Description
Oppfinnelsens område Field of the invention
Foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører boring i undergrunnen. The present invention relates to drilling in the underground.
Teknisk bakgrunn Technical background
Today, all oil and gas drilling takes place with the help of PDC (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact) cores that cut and roller drill cores that crush. PDC bits are used in the softest type of rock, roller drill bits in the hardest.
Drilling takes place by rotating the crown while at the same time pressing the crown with a certain pressure against the bottom of the hole. If the pressure is too high, the cutters on PDC bits tear off or the bearings break on roller drill bits. In any case, the crowns have a short lifespan, and parts (often hard parts that have to be fished out) are left in the hole. If the weight of the crown is too small, the drilling becomes ineffective.
To judge whether you have the right weight on the bit when drilling, you have a weight cell that measures how much weight you have in the lifting block that holds the drill pipe with bit.
Before reaching the bottom, the drill string is allowed to rotate and the weight is read. When the drill bit reaches the bottom, the weight is relieved and one can in theory see which relief corresponds to the weight of the drill bit. The only problem is that when drilling at 4000m, the weight of the string is 100 tonnes and the pressure on the crown must be 5 tonnes + 1 tonne. The pointer on the weight cell vibrates more than + 1 tonne, so the weight can be from 0-10 tonnes because the regulation takes place with more or less feeding of string which is done according to the driller's experience. Add the additional difficulties when drilling from a vessel that moves up and down in the waves. This is to be counteracted by the HIV compensators, but the uncertainty in the weight/pressure on the crown becomes greater.
In drilling for gas and oil, water (usually with added clay (mud)) is circulated down the drill string and up into the hole between the drill string and the rock wall. This circulation of water (sludge) has many reasons that can be described: 1. Primarily to lift cuttings (drilled rock) to the surface.
2. For å kjøle ned borekronen. 2. To cool down the drill bit.
3. For å motvirke at hullet kollapser. 3. To prevent the hole from collapsing.
4. By adding a lot of clay, the specific gravity can be increased up to 2.2. Sudden pressure increases when oil is found, gas is suffocated by the heavy liquid and prevents blow-out. 5. If the string is stationary as with coiled tubing, a motor can be driven around which in turn drives the drill bit around. 6. In soft rock, you can flush through nozzles to achieve that the drilling goes at double speed.
To get the circulation going, you have slurry pumps with pistons that often have a maximum pressure of up to 500 bar.
Recently, a hammer has been developed that is powered by pressurized water instead of compressed air. Originally, it was intended to replace pneumatic hammers to avoid dust problems in the mine corridors when drilling holes (4 W) for charging with explosives. We have adopted it to drill deep holes for oil/gas and geothermal wells because it is 10 times more efficient in hard rocks such as basalt and granite than roller drill bits, and the bits last 10 times as long.
For a hammer to work, it must be turned slowly around approx. 30-60 revolutions per minute for a 4 W crown and correspondingly slowly for larger crowns. The hammer can be turned in two ways; either by turning the drill string, or using stationary string and a motor downhole that turns the hammer.
Another requirement for the hammer to drill effectively is that it is driven towards the bottom with a pressure of 1 tonne + 500kg (4
It goes without saying that with regulation by weight this is almost impossible to achieve.
Forsøk viser at inndriften bare blir 5m/time og kronene går fort i stykker. Experiments show that the drive-in is only 5m/hour and the crowns quickly break. This is probably due to a phenomenon called "slip-sticking"; when the pressure against the bottom is great, the crown does not rotate, but only the string elastically. At 4000 m, the string rotates around many times while the crown is stationary. When the string is sufficiently spun up, it becomes shorter and lighter from the bottom. The elastic energy collected in the string causes the crown to rotate quickly without striking because it is raised slightly above the bottom. In the last part of the cycle, the bit is heading down towards the bottom with normal rotation and for a short moment before the load becomes too great, the bit drills a few centimetres.
