Description
The invention relates to a method for the production of powdered polyalkenes by polymerization of ethylene or copolymerization of ethylene with propene and/or 1-butene in gas phase, the polyalkene powder produced according to the invention being distinguished by the fact that it is particularly well suited to be processed into shaped objects on ordinary machines and devices for processing plastics, without prior granulation.
It is known that with special Ziegler catalysts based on vanadium compounds it is possible to produce polyalkenes that exhibit very good flow- or trickling properties, high apparent powder densities and narrow grain size distributions, and which, with a suitable choice of co-catalysts, are suitable both for processing in extruders and for injection mouldings.
However, these catalysts, which have been developed for the slurry process, cannot be used without further ado in the technically more advanced gas phase process.
In general, supported catalysts are used for gas phase polymerization of ethylene in a fluidized bed. The constituents of Ziegler catalysts, transition metal compounds, preferably from subgroup IV-VI of the periodic table, e.g. titanium, vanadium and chromium compounds, and organometallic compounds, preferably aluminum compounds, are, optionally in inert liquid hydrocarbons as a solvent and diluent, reacted with the catalyst carrier, e.g. silica gel, magnesium oxychloride, magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide or aluminum oxide or the like, and then dried, and the catalytically active solid thus obtained is, after the addition of organoaluminium compounds, usable for polymerisation. The transition metal-containing solid and the organoaluminum compound-impregnated solid can also be introduced separately into the polymerization zone of the fluidized bed reactor.
Dette kan føre All these inorganic catalysts containing carrier materials have the disadvantage that the polymers produced from them have a relatively high ash content. This can lead to
For eksempel kan katalysator-bærerne i harpikssmelten virke som crackingskatalysatorer, to highly undesirable effects during the processing of the polymers into finished articles. For example, the catalyst carriers in the resin melt can act as cracking catalysts,
Furthermore, when the resin is stored, absorption of moisture from the atmosphere can take place, which likewise leads to blistering in the extrudate, unless the material is subjected to a complicated drying process before processing. The polymerized powder that can be produced according to known techniques often leaves something to be desired with regard to flow and trickle properties and apparent powder density, so that these products must be granulated before they can be processed into molded parts in ordinary machines.
The method defined in claim 1 overcomes these disadvantages. The vanadium component (1) is obtained by mixing in an inert liquid hydrocarbon such as a saturated, straight-chain or branched, aliphatic or saturated alicyclic hydrocarbon, e.g. h-hexane, 2-methylpentane, 3-methylpentane, cyclohexane or mixtures thereof, at room temperature or possibly elevated temperature, the aforementioned starting substances react with each other. Suitable alcoholates are those which are commercially available and which have straight or branched radicals, especially those which have 2-4 hydrocarbons in the alkyl residue. Of the lower alcohols, ethanol, 1-propanol or 1-butanol are particularly useful. In order to obtain catalysts according to the invention, with which powdered polymers with high apparent density and excellent flow properties can be produced, it is necessary that the stated molar ratio is observed when reacting the vanadium compounds. In particular, the reaction of the thus obtained vanadium compound with the organoaluminium compound can suitably take place during stirring, as specific stirring powers of 0.1-20,000, preferably 1-5,000 W/m 3 are advantageous. Below this, the vanadium component precipitates as a solid. This can be separated from the hydrocarbon and dried under inert gas, e.g. very pure nitrogen or argon. Apart from other devices, primarily rotary evaporators or fluidized bed dryers are suitable for this.
The invention also relates to a method for producing a catalyst as stated in claim 2.
Suitable silica xerogels (2) which can be used according to the invention are preferably those which have particle sizes d' (DIN 66 145). of 50-150 um, specific surface areas (DIN 66 131) of approx. 200-700 m /g pg pore volumes of approx. 0.8-1.7 ml/g. These measurement data correspond to e.g. to the commercially available products "Ket jenselica F5" &KZO), "Kieselsåure K322".
(DEGUSSA) or "Silica gel grade 952" (GRACE). Silica xerogels with an ignition loss of less than 1% are preferably used. It is convenient to dry the silica xerogel by annealing before it is used.
The silica xerogel is preferably used in a weight ratio of between 2:1 and 4:1 calculated on the vanadium component, but lower or higher weight ratios can also be used. Lower weight ratio than approx. 0.5:1 no longer entails the effect according to the invention, and a higher weight ratio than approx. 10:1 would result in an undesirably high ash content in the polymer.
After evaporation, the silica xerogel can be mixed with the vanadium component, whereby already formed lumps again fall apart and a flowable powder is obtained. In many cases, however, it is advantageous before evaporation to add the finely divided silica xerogel in the quantity ratio indicated above to the catalyst component containing vanadium suspended in a hydrocarbon. This ensures from the beginning that agglomeration or formation of lumps is avoided.
