Description
ISVERN FOR BEIN PÅ ISTILPASSET OPPJEKKBAR BOREENHET ICE PROTECTION FOR BONES ON ICE-ADAPTABLE DETACHABLE DRILL UNIT
OPPFINNELSENS OMRÅDE FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] This invention relates to mobile offshore drilling units, often called jack-up drilling units or rigs, which are used in shallow water, typically below 122 meters (400 feet), for drilling for hydrocarbons.
BAKGRUNN FOR OPPFINNELSEN BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] In the endless search for hydrocarbons, many oil and gas reservoirs have been discovered over the past one hundred and fifty years. Many techniques have been developed to find new reservoirs and resources, and most areas of the world have been searched for new discoveries. Few expect that new large, undiscovered resources remain to be found near inhabited areas and in places that are easy to get to. Instead, large reserves are found in more challenging and difficult to access areas.
[0003] One promising area is the offshore Arctic. However, the Arctic is remote and cold, where ice on the water creates significant challenges for prospecting for and production of hydrocarbons. Over the years, it has become common to assume that six unprofitable wells must be drilled for every profitable well. If this is indeed true, one must hope that the unprofitable wells will not be expensive to drill. In the Arctic, however, little, if anything, is cheap.
[0004] In shallow water in cold weather locations such as the Arctic, currently a jack-up or mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) can be used for about 45-90 days in the short open water summer season. Predicting when the drilling season will start and end is a game of chance, and a lot of work goes into determining when the jack-up rig can be towed to the drilling site and drilling can begin. Once started, it is very important to complete the well to avoid having to disconnect and pull out in the event of icing before the well is completed. Even during the few weeks of open water, ice floe is a significant threat to jack-up rigs when the rig is in place and the legs of the jack-up rig are exposed and quite vulnerable to damage.
[0005] Jack-up rigs are mobile, self-raising offshore drilling and working platforms equipped with legs adapted to be lowered to the seabed, and then lift the hull out of the water. Jackable rigs typically include the drilling and/or work equipment, the leg jack system, crew quarters, loading and unloading facilities, storage areas for bulk and liquid materials, landing decks for helicopters and similar facilities and equipment.
[0006] A jack-up rig is designed to be towed to the drilling site and jacked up and out of the water, so that wave action from the sea is only transferred to the legs, which have fairly small cross-sections and thus allow the wave load to pass without transferring significant movement to the jack-up rig . However, the legs of a jack-up rig offer little protection against ice floe collisions, and an ice floe of any significant size is capable of structural damage to one or more legs and/or dislodging the rig. If this type of event were to occur before the drilling operation was temporarily terminated and appropriate safeguards and shutdowns implemented, a leak of hydrocarbons could occur. Even a small risk of such a leak is completely unacceptable in the oil and gas industry, for the regulatory authority and for the public.
[0007] Thus, as soon as it has been determined that a potentially profitable well has been drilled during the short season, a very large, gravity-based production system or similar structure can be brought in and placed on the seabed for the long process of drilling and production of hydrocarbons. These gravity-based structures are very large and very expensive, but are built to withstand the forces of ice year-round.
KORT OPPSUMMERING AV OPPFINNELSEN BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0008] The invention specifically relates to an adapted jack-up rig for drilling for hydrocarbons in possible ice conditions in offshore areas comprising a floating hull with a relatively flat deck on its upper part. The floating hull further comprises an ice-bending shape along its lower portion and extending around the periphery of the hull, the ice-bending portion extending from an area of the hull near the deck level and extending downward near the bottom of the hull together with an ice deflecting portion extending around the perimeter of the bottom of the hull to guide ice around the hull and not under the hull. The rig comprises at least three truss legs placed within the perimeter of the bottom of the floating hull, the legs being adapted to be lifted from the seabed so that the rig can be towed in shallow water and also extended to the seabed and further extended to lift the hull partially or completely out of the water. A jacking device is connected to each leg to both lift the leg from the seabed so that the adapted jack-up rig can float by the buoyancy of the hull and push the legs down onto the seabed and push the hull partially up and out of the water when ice floe threatens the rig and completely out of the water when ice is not present. Ice protection for the legs is adapted to protect the truss legs against ice.
