Description
Den foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører en anodemantel for selvbrennende anoder, såkalte Søderberganoder, for bruk i aluminiumelektrolyseceller. The present invention relates to an anode jacket for self-burning anodes, so-called Søderberg anodes, for use in aluminum electrolysis cells.
Cells or electrolytic furnaces for the production of aluminum according to Hall-Heroult consist of a rectangular, low, flat box of steel plates, bricked with refractory stone and lined with carbon blocks on the sides and bottom. The carbon blocks form a vessel for aluminum and the molten electrolyte. The carbon blocks at the bottom of the vessel are provided with steel rails for electrical connection to the current rails for the electrolytic current, these carbon blocks forming the cathode.
The molten electrolyte, which is lighter than the liquid aluminum, consists of molten cryolite + various salts, e.g. aluminum fluoride and calcium fluoride, as well as dissolved aluminum oxide. Aluminum oxide is consumed during electrolysis and must therefore be added frequently. During operation, the melt pool is covered by solidified melt, a crust. The crust is added or covered with aluminum oxide and/or other additive materials. It protects against heat loss, but is hard and must therefore be broken through with a crust breaker so that the oxide can get into the bath.
In electrolytic cells with Søderberg anodes, each cell is usually equipped with an essentially rectangular self-igniting anode.
The Söderberg anode consists of a permanent anode mantle of cast iron or steel that surrounds the self-baking carbon anode. Unbaked carbon-containing electrode mass is filled on top of the anode and the unbaked electrode mass is baked into a solid carbon anode due to the heat developed by the current supply to the anode and heat from the melting bath. An essential feature of the Søderberg anode is thus constituted by the fact that the baked anode is moved relative to the permanent anode mantle.
The Söderberg anode is held and supplied with electrical current via a large number of vertically arranged current bolts. The power bolts, which are usually made of steel, are inserted into the anode top where they are baked firmly to the anode. The anode bolts follow the downward movement of the anode until the lower ends of the bolts are at a certain distance from the bottom of the anode. The bolts are then pulled up and placed in a higher position. By ensuring that the tip position of the bolts in the anode is maintained in a varied pattern, there will always be a sufficient number of bolts in such a position that sufficient holding power and an even current transition to the anode are achieved.
A problem with Søderberg anodes of the type mentioned above is so-called "pocketing". The pocket formation consists of cracks or openings that extend from the outside of the anode near the lower end of the mantle and obliquely into and up into the baked anode. The cracks or openings into the anode seem to roughly follow the profile of the oven and often extend into the outermost row of bolts and in some cases, also into the innermost row of bolts. Pockets are usually detected either by so-called bolt hole mass flowing down into the bath during pulling/resetting of the anode bolts or by a characteristic lump forming on top of the anode above the pocket, which has its cause in this area ceasing to move relative to the anode jacket.
The reason for the pocket formation is believed to be that FeS/FeF2 forms at the lower end of the mantle in the boundary layer between the steel in the anode mantle and the baked carbon in the anode. It is assumed that this boundary layer is formed by reaction between the mantle and electrolytic gases such as COS and HF. This layer adheres well to both steel and carbon and the layer probably has a thermal expansion coefficient that lies between the thermal expansion coefficient for steel and carbon and the layer can thereby provide an equalization of the stresses that are formed during cooling.
Depending on the degree of pocket formation, the operation of aluminum electrolysis cells will deteriorate. Furthermore, strong pocket formation will lead to increased soot formation due to the run-off of bolt hole mass in the electrolyte.
From US patent no. 4257855 an anode is known for use in the electrolytic production of aluminium, where the anode consists of a bed of loose carbon pieces contained in a container made of an electrically conductive ceramic material. In this type of anode, pitch and tar-based binders are not used for the carbon particles and the problem of pocket formation therefore does not exist.
From Norwegian patent application no. 893033, a carbon electrode equipped with a self-supporting and temperature-resistant protective bell is known. The carbon electrode is used in electrolysis cells for refining aluminium. Pocket formation cannot occur when using this type of anode either.
Norwegian patent no. 171,309 describes the use of super concretes consisting of calcium aluminate cement, microsilica and an aggregate of bauxite. This type of concrete has high strength and temperature resistance, but it is not described in the Norwegian patent that the material is resistant to the atmosphere that prevails in aluminum electrolysis cells.