It seems that this instability problem can only be solved in one way; with full control over the weight of the drill bit continuously.
Kjent teknikk Known technique
From the past, methods have been known for drilling where the condition of the downhole is measured with sensors placed at the drill bit. The result is sent up to the surface with mud pulse telemetry. This is a very slow transfer method. In order to get a faster indication of what is happening down the borehole, a method is known from US patent 5,654,503 where a correlation is first determined between conditions down the hole and parameters measured on the surface. Measurements on the surface can then be used to estimate a condition down in the hole.
Sammenfatning av oppfinnelsen Summary of the Invention
The purpose of the invention is to achieve a device and a method for drilling holes in the subsoil which avoids the above-mentioned disadvantages. More specifically, the invention relates to a device and a method for drilling which allows uniform and high cutting, and which provides a longer life for the drill bits.
Another aspect of the invention is that feedback is obtained more quickly about the conditions under which the crown/hammer works, and that these messages are more accurate and unambiguous than what can be achieved in previously known systems. This means that the drilling can take place under safer conditions, as faults can be detected more quickly, further that one is not so dependent on the experience of the drilling personnel for empirical management of the drilling process, and that the drilling process can be more easily automated. At the same time, the device and method according to the invention are more cost-effective than known alternative solutions.
This is achieved with a device and a method for optimized drilling, as is evident from the subsequent patent claims.
Kortfattet beskrivelse av tegningen Brief description of the drawing
The present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows an arrangement for drilling holes in the subsoil, and which uses the invention.
Detaljert beskrivelse av oppfinnelsen Detailed description of the invention
In the following example, an embodiment of the invention will be described where a drilling rig is used for drilling with coiled tubing and a drill hammer, as well as a motor down in the drill hole which turns the drill hammer. However, the invention can also be used in other, more conventional arrangements for drilling in the underground. For example, a normal split drill string can be used. The turning motor down in the borehole can also be omitted and the drill string itself rotated, etc.
Røret går over en gåsenakke 3 for å unngå for skarpe bend. The figure shows a drilling rig for drilling with coiled tubing. The rig comprises a coil 1 with pipe 2 which is fed to a tower with an injector system. The pipe goes over a gooseneck 3 to avoid too sharp bends. The coiled pipe 2 is then straightened in a pipe straightener 4 before it is fed down into the borehole 6 by an injector 5. The injector 5 is carried up by an injector frame 7. The injector 5 usually consists of a system of belts that grip around the pipe 2 and can apply force (in this case lift) on the pipe. At the lower end of the drill pipe 2 there is a drilling unit 8. The rig also includes a hydraulic system, including a pump (not shown) which pumps drilling fluid through the coiled pipe and down to the drilling unit 8. As mentioned above, the drilling fluid has many tasks, i.a. to bring up cuttings from the borehole. The drilling fluid will return to the surface through the annulus between the drill string and the borehole wall, possibly be collected, cleaned in a mud screen and again go to the pump. Several types of drilling fluid can be used and with different compositions, selected based on the current need.
Slike opplegg, så vel som mer konvensjonelle metoder for boring av borehull er beskrevet i Dreesen, D. S. & Cohen, J. H.: "Investigation of the feasibility of de-ep microborehole drilling", foredrag presentert på 8th An-nual ASME/API Energy Week 97 Int. conf. Houston, USA, 28.-30. januar 1997 International. The drilling unit 8 comprises a drill hammer driven by the flow of liquid down the hole. Such schemes, as well as more conventional methods of drilling boreholes are described in Dreesen, D. S. & Cohen, J. H.: "Investigation of the feasibility of de-ep microborehole drilling", lecture presented at 8th An-nual ASME/API Energy Week 97 Int. conf. Houston, USA, 28-30 January 1997 International.