[0009] The invention further relates to a method for drilling wells in ice-prone waters. The method comprises producing a floating hull with a relatively flat deck on its upper part and an ice-bending shape along its lower part, the ice-bending shape extending from an area of the hull near the deck level and extending downward near the bottom of the hull and an ice deflecting portion extending around the perimeter around the bottom of the hull to direct ice around the hull and not under the hull. At least three truss legs are placed within the perimeter around the bottom of the hull, where each leg comprises several vertically oriented piles connected together with cross members and ice shields are placed between the piles to protect the cross members from ice. Each leg is jacked down so that feet at the bottom of the legs contact the seabed and lift the hull up and completely out of the water when ice does not threaten the rig while the rig is drilling a well at a drilling site. Furthermore, the hull is lowered into the water to an ice protection position so that the ice-bending shape runs above and below the sea surface to deflect ice coming towards the rig to cause the ice to dive underwater and is exposed to deflection forces that break up the ice where the ice flows past the rig.

DETALJERT BESKRIVELSE DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0019] Reference is now made to the detailed description of the preferred arrangement or arrangements of the present invention, where it is to be understood that the inventive features and concepts may be manifested in other arrangements, and that patent protection is not limited to those described and shown the embodiments. Patent protection is intended to be limited only by the protection in the subsequent patent claims.
[0020] As shown in Figure 1, a suitable jack-up rig is generally referred to by the arrow 10. In Figure 1, the jack-up rig 10 is shown with its hull 20 floating in the sea and legs 25 in a raised condition where much of the length of the legs 25 extends over the deck 21 of the hull 20. The legs 25 are constructed of long piles with cross elements that connect the piles in a truss. On deck 21 there is a derrick 30 which is used to drill wells. In the configuration shown in Figure 1, the jack-up rig 10 can be towed from one prospect field to another and to and from shore bases for maintenance and other shore services.
[0021] When the jackable rig 10 is towed to a drilling site in generally shallow waters, the legs 25 are lowered through the openings 27 in the hull 20 until the feet 26 on the lower ends of the legs 25 contact the seabed 15 as shown in figure 2.1 a preferred embodiment is the feet 26 connected to the spudcans 28 to attach the rig 10 to the seabed. As soon as the feet 26 contact the seabed 15, jacking rigs in the openings 27 push the legs 25 downwards and thereby lift the hull 20 out of the water. With the hull 20 fully jacked up and out of the water, any wave impact or heavy seas break past the legs 25 more easily compared to the effect of waves against a large floating object such as the hull 20. As shown in Figure 2, well drilling operations can commence in the ordinary case while not is ice in the area. When ice begins to form on the sea surface 12, however, the risk of an ice floe crashing into and damaging the legs 25 or simply breaking the jack-up rig 10 away from the drilling site becomes a significant factor for conventional jack-up rigs, and such rigs are typically removed from drilling sites at the end of the open water season. The fitted jack-up drilling rig 10 is designed to withstand ice floe by adopting an anti-ice position with the hull in the water as shown in Figure 3. In Figure 3, ice tends to dampen waves and rough seas, so the sea surface 12 appears less threatening, but the dangers in the marine environment have only changed and not diminished.
[0022] When the adapted jack-up rig 10 assumes its anti-ice position with the hull in the water, the hull 20 is lowered into the water into contact with it, but not to such an extent that the hull 20 will begin to float. A substantial proportion of the weight of the rig 10 preferably remains on the legs 25 to maintain the position of the rig 10 at the drill site against any pressure an ice floe may cause. The rig 10 is lowered so that the inwardly sloping ice-bending surface 41 spans the sea surface 12 or ice/water interface to contact any floating ice that may arrive on the rig 10.
