Abstract
Description
Foreliggende oppfinnelse angår en fremgangsmåte for miljøsanering av isolerglassruter. The present invention relates to a method for the environmental remediation of insulating glass panes.
Insulating glass panes consist of two or more layers of glass that are held apart by means of a spacer, usually an aluminum strip that lies between the panes along the edge, and where this spacer is glued to the panes and that the space between the panes is sealed using an adhesive and jointing material.
From approx. From 1965 to around 1975, PCB was used as a plasticizer in glue and sealant used in the production of insulating glass windows in Norway. In addition, PCB-containing insulating glass panes were probably imported until 1980. It is estimated that approx. 360 tonnes of PCBs were imported for this purpose.
PCB (polyklorerte bifenyler) er en syntetisk fremstilt klorforbindelse med blant annet følgende egenskaper: PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) is a synthetically produced chlorine compound with, among other things, the following properties:
god isolasjonsevne good insulating ability
stor kjemisk og termisk stabilitet great chemical and thermal stability
lite korrosjonsdannende slightly corrosive
gode smøreegenskaper good lubrication properties
lavt damptrykk low vapor pressure
liten brennbarhet low flammability
These are abilities which mean that PCBs were used in a number of different devices in industry such as power capacitors, building products, electronics, cold storage furniture (e.g. refrigerators), lighting fixtures, etc.
PCBs break down slowly and have major harmful effects on nature. PCBs are fat-soluble and are concentrated in the food chain. PCBs cause health-related changes in humans and animals. It weakens the immune system, increases the number of abortions and stillbirths, is a hormone mimic, lowers the population of several animal species, etc.
PCBs were banned in regulations from the Ministry of the Environment of 16 November 1979 and the ban came into force from 1980 and waste containing PCBs was to be treated as special waste from that point on. From the same time, there was an order that all waste containing PCBs should be delivered to the special waste system. There are currently no ways to effectively remediate PCB-containing insulating glass panes.
It is assumed that there are currently around 200 tonnes of pure PCB in insulating glass panes in Norway. The aim is to have this environmentally remedied so that it does not end up in ordinary "fillings". It is estimated that an average phase-out time is approx. 25-30 years for insulating glass panes. Given that the production peak was in 1974-75, the largest quantities of PCB-containing insulating glass panes will end up in landfill these days. This can amount to as much as up to 40 tonnes of pure PCB in the peak year for phasing out.
In the meantime, insulating glass panes must be collected and stored until good practices and installation methods have been found and established for the remediation of PCB-containing insulating glass panes as well as production lines for carrying out the entire process. It is urgent to find good solutions for the environmental remediation of PCB-containing insulating glass panes.
The PCB-containing material is concentrated in a narrow border along the edge of the insulating glass pane together with an aluminum strip.
Used glass is a valuable resource. Although after approx. 1980 stopped using environmentally hazardous PCB-containing glues for the production of insulating glass, the glue or sealant is an obstacle to the re-bending of the glass. It would therefore also be desirable to develop a method where used panes of glass could be recycled in a cost-effective manner by removing unwanted material on the edge of the glass effectively and affordably.
Due to the costs of collection and treatment, it is not currently appropriate to recycle the glass in insulating glass panes for reuse of the glass. If PCB-containing material has been used for gluing and sealing the insulating glass pane, it will however be necessary to separate the flat glass from this environmentally harmful material in order to deal with this effectively.
A method that is used today to separate glass and PCB-containing material is to cut the alurninium strip with the glue from the pane of glass with a sharp knife. This is a labour-intensive process where you cannot remove all the PCB-containing glue from the glass. In order to remove all PCB-containing material, the outer edge of the glass must therefore be cut away using a glass cutter, which both results in an increase in the amount of waste and requires considerable manual work.
The aim of the present invention is to find a method for dividing insulating glass panes into different fractions of unwanted material, such as glue and spacers, and flat glass from insulating glass panes into different fractions, so that the individual fractions can be deposited, destroyed or reused and where the method does not cause problems for working environment, or external environment on construction sites, waste reception etc
This goal is achieved by a method for the environmental remediation of insulating glass panes consisting of two or more panes of glass which are held at a given distance from each other by a spacer and which are glued and/grouted with an unwanted material, such as materials harmful to the environment or health, which for example PCB-containing materials, where the flat glass is separated from the unwanted material so that the flat glass can be sent for reuse or recycling and the unwanted material can be sent for safe disposal, recycling or destruction, where the flat glass is separated from the unwanted material by separating the edge zone of the insulating glass pane from the plane glass by water cutting across the glass surface at a given distance to the edge of the glass.
According to another aspect of the present invention, a device for the environmental sanitation of insulating glass panes is provided comprising two or more panes of glass which are held at a given distance from each other by a spacer and which are glued and/grouted with an unwanted material, where the device comprises a water and a transport system to bring the panes of insulating glass into the water cutter.
According to a preferred embodiment, the water cutter is arranged to cut the glass mainly across the glass surface at a given distance from the edge of the insulating glass pane.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, an application of water cutters is provided to separate a strip comprising glass and material that must be handled as special waste, from insulating glass panes consisting of two or more flat glass so that the flat glass can be reused or recycled and that the material which must be handled as special waste, can be sent for landfill, material recovery or destruction. The insulating glass panes are first released from the frame and frame. If the wood material is contaminated with material harmful to health or the environment, this must be deposited in a landfill approved for this purpose or incinerated in a facility approved for the incineration of such material. This release from frame and frame is often done at the place from which the glass is removed, so that this has nothing directly to do with the present method.
The insulating glass panes which have been freed from the frame and frame are then brought into a facility for carrying out the present method.
According to a first method, the insulating glass panes are brought into the plant lying on a conveyor belt up to a water cutting machine of a known type. The water cutter is then set to cut across the glass just inside the spacer or aluminum strip. When all the side edges of the insulating glass pane have been cut, the wasted edge containing the glass, the aluminum strip and the unwanted material is removed. The water cutter provides a straight and even cut, so that the flat glass, which is now clean of unwanted material, can be reused directly for the production of new panes. The wasted material is taken out for possible reuse or recycling of material, disposal or destruction as required by laws and regulations for the type of material in question.
Broken panes can also be treated with this method. If the pane is severely deformed, however, there will be more glass that must be taken care of together with the aluminum strip and the glue. Processing broken panes will usually also require more manual effort than processing whole panes.
According to the second preferred method, the pane of glass is preferably transported into the facility standing upright. Inside the facility, a water-cutting nozzle is then directed at the side edge of the glass pane between the glass and the aluminum strip so that the aluminum strip with glue is cut free from the pane. Optionally, two nozzles can be used next to each other so that both sides of the aluminum strip are cut at the same time.
After the aluminum strip has been detached from the panes of glass along one side edge, the pane of glass must be turned over for cutting along the next side edge until the aluminum strip has been detached from the panes of glass along all the side edges. The aluminum strip and glue are then taken out for disposal/incineration. If there are residues of glue on the glasses, an extra step must be taken to wash the edge zone of the glasses. During this washing, it may be necessary to brush the glasses to remove all glue effectively.
The water used for water cutting will contain residues of glue, aluminum and glass. In order to prevent the release of harmful substances into nature, it will be necessary to recycle the cutting water. The facility must therefore also include a purification system for the water.
If the glue contains substances harmful to health or the environment that can escape into the air during the water cutting, the plant will have to be a closed system that prevents the release of these substances into nature.
