Description
The present invention relates to a smoking article of the type that appears in the preamble to the following independent claim.
Proposals have been made in the patent literature for simulated smoking articles which include a tubular casing and a body of carrier material arranged inside the casing. According to these proposals, carrier material is treated with an agent that evaporates when air is drawn through the casing. Proposals of this nature are available in US patent document no. 2721551; 2860638 and 3404692, South African Patent Document No. 697737 and British Patent Document No. 2032244. According to US 2860638 (Bartolo-meo), ZA 697737 (Zwarenstein) and GB 2032244 (Ray), the volatile agent by which the carrier material is treated is nicotine or may be nicotine.
Proposals have also been made in the patent literature for devices for increasing the nicotine delivery level for the main stream of smoke in cigarettes. It is proposed in US Patent No. 3422819 to treat the paper wrapper of a cigarette with a nicotine salt, the cigarette being provided with a second, outer wrapper to prevent the wrapper treated with nicotine salt from coming into contact with the smoker's lips. According to British patent document no. 1032330, it is prescribed to contact a particulate ion-exchange resin with nicotine and to incorporate the resulting nicotine-ion-exchange resin mixture into cigarette filters. According to the description in US patent no. 3584630, nicotine is adsorbed on a finely divided weak adsorbent which is then incorporated into the tobacco or into the tobacco smoke filters. The preferred adsorbents in US 3584630 are carbon black types.
In European patent document no. 174645, simulated smoking articles are described which include a short combustible carbonaceous fuel element and a substrate carrying an aerosol vaporizing substance, where the fuel element and the substrate are both in contact with heat conducting devices. Nicotine can be carried on the substrate.
It is an object of the present invention to provide in an improved way a cigarette, or similar smoking article, where during smoking, the nicotine level of the smoke emitted from the cigarette is greater than the nicotine level of the smoke that emanates from the downstream end of the smoking material stick of the cigarette.
It is a further object of the present invention to advantageously provide devices whereby the nicotine-to-tar ratio of the main stream smoke for a smoking article can be increased independently of the nicotine content of the smoking material in the smoking articles.
According to the invention, this is achieved with a smoker of the type mentioned at the outset which is characterized by the features that appear from the characteristic in the following independent claim.
The smoking material can be wholly or partially tobacco, where the tobacco is suitably in conventionally cut form. The tobacco may be air-aged, smoke-aged, Burley or Oriental-type, or may be a mixture of these. A proportion of the tobacco may be tobacco that has been subjected to an expansion process. It is also possible for the smoking material to include a reconstituted tobacco product or a tobacco substitute material. Preferably, the smoking material includes a nicotine source.
The smoking material rod may include a passage extending to the region of the downstream end of the rod, whereby, during smoking of the smoking article, hot smoke is directed to the downstream end of the rod. For further details of smoking articles which include such a passage, reference is made to British patent document No. 2149287A.
The polymeric material can be of a fibrous, cell-shaped or particle-shaped structure and this body is suitably of a cylindrical design.
The nicotine-carrying body of polymeric material can rest at its upstream and/or downstream end against a filter plug of e.g. cellulose acetate. Both upstream and downstream filter plugs are suitably used if the polymeric material is in particulate form.
The polymeric material of the nicotine-bearing body is advantageously polyethylene. Other suitable materials include polypropylene and polystyrene. The use of materials such as these provides marked advantages over previously known proposals. These materials can be manufactured in close and continuous compliance with predetermined physical and chemical specifications. These materials are also easy to subject to precise shaping by e.g. extrusion to provide rods from which cylindrical plugs can be cut. Such plugs are self-supporting, i.e. the plugs do not require any dimensional stability for encasement in a plug enclosure. Furthermore, these materials are not expensive and are clean to use in the cigarette manufacturing processes.
The nicotine carried by the body of polymeric material can be free nicotine, a nicotine salt or a nicotine derivative. In addition to nicotine, one or more volatile flavoring agents, menthol being one such agent, can be applied to the body of polymeric material.
The nicotine carried by the nicotine-bearing body should be in direct contact with the polymeric material of the body; i.e. that the nicotine should be unencapsulated.
If the nicotine in the nicotine-releasing element is free nicotine, a further smoke-permeable element, which further element carries an acid, can be placed next to the nicotine-releasing element. When using such an arrangement, with appropriate relative application of nicotine and acid, a salt with a ph value in the range of around 5-7 can be formed during smoking of the smoking article. The resulting change in ph of the mainstream smoke, from what might otherwise be a value above 7, serves to increase the sensory characteristics of the smoke. Suitable acids for this pH control purpose include lactic acid and tartaric acid.