[0023] The inclined ice-bending surface 41 runs from the shoulder 42, which is at the edge of the deck 26, down towards the neck 44. Ice deflector 45 runs downwards from the neck 44. When an ice floe, as shown at 51, arrives at the rig 10, thus the ice-bending surface 41 the leading edge of the ice floe 51 to dive below the sea surface 12 and exert a significant deflection force which breaks large ice floe into smaller, less damaging, less dangerous pieces of ice. For example, it is conceivable that an ice floe hundreds of feet and perhaps several miles across could come toward the rig 10. If the ice floe breaks into pieces less than six meters (twenty feet) in greatest extent, such pieces may pass around the rig 10 with much less worry.
[0024] Ice has substantial compressive strength in the range of 4 to 12 MPa, but is much weaker against bending with typical flexural strength in the range of 0.3 to 0.5 MPa. As shown, the force of the ice floe 51 moving on the sea surface 12 causes the leading edge to slide below the sea surface 12 and caused the portion 52 to break off. With the ice floe 51 broken up into smaller flakes, such as the section 52 and the piece 53, the smaller sections tend to flow past and around the rig 10 without experiencing the shocks or forces of a large flake. It is preferred that ice is not forced under the flat part of the bottom of the hull 20, and the ice deflector 45 turns ice so that it flows around the side of the hull 20. If the ice is really thick, the ice deflector 45 is adjusted so that it runs downwards at a steeper angle than the ice bending surface 41 and will increase the bending forces on the ice sheet. At the ice deflector 45, an ice deflector is positioned to extend down from the surface of the bottom of the hull 20.1 an optional arrangement is the lambing's turning the surface of the bottom at the lower end of the ice deflector 45.
[0025] To further resist the forces an ice floe can apply to the rig 10, the feet 26 on the legs can be adapted to connect to skirts 28 set in the seabed, so that when an ice floe comes against the ice-bending surface 41, the legs 25 actually hold the hull 20 down and forces the bending of the ice sheet and resists the lifting force from the ice sheet, which in an extreme case can lift the nearest side of the rig 10 and push the rig over to the side using the feet 26 on the opposite side of the rig 10 as a vertex or axis of rotation. The skirts in the seabed are known for other applications and the feet 26 would include suitable couplings for attachment and release from the skirts as desired.
[0026] It should probably be mentioned that the shift from a conventional drilling position in open water as shown in figure 2 to an ice protection position with the hull in water as shown in figure 3 may require considerable planning and preparation depending on which aspect of the drilling is in progress. While some equipment can be accommodated for changing height of the deck 21, other equipment may require disconnection or reconfiguration to adapt to a new height above the seabed 15.
[0027] The adapted jack-up drilling rig 10 is designed to work as a conventional jack-up rig in open water, but is also designed to be placed on the water in an ice protection condition and then resume the conventional position or configuration when wave action becomes important. It is the shape of the hull 20 (as well as its strength) that provides the ice bending and breaking capabilities.
[0028] One of the considerations that must be taken when operating a jackable rig in relation to potential ice formation is the exposed legs 25. To help protect the legs 25 from ice, ice guards 32 for the legs are attached between the legs' vertical poles 31 In Figure 5, the legs' ice protection 32 is bent to give a rounded shape to control any ice around the legs. In Figure 6, the legs' ice guards 33 are relatively flat. As shown in Figures 7 and 8, the legs' ice guards 32 and 33 are positioned on the legs so that they extend above, below and across the waterline 12, but not necessarily over the entire vertical length of each leg 25.
[0029] While the ice protection of the legs provides some protection for the legs, it should be noted that the legs 25 and the openings 27 connecting them to the hull 20 are within the perimeter of the ice deflector 45, so that the ice flakes come into contact with the legs 25 to a lesser extent while the rigging 10 is in its anti-ice condition as shown in figure 3 and also called hull-in-water configuration. Furthermore, the rig 10 does not need to be able to handle every ice floe threat in order to provide significant added value to oil and gas companies. If rig 10 can extend the drilling season by as little as a month, this will be a fifty percent improvement in some ice-prone areas, and therefore provide a very real cost saving for the industry.
