Description
The present invention relates to a device for a container that encloses a flammable/explosive/pyrogenic material, such as gunpowder, gas, fuel, etc., where the container is structurally made up of a container wall consisting of a non-metallic, plastic material, such as composite material.
The device according to the invention has been specially developed for military purposes in connection with rocket-accelerated missiles, but it has been shown that it can also be used for various civilian purposes.
The background for the invention is that containers which enclose a combustible material and which are either periodically or all the time exposed to the external environment, can under certain circumstances be exposed to phenomena that give rise to the ignition of the combustible material they contain. Examples of such natural and artificial phenomena are lightning, electrostatic discharges and electromagnetic radiation.
The purpose of the invention is to protect the medium inside the containers by preventing the penetration of lightning, high-frequency radiation or electrostatic discharge. This is to prevent explosion or burning of the gas/fuel which, due to sufficient energy/heat from said radiation/lightning/discharge, will be locally heated to the ignition temperature of the various media. If this happens, ignition and even explosion/fire can occur.
Examples of containers of this type are the outer shell of rocket engines. Rocket engines that propel or accelerate missiles are, for example, carried under the wings of aircraft in emergency situations and are clearly exposed to lightning strikes and electrostatic charges due to the friction against air during flight. Rocket-powered surface-to-air weapons are also sometimes exposed to lightning strikes in addition to electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic radiation is particularly present on board seagoing warships with a lot of electronic equipment such as radars and communication equipment. Stationary ground equipment and land vehicles, such as tanks carrying rocket-propelled missiles, are also exposed to the aforementioned phenomena. This also applies to storage fuzes and launch tubes when they contain a missile. Some of the situations have little probability of ignition actually occurring, but as long as there is a potential danger, safety measures will be implemented.
Examples of containers of this type for civil purposes are propane containers, gas bottles, fuel tanks and the like. Especially when these types of containers are placed outdoors, they represent a potential safety risk.
It should be specified that the invention finds application for non-metallic, wound and molded containers of composite structures made up of carbon fiber, aramid fiber, glass fiber or combinations of these in a matrix of resins such as, for example, epoxy or polyester. The composite structures have relatively poor conductivity and, for example, a lightning strike could penetrate the container wall and cause local heating to the ignition temperature of the medium inside the container wall. It is therefore sought to provide a conductive composite structure that will act in the same way as a Faraday cage. Electrically conductive metal containers themselves form a Faraday cage and are not part of the invention.
This is, in accordance with the present invention, provided with a device of the kind mentioned at the outset, which is characterized by the fact that plastic material in the container wall is externally coated with a layer of metallic, conductive material, with the intention of creating a Faraday's cage around the combustible material .
Advantageously, the outer layer of the container wall can be a coating of a metal selected from aluminium, copper, nickel, silver, gold, etc.
One way to apply the metal layer, or the metal coating, is for it to be applied through an IVD (ion vapor deposit) treatment.
Another way of applying the metal coating is that application takes place by vaporizing the metal under a near vacuum where oxygen is practically not present.
Typical thicknesses of the metal coating that is applied will be layer thicknesses in the range of 1 µm - 50 µm.
A very current application of the invention is that the metal coating is applied to a container which forms the outer wall of a rocket engine.
Another application is that the metal coating is applied to a container that forms the outer wall of a transport and storage container that accommodates a missile.
Another application is that the metal coating is applied to a container that forms the outer wall of a launch tube (launcher) for a missile.
In a civilian application, the metal coating can be applied to a container which forms the outer wall of a gas or fuel container. Here, one particularly has in mind containers that hold propane, methane or other natural gases, for example for camping, grilling, heating, lighting, etc. The fuel can also be liquid, for example petrol, or be in solid form as a pyrotechnic propellant charge. Civilian rockets are used, among other things, for the deployment of satellites in space.
Other and further purposes, distinctive features and advantages will be apparent from the following description of a currently preferred embodiment of the invention, which is given for description purposes, without thereby being limiting, and given in connection with the attached drawings, where:

The description refers to a rocket engine in a missile, but the invention is not limited to a rocket engine alone. Any container of composite material that contains a combustible material can use the invention.
Reference is first made to fig.l which schematically illustrates a rocket motor 1. The rocket motor 1 comprises a motor housing 2 which encloses a propellant charge of combustible material, for example a gunpowder charge 3. The other internal components of the rocket motor 1 have no significance for the invention and will not be described in more detail here.
The outer casing 4, or shell, of the rocket motor 1 is made up of wound or molded composite structures of carbon fibres, aramid fibers or combinations of these in a matrix of resins such as epoxy or polyester.
Fig.4 viser et utskytningsrør 8 for et missil 7. After the rocket engine's 1 jacket 4 has been manufactured, a metal coating 5 is applied to the side of the jacket 4 that faces outwards. One method of applying the metal coating is IVD (ion vapor deposit) treatment. Another method is to vaporize the metal on the composite surface in a vacuum chamber where the least possible amount of oxygen is present. The metal is then heated to the boiling point and evaporates and settles in this phase on the composite surface in a suitable thickness. The surface is completely covered. The thickness of the coating 5 can vary from a few µm to 40-50 µm depending on the intended function. The outer layer 5 can be a coating of metal chosen from aluminium, copper, nickel, silver, gold, etc. Fig. 2 shows a variant of a rocket engine housing 2' where the other rocket components are not drawn. As in the above embodiment, the housing 2' is made of a composite material and the outer surface is coated with a metallic coating 5, or layer, which is electrically conductive. Fig.3 schematically shows a storage pod 6 that accommodates a missile. The storage quiver 6 is made of a composite material which is externally coated with a metallic conductive layer 5. The coating shall serve the same purposes as described above. Fig.4 shows a launch tube 8 for a missile 7. The launch tube 8 is made of composite material which in turn is coated with a metallic conductive layer 5. It should be mentioned that the storage quiver 6 itself can also be used as a launch tube for the missile 7 in some versions. .5 shows schematically and an example of a gas container 9 which contains a flammable gas. As in the alternatives above, the gas container 9 is made of a composite material coated with a metallic current-conducting layer 5. The purpose of the layer is as previously described. Examples of gas containers of this type for civil purposes are propane containers, gas cylinders, fuel tanks and the like.
