill bit depth indicator (not shown) as well as an output to a recorder that produces the interesting calculated parameters as a function of depth where the input measurements were taken done. An alternative embodiment comprises a processor unit (not shown) which is arranged within the drill ring 23 to carry out the data processing downhole. In order to make the best possible use of the memory capacity, it is often desirable to process the measured data downstream and store the processed results instead of the more space-consuming measured data.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the described embodiments and that a number of changes can be made to these embodiments without departing from the scope of the invention according to the patent claims. Other embodiments that are within the scope of the invention according to the patent claims will be obvious to a person skilled in the art after reading this description.
