Description
The present invention is a further development of the protection device for liquid level radar measurements described in the applicant's Norwegian patent 324464.
The invention relates to a device (which in this description is called a protection device, screen device or bucket) where a grid pattern plate is placed in the bottom part of the device. The purpose of this is to transform the input impedance to match the impedance of the LNG.
US 2004/0145510 deals with a bottom reflector for radar measurement of liquid level in a tank. The bottom reflector can be integrated with a deflector or an absorption body.
According to the invention, the bottom of the device comprises a damping material which provides at least two areas with different heights. The purpose of this is to provide a radar invisibility function.
Oppfinnelsen omfatter således en beskyttelsesanordning for The invention thus includes a protective device for
væskenivåradarmålinger, kjennetegnet ved de trekk som fremgår av de vedlagte patentkrav. liquid level radar measurements, characterized by the features that appear in the attached patent claims.
In one embodiment, the device comprises a layer of damping material which is arranged under the grating pattern. In one variant of this embodiment, the damping material layer comprises at least two areas which are located at different distances from the grating pattern (quarter wave step).
In one embodiment, the protection device comprises a wave shield which is in contact with the liquid, and in a variant of this embodiment, the wave shield is placed within the main lobe of the radar beam. This design is adapted for tanks where there are size restrictions, e.g. Samsung 1442 (130x230x180 mm internal measurements).
In another variant, the device is large in relation to the main lobe of the radar radiation. In that way, the interaction between the wave screen and the radar signal will be negligible.
In one embodiment, at least one boundary between the two areas is located at different distances from the grating pattern plate corresponding to the symmetry axis of the main lobe of the radar beam.
In one embodiment of the invention, the protective device comprises screws for attaching the plate to the damping material layer.
In one embodiment, the bottom part of the protective device is square or square.
Although the various features of the invention have been described as corresponding or belonging to different embodiments, it will be obvious to the person skilled in the art that these can be combined in any preferred way.
Oppfinnelsen vil nå illustreres ved hjelp av de vedlagte tegningene hvor: The invention will now be illustrated with the help of the attached drawings where:

In order to reduce the bottom reflection, a protective device as shown in fig. 1 developed. This description refers to results from tests with such a device in kerosene, because this liquid has a dielectric constant similar to that of LNG. Figure 1 shows a protection device 1 with a grid pattern 2. The grid pattern 2 has been designed to transform the input impedance to correspond to the impedance of LNG. The impedance of the plastic used is equal to the impedance of kerosene, which means that the plate is invisible both when immersed in LNG and in kerosene. On the other hand, in air the disc should be visible. The damping material 3 and the quarter-wave step 4 are provided to remove the influence of the reflection from the back of the plate material. The figure also shows that the protection device 1 comprises a wave shield 5 which is in connection with the liquid, and in the shown variant of this design, the wave shield 5 is located within the radar beam's main lobe 6. This design is adapted to tanks where there are size restrictions, e.g. Samsung 1442 (130x230x180 mm internal dimensions).
Figur 2 viser en beskyttelsesanordning med rektangulær bunndel 7. Figure 2 shows a protective device with a rectangular bottom part 7.
2. In one embodiment of the invention, four screws are used which press the grating pattern plate tightly down to the damping material 3. The screws are mounted symmetrically near each short wall. The first version before this change is shown in fig. 2.
Gamma = 2,12. Figur 5 viser en måling med 20 mm parafin over platen. Pulsen har gamma=2,08. Tyngdekraftsenteret sammenlignet med linjal vil gis nede. Figur 6 viser resultatet av tester utført med 60 mm parafin over platen. Gamma=2,15. Figur 7 viser resultatet av tester utført med 140 mm parafin over platen, gamma=2,07. The distance to the plate was in the main part of the experiment 147 mm (72 mm in the introduction tests). The holes in the walls and the leakage corners were taped with duct tape to prevent the leakage of kerosene. Figure 3 shows the echo signal at the start of an experimental measurement series with the air surface. Gamma = 1.98. You achieve an almost perfect pulse (gamma=2.00 equal to a perfect Hanning pulse) which is easy to detect (echo strength 45 dB). Note that the pulse at 0 distance comes from the entrance to the measuring tube and can be neglected. Figure 4 shows a corresponding measurement with metal in a bucket and air above. Gamma = 2.12. Figure 5 shows a measurement with 20 mm of paraffin above the plate. The pulse has gamma=2.08. The center of gravity compared to the ruler will be given below. Figure 6 shows the result of tests carried out with 60 mm of kerosene above the plate. Gamma=2.15. Figure 7 shows the result of tests carried out with 140 mm of kerosene above the plate, gamma=2.07.
The results shown above say that the bottom structure works as planned, without interference echoes, and that the focus can be moved to accuracy. To examine this section, the reference (ruler) reading was compared to the radar reading.
The deviation between the radar and the ruler can be seen in Figure 8. The standard deviation for this data set is 4.2 mm, which is within the required accuracy for this type of measurement of + 5 mm. The estimated accuracy of the ruler measurement (reference) is +/- 2 mm as indicated by the error bars.
Figure 9 shows the amplitude of the echo signal as a function of paraffin level, and the results in fig. 9 are consistent.
The measurements show that the square-shaped protective device as shown in Figure 2 does not produce any significant unwanted reflections.
The experiments also confirm that an accuracy better than + 5 mm down to a level of 10-15 mm above the plate can be achieved.
