Description
The present invention relates to a method for determining the mercury content in contaminated steel pipe sections and/or fittings where natural gas lines are concerned.
Two methods are known in the prior art, namely the so-called "Glorfeld" and "Kongevann" methods. The latter requires the development of a section of the steel pipe and transport of the sample to a corresponding chemistry laboratory, and the relatively complicated and labor-intensive quantitative mercury determination usually requires at least 24 hours.
According to the "Gl6rfeld" method, mercury is evaporated at a temperature between 500 and 600°C, the mercury compounds are reduced to metallic mercury and the mercury vapors are led to an absorption system by means of a carrier gas stream. After condensation, or absorption, on gold foil, the mercury is measured using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES).
When carrying out the "Kongevan" method, first the masses of the steel pipe to be examined are determined, after which the piece of pipe is clamped into a threaded pipe so that only the surfaces to be examined come into contact with the acids. The surfaces are then etched with a mixture of three parts concentrated hydrochloric acid and one part concentrated nitric acid. After an impact time of approx. After 20 minutes, the acid mixture is transferred to a measuring flask. After drying, the mass of the specimen is determined once more. With a diameter of the test piece of 20 mm, the mass loss must amount to at least 0.2 g 0.1 mm). If there is a suspicion that mercury has penetrated further, the treatment must be repeated, if necessary until the specimen is completely released.
Kvikksølv-innholdet bestemmes etter reduksjon ved flammeløs atomabsorbsjon. The mercury content is determined after reduction by flameless atomic absorption.
In addition to this, it is known from Rompp "Chemie Lexikon", 9th edition, 1992, p. 3737, to use atomic absorption spectroscopy for trace analysis of mercury.
Furthermore, a closed method for determining the mercury content in soil samples is known from DE-C1-195.06.875 where a constant air flow is set up and where the soil sample is heated to achieve a total vaporization of the mercury, after which the air stream with captured mercury is continuously sucked off and taken to a measuring device for determining the total released elemental mercury using atomic absorption spectroscopy in gas phase and then plotting this over a short period of time and integrally calculating mg/Hg-Gehalt per kg. soil test.
DE 42 12 885 Al describes a method for removing mercury from inner pipe surfaces, in particular dismantled gas pipelines, and a device which is suitable for this purpose. When transporting natural gas, the contained mercury contaminates the inner wall of the transport pipe. The mercury contamination is removed by heating the contaminated surfaces to largely evaporate the mercury by simultaneously passing a gas through. After the mercury vapors have been separated from the gas, this is fed back through the transport pipe.
The known methods are thus not only relatively time-consuming but also relatively expensive financially.
The task of the present invention is to improve the known technique, that is to say to improve the methods mentioned at the outset, so that the determination of the mercury content in steel pipes and fittings can be carried out in a simple and fast way and at the same time economically. The aim is therefore to provide a method for use in the field which enables a timely determination of the mercury content, whereby, among other things, the detection of achieving or falling below the limit values for mercury in steel (5 ppm Hg) required by the Norwegian Mining Service can be achieved.
Based on the assumption that mercury is, on average, in an approximately equal distribution on, respectively in, the first µm of the surface of the tube, it applies that at constant temperature, pressure and flow conditions, the evaporation of the mercury is essentially dependent on the surface and thus of the mercury concentration in the pipe section so that the task according to the invention is solved by the process steps specified in claim 1.
First, the pipe according to the invention is flushed with air until it is certain that a complete air exchange has taken place. Thereby, the air volume flow can be set to a predetermined, constant value, for example to 30 m<3>/h, whereby a flow rate of 0.25 m/sec results. with an inner pipe diameter of 205 mm. At this flow rate, the process requires approx. 3 minutes for a 50 m long piece of pipe. It should be clear that the expert can make similar adaptations for other size ratios. The flow speed can be changed within suitable limits, whereby it has, however, proved advantageous to keep it below 0.5 m/sec. and is also held constant.
After setting a constant defined air flow on the steel surface of the pipe and recording the surface temperature, the evaporating mercury can be measured by heating a defined pipe surface with a defined amount of energy. Between the evaporated mercury, both as the highest concentration (peak value/Peak) in mg/Hg per m<3 >air, and also as an integral total value in mg of evaporated mercury, and the Hg load for the contaminated pipe and/or fitting, there is a linear relationship. According to the heating of the invention, the air flow is sucked off and led to a suitable measuring device. Elemental mercury is determined here using atomic absorption spectroscopy in the gas phase. The measuring device is calibrated for this using sample gases for the relevant measuring range. The measurable value lies in the ug range and covers the required measurement range for the field measurement methods described here. The method of the invention lasts a maximum of 5 to 10 minutes in total.
Further advantages and characteristic features appear in the sub-claims.

As a measuring device, you can use, for example, "Mercury Vapor Monitor 791" from the company Products Manufacturing, Erm, Holland, which covers a measuring range of 0-1999 fig/m3.
As can be clearly seen from Figure 5, there is a linearity between the Hg values determined in the laboratory in the steel pipe and the Hg values determined in the field according to the invention and in air, so that the real Hg content in the steel pipe can be extrapolated with the help of the latter within the measurement range .
When comparing the residual contents of mercury in the specified test tubes with the amounts of Hg expelled by the spot heating of the steel tube, it is clear that in the investigated area there is a linear increase in the amounts of mercury that can be expelled with increasing Hg content in the steel. With the help of the diagram shown "maximum mercury concentration in flowing air in the Hg-laden pipes by spot heating" according to Figure 5, the invention has thereby enabled an arrangement of cleaned pipes calculated on the target value for the cleaning of less than 5 mgHg/kgSt .
