Description
The present invention relates to a device for a semi-submersible platform construction of the type that comprises at least two longitudinal pontoons and from these projecting columns that support a deck, as well as at least one additional unit that mainly contains at least one tank.
Such platform constructions are primarily intended for exploratory drilling for oil and gas and have eventually been built in significant numbers. However, the need for such platforms varies as certain fields are fully explored and before new exploration areas are opened up. It can therefore from time to time be difficult to find employment for the existing fleet of semi-submersible drilling platforms at rates corresponding to the bill.
Dessuten blir slike plattformkon-struks joner uforholdsmessig dyre for vanndyp på over ca. Offshore exploratory drilling in constantly new areas has led to the discovery of smaller oil and gas fields where production using fixed platform constructions of conventional types is not economically possible. Moreover, such platform constructions become disproportionately expensive for water depths of over approx.
150 m, while exploration drilling today takes place at depths down to 300 m and more.
From NO 161,248, a platform construction of the initially mentioned type is known which comprises two additional units. These additional units are arranged one on the inside of each pontoon and serve to give the platform additional buoyancy as it has been fitted with additional deck equipment of quite considerable weight. These buoyancy bodies can possibly be used as storage space for anchor chain during the platform's transit, but they will have to be mostly empty to provide the intended additional buoyancy when the platform is in working position. These additional units will therefore not make the platform suitable for exploiting smaller oil or gas fields.
The purpose of the present invention is both to satisfy the need for alternative employment for drilling platforms of the type mentioned at the outset and for production platforms that can make marginal oil fields viable.
This is achieved according to the invention by a platform construction of the type mentioned at the outset, where the characteristic is that the additional unit extends between said pontoons, and that said tank is a storage tank for crude oil or the like.
With the help of such an additional unit, the platform construction can be used as an efficient production platform. Usually, the produced crude oil will be transferred more or less directly to a tanker moored to the platform, but when changing tankers and when weather conditions do not allow a tanker to be moored to the platform, production can still take place continuously by the crude oil being temporarily stored in the additional unit's storage tanks.
As the additional unit is mounted between the platform construction's pontoons, the additional unit will lie relatively protected and will at the same time be able to form a structural element that increases the platform construction's strength and possibly bearing capacity.
The additional unit can advantageously be designed as an annular body of square shape. The additional unit can thus be given an optimal size, while the opening in the middle provides space for risers etc. and prevents the hydrodynamic wave forces on the additional unit from becoming too great. In the event of a later conversion back to a drilling platform, it will be possible to remove only the transverse parts of the annular body. The remaining longitudinal parts of the body can then serve to give the platform increased carrying capacity and payload.
According to the invention, at least one detached access shaft is also arranged between the additional unit and the deck of the platform structure. The location and dimensioning of the access shaft is preferably done so that it serves to stiffen the additional unit and at the same time provides a favorable increase in the construction's waterline cross-section. The additional unit is also provided with an access tunnel, which can be arranged in or outside the additional unit, which access tunnel is connected to the access shaft or
-sjaktene. - the shafts.
As one of several alternatives to the ring-shaped additional unit, two transverse additional units can be arranged, one at the front and one at the rear. These can be made the same and mounted symmetrically. Furthermore, it may be advantageous to mount the additional unit or units so that it or they lie entirely above the lowest waterline of the platform structure, i.e. at least partially above the top of the pontoons. The additional units can thereby be mounted without docking the platform structure, but by only floating the additional units into place while the platform structure is in a partially submerged state, after which it is raised and the additional units are welded. With the additional units in this position, they will also serve quite effectively to protect the drill string and riser against drifting objects, e.g. drivis, when the platform is in use.
However, it will also be possible to mount the additional units on the underside of the pontoons. In this case, the additional units are ballasted so that they rest on the bottom in a suitable place or hang from floats, after which the platform structure is floated into place over them. The additional units are then deballasted so that they raise the platform structure completely out of the water, after which the additional units and the platform structure can be connected to each other; here, too, without docking being necessary.
According to the invention, it is also proposed to make the additional units independent in the sense that they include the necessary pump room, waste water tank etc. in addition to the storage tanks, with equipment and pipes fully assembled in advance. In this way, the time required for assembly with the platform structure can be kept to a minimum.
For a better understanding of the invention, it shall be described in more detail with reference to the design examples shown in the attached drawings. Fig. 1 shows a vertical cross section through a platform construction according to the invention. Fig. 2 shows a ground plan of the platform in fig. 1, largely as a section along the line II -II in fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a ground plan of an alternative embodiment of the platform construction according to the invention.
The one in fig. The platform construction shown in 1 and 2 includes two longitudinal pontoons 1 with protruding columns 2 and 3 rising from them which support a deck structure 4. The pontoons contain a number of tanks 5 for e.g. ballast and fuel oil.
Between the pontoons 1 there is arranged an additional unit 6 which is designed largely as an annular body of square shape. The additional unit includes a number of storage tanks 7 for e.g. crude oil, and also has waste water tanks 8 and pump room 9. An access tunnel 10 is arranged inside the additional unit, which access tunnel is in connection with two access shafts 11 leading up to deck 4.
The additional unit is connected to the pontoons 1 by means of brackets 12, which are welded in places where the additional unit and the pontoons have internal bulkheads. If the platform construction is later to be converted back to a pure drilling platform, the brackets 12 can be burned over so that the entire additional unit is removed, or the longitudinal parts of the additional unit can be left in place while the transverse parts at the front and rear are removed. The remaining parts of the additional unit thus lead to an upgrade of the platform's load-carrying ability.
Fig. 3 shows an alternative embodiment where two additional units 13 and 14 are placed between the pontoons 1. These are similar and arranged symmetrically, one at the front and the other at the back of the platform structure. The additional units are also here divided into storage tanks 15 and are connected to the deck by means of an access shaft 16.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiments shown, but can be modified and varied in a number of ways within the framework and idea of the invention. Thus, the transverse parts of the additional unit can be placed closer to the center of the platform to provide less stamping movement. Furthermore, it can be advantageous to arrange additional columns, e.g. between the auxiliary unit and the deck, to provide greater moment of inertia and waterline area, while maintaining the platform's heave response close to its original value. Such further columns will also be able to be used as storage tanks.