As previously mentioned, it is of great importance to determine the force that presses the drilling device against the bottom of the borehole. Several different methods are known for measuring this force. One method is to place a load cell between the injector and the injector frame. As discussed above, this gives a very unreliable result. Alternatively, a sensor can be placed below the drilling device, which measures the force exerted by the string on the drilling device. The signal from the sensor must then be sent up to the surface, for example via mud pulse telemetry, or via a cable in the string. Sludge pulse telemetry provides a very slow transfer of data due to narrow bandwidth in the transmission channel. Cable transmission is of course very fast, but entails a lot of loot. The drilling crew is generally very unenthusiastic about having a cable lying inside the string. Dreesen & Cohen, 1997, shows the use of cable for transmission to the surface, however it seems to be about other signals in connection with directional drilling.
The present invention is based on the recognition that the contact force of the bit against the bottom of the drill hole can be regulated much better by measuring the pressure of the liquid that is fed into the drill string.
The drill string exhibits a relatively constant back pressure, approx. 100 bar, at the given amount needed to drive the hammer. If a composite drill string is used, the back pressure will vary to a greater extent with the length of the drill string. The resistance from backflow up the annulus can be approx. 10 bars. Values for this so-called friction loss can be found by measuring the pressure drop across the system while the drill bit is just above the bottom, i.e. before it makes contact with the rock.
If we use a stationary string and drill motor, the drill motor also has 10 bar resistance when it rotates without the bit being on the bottom.
The hammer also has a certain internal resistance, approx. 10 bar, when the water flows through and the hammer does not strike because the crown is above the bottom.
Det totale trykktapet blir 100 + 3x10 bar = 130 bar. The total pressure loss is 100 + 3x10 bar = 130 bar.
Samtidig øker motstanden mot væskestrømmen, dvs. at trykktapet over verktøyet øker. When the hammer reaches the bottom, the crown is pressed in and the hammer begins to strike. At the same time, the resistance to the fluid flow increases, i.e. the pressure loss across the tool increases. Ideally, the hammer should have a resistance of 180 bar. This value will of course depend on the make and type of the hammer drill. At the same time as the hammer strikes, the rotational resistance increases somewhat, so that the resistance in the turning motor increases from 10-25 bar.
If more force is applied to the tool, the pressure build-up over the tool will increase, until it stalls. There is also a safety valve in the tool, set at 350 bar. However, the hammer works optimally when it is pressed against the rock with as much force as possible, i.e. just before drilling stops.
Ideal pressure for a rotating string is then 130 bar + 170 bar is 300 bar and for a stationary string with a motor 130 + 15 + 170 bar = 315 bar.
We get a pressure curve for the system with a relatively marked effect when the crown hits the bottom. The large relative difference makes it easy to determine when the krone has an optimal thrust. The injector can then be set to feed the drill string at varying speeds according to the drillability of the rock layers so that the pressure is kept at 300 bar or possibly 315 bar. This system has proven to be so easy to automate that the drilling rig runs for hours with a drill sink of 25-30 m/hour in rocks such as granite without anyone being near the levers.
In Figure 1, a sensor is indicated at the coil 1. The meter result can be read on the indicator 9.
A major advantage of this system is that a change in the drilling conditions will immediately show up in the pressure measurements, i.e. that the feedback to the drilling crew is practically instantaneous.
Automation of the drilling process can, for example, be achieved by connecting a sensor that measures the pressure in the injected liquid, placed on the surface, for example just after the pump, to a servo circuit that regulates the feeding of drill string. The servo circuit is then set to regulate the feed rate so that the pressure in the liquid supply is kept at the optimum level. As the term feeding is used in this application, it also means movement out of the well, i.e. that the injector can reverse the movement if the pressure resistance above the drilling system becomes too great, which indicates that the drill bit is pressed against the bottom of the borehole with too much force.
The device for automating the drilling process can also include circuits that warn if abnormal conditions occur, in that the pressure exceeds an extreme value in one direction or another. The device can also be arranged to end drilling automatically if such a situation occurs.
You do not get any pressure increase with a PDC bit or roller drill bit by pressing this against the bottom of the hole with greater force.