While it is possible to apply a ph-adjusting acid to the nicotine-releasing element at the same location as the nicotine, it has been found that with such an arrangement the nicotine level in the mainstream smoke is not very much higher than that of the smoke exiting the downstream end of the smoking material rod. A significantly more effective arrangement occurs by applying acid to a separate element placed next to the nicotine-free element. The separate acid-bearing element is suitably placed on the side of the nicotine-releasing element which is further from the smoking material rod. In another arrangement, the nicotine-releasing element and the acid-bearing element are arranged in the same longitudinal zone of the smoking article where the elements occupy respective parts of the zone's cross-section. When this arrangement is used, there is preferably placed between the two elements a separating dividing wall formed of a vapor permeable material.
Cigarettes in accordance with the present invention are shown, through examples, in the attached drawings.
Sigaretten vist i fig. The cigarette shown in fig. 1 which is generally indicated by the reference number 1, includes a 64 mm long cigarette rod 2, a mouth end unit 3 and a filter tip casing 4 which serves to connect the rod 2 and the unit 3. The rod 2 includes as smoking material a low-nicotine, smoke-aged, cut-tobacco filler 5 and a cigarette paper wrapper 6. The mouth end unit 3 includes a cylindrical plug 7 of open-cell polyethylene, which has been impregnated with 3-10 mg of free nicotine, and a cylindrical filter plug 8 of cellulose acetate. As can be seen from the drawing, the plug 7, which is made up of a nicotine-releasing element, is arranged between and in contact with the smoking rod 2 and the filter plug 8.
When the cigarette 1 is smoked, tobacco smoke from the rod 2 passes through the plug 7 and thereby causes the nicotine in the plug 7 to evaporate. Nicotine vapor and tobacco smoke then pass through the filter plug 8. In this way, the nicotine delivery level of the mainstream smoke is increased in relation to the level that would be achieved if the cigarette did not include the nicotine-charged plug 7.
The filter tip cover 4 may be perforated in the area of the plug 7 and/or the plug 8 to allow ingress of ventilation air. preferably, if ventilation perforations are present, the perforations should be located in the area of the plug 8.
I fig. 1 for like deler. Sigaretten 1<*> i fig. In fig. 2, the depicted cigarette 1<*> has corresponding reference numbers to those in fig. 1 for equal parts. The cigarette 1<*> in fig. 2 is of the same structure as the cigarette 1 according to fig. 1 except that the mouth end unit 3 includes, instead of a filter plug, a further cylindrical plug of open-cell polyethylene indicated 8<*>. The plug 8', which is of the same length and physical structure as the plug 7, is impregnated with lactic acid.
It was found that when the plug 7 according to fig. 2 was impregnated with 10 mg of free nicotine and the plug 8' was impregnated with 10 mg of lactic acid, the nicotine level of the mainstream smoke flowing from the plug 8' during smoking of the cigarette, when measured over 9 machine smoked puffs, was increased by about 75# when compared to a simple one, i.e. a control cigarette without a filter tip with a cigarette stick similar to the cigarette according to fig. 2. The nicotine in the mainstream smoke as a percentage of the particulate matter (water and nicotine free) was 13, while for the control cigarette it was only 5.8.
A similar improvement in the nicotine level in the mainstream smoke to that exhibited by the cigarette of FIG. 2 would be expected from the cigarette according to fig. 1 if the plug in this was filled with 10 mg of nicotine..
In a further puff-by-puff experiment for nicotine emissions measured for cigarettes each containing a tobacco stick from a standard UK medium tar cigarette, a 10 mm long cellulose acetate filter element in contact with the tobacco stick, and a 10 mm long nicotine release element in contact with the filter element. The nicotine-releasing element included a plug of polyethylene impregnated with 10.8 mg of nicotine. Nicotine release values for these cigarettes were compared with those of the control cigarettes which included tobacco sticks of the above-mentioned standard medium tar type and 10 mm long cellulose acetate file elements like those of the experimental cigarettes. It was determined from these experiments that the mean nicotine delivery increase for the experimental cigarettes that included the nicotine release element when compared to the control cigarettes decreased from 0.10 mg for puff 1 to 0.07 mg for the last puff, puff 7.