In Norwegian patent application no. 874716, a coating consisting of a carbon material and calcium aluminate cement is described for the protection of support beams for burnt anodes in aluminum electrolysis cells. However, there is no mention of the use of this coating for anode mantles in Søderberg anodes.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an anode jacket whereby pocket formation is avoided or at least greatly reduced.
The present invention thus relates to an anode jacket for Søderberg anodes for use in aluminum electrolysis cells, which anode jacket is characterized by the fact that at least the lower, inner part of the anode jacket is made of a ceramic material or a refractory casting compound which is resistant to the prevailing atmosphere and temperatures in an aluminum electrolysis cell.
According to a preferred embodiment, the anode mantle is made of steel or cast iron, where the lower, inner part of the mantle is equipped with a coating of ceramic material and/or refractory casting compound.
The refractory casting mass is preferably made up of a so-called super concrete based on a hydraulic cement such as Portland cement or calcium aluminate cement with the addition of densifiers such as microsilica. The super concrete used in the anode mantle according to the present invention has a compressive strength of at least 70 MPa and preferably at least 120 MPa according to ASTM standard C-39-86.
It is particularly preferred to use a refractory casting compound consisting of 15-30% by weight calcium aluminate cement, 5-10% by weight microsilica and the rest refractory aggregate, preferably AI2O3.
Microsilica is amorphous silica particles collected from electrothermal melting furnaces that produce at least 75% ferrosilicon, but amorphous silica from furnaces that produce 50% ferrosilicon can also be used as starting material for the present invention.
It is also possible to obtain microsilica as the main product from the above melting furnaces by adjusting the reduction conditions. Amorphous silica of this type can also be produced synthetically without reduction and reoxidation. Alternatively, a microsilica generator can be used to produce finely divided silica or silica can be produced by precipitation.
Microsilica består hovedsaklig av submicron kuleformede partikler. Microsilica mainly consists of submicron spherical particles.
The microsilica particles can, for example, contain 60 - 100% by weight SiO2 and have a density of 2.00 - 2.40 g/cm^ and a specific surface area of 15 - 30 m^/g. The particles are mainly spherical and have a particle size that is substantially smaller than glue. Variations in these values are of course possible. For example, microsilica can have a lower SiC»2 content and the particle size distribution can be adjusted, e.g. in that the coarse particles are removed.
It has been shown that by using an anode jacket according to the present invention, pocket formations are avoided. Furthermore, it has surprisingly been shown that anode mantles according to the invention are very resistant at the temperatures and the atmosphere that prevails in an aluminum electrolysis cell.
By avoiding the formation of pockets in the anodes, smoother and better anode operation is achieved with reduced soot formation, which leads to increased aluminum production.
Den foreliggende oppfinnelse vil nå bli beskrevet under henvisning til figurene, hvor, The present invention will now be described with reference to the figures, where,

Figure 1 shows an anode jacket for an aluminum electrolysis cell with an anode jacket consisting of an upper part 1 of steel. A steel flange 2 is attached to the upper part 1 of the anode jacket, which forms the outside of the lower part of the anode jacket. The inside of the flange 2 is coated with a refractory casting compound 3 consisting of 23% by weight of calcium aluminate cement, 6% by weight of microsilica and 71% by weight of aluminum oxide with a particle size of less than 4 mm.
The inner surface 4 of the refractory casting mass is flush with the inner surface 5 of the upper part 1 of the anode jacket.
To ensure sufficient rigidity of the anode sheath, the sheath is equipped on the outside with vertical flanges 6 and a horizontal flange 7. To ensure good adhesion between the flange 2 and the refractory casting compound 3, an anchoring sleeve can be attached to the flange 2 as indicated at 8.
The refractory casting mass was mixed with the addition of 5% by weight of water based on dry material and a phosphorus-based plasticizing agent sold under the trade name Calgon was added. The molding compound was cast on the flange 2 and then hardened and dried. The manufactured anode jacket was mounted in an aluminum electrolysis cell and after six months of operation, no signs of pocket formation can be registered. Nor could any wear or other damage to the anode sheath be registered.