The powdered vanadium component mixed with silica xerogel is then mixed with the indicated powdered polyalkene (3) with good flow properties. As such polyalkene, the same polymer or copolymer that one wishes to produce is particularly suitable.
The organoaluminum compound (4) is added to the mixture of the components (1), (2) and (3). However, it is more advantageous to incorporate the organoaluminium compound into the powdered polyalkene before it comes into contact with the mixture of components (1) and (2). Suitable organoaluminum compounds are particularly aluminum trialkyls, e.g. triisobutyl, tri-n-octyl, tri-n-dodecyl, tri-n-tetradecyl or tri-n-hexadecyl aluminum. Other suitable compounds are the known reaction products of a trialkylaluminum or dialkylaluminum hydride with a 1,3-diene, preferably of triisobutylaluminum or diisobutylaluminum hydride with isoprene, which" e.g.
er tilgjengelige i handelen som "isoprenylaluminium".j are commercially available as "isoprenylaluminum".j
The impregnation of the powdered polyalkene with the organo-aluminium component must of course take place under a covering gas, e.g. nitrogen or argon, and is suitably carried out in a mixing apparatus such as a plowshare mixer or a fluid mixer.
Også i andre kjente apparater The catalyst mixtures produced according to the invention have, as a result of their good flow properties, excellent handling. Thus, they allow themselves e.g. transport without problems or disturbances from storage silos and in dosing devices. The catalyst mixtures according to the invention can e.g. use for polymerization of ethylene resp. copolymerization of ethylene and propene and/or 1-butene in the gas phase in the known devices and by the methods described in DE-OS 16 07 648 and 17 45 114. Also in other known devices
er katalysatorene som følge av sine gode egenskaper uUen videre anvendelige. j the catalysts are, as a result of their good properties, no longer applicable. j
It is admittedly known from GB-A-2 010 870 to use supported Ziegler catalysts mixed with silica xerogel for polymerization of ethylene under suspension and solution conditions. This therefore concerns methods that use liquid hydrocarbons as a diluent, and the task is to avoid clogging in the reactor caused by excessive polymerization in the vicinity of the introduction point for the catalyst. The method according to the invention, on the other hand, solves a completely different task for which the aforementioned British patent application does not indicate any solution, namely a reliable problem-free handling of a solid, dry Ziegler catalyst in the devices and devices that serve for the production, transport and dosing of the catalyst of the polymerization reactor. Furthermore, the new process according to the invention allows the avoidance of the above-mentioned disadvantages of supported polymerization catalysts and the production of polymer powder of excellent quality.

Fremstilling av katalysatorene Preparation of the catalysts
182.8 g (1.055 mol) vanadyl(V) chloride and 257.6 g (1.055 mol) vanadyl(V)-n-propylate were stirred together in 1.66 1 of a hexane fraction 63/80°C for one hour at room temperature. This mixture and a solution of 535.7 g (4.22 mol) ethylaluminum chloride in 2.3 1 of the hexane fraction 6 3/80°C were added synchronously and over the course of two hours to 2 1 of the hexane fraction at 25°C under stirring with a blade stirrer and a specific stirring power of 1000 W/m . The obtained suspension was then further heated for two hours under reflux and simultaneously stirred with the same specific stirring power. After cooling, the solid was separated, washed five times with 5 L of the hexane fraction and then suspended in 6 L of the hexane fraction.
A portion of the suspension was now mixed with the silica xerogel "Ketjensilica F5" (AKZO), which had already been heated to 800°C for three hours (loss on ignition 0.7% by weight at 1000°C for 1 hour), in a weight ratio of solid and silica xerogel at 1:1, 1:2 and 1:4 (as shown in Table 1). The hexane was then distilled off in a rotary evaporator at 50°C and 113 mbar and the residue then dried at 50°C and 7 mbar until the weight was constant.
Dried polyethylene powder was loaded onto a heated mixer with ploughshare-like blades and dried for 5 hours at 50°C and a pressure of 10 mbar. Then very pure nitrogen was allowed to flow into the mixture. Over the course of two hours, a solution of the above-mentioned trialkyl aluminum in hexane was added dropwise (as shown in table 1). The batch was then mixed for a further 3 hours.
The product of the vanadium component and "Ketjensilica F5" was then allowed to trickle into the indicated polyethylene/alkyl aluminum mixture and the whole was mixed for 15 min.
Nærmere detaljer om katalysatorfremstillingen er gitt i tabell 1. Further details of the catalyst preparation are given in Table 1.
Polymerisasjon Polymerization
Eksempel 1- 5 Example 1-5
De aktuelle polymerisasjonsbetingelser og A cylindrical, horizontally arranged steel autoclave with a volume of 1.65 1 was used for the polymerization, where the polymerizate was kept in motion by stirring elements (blades and offset elements) placed on an axle. For the polymerization, 90-130 g of polyethylene powder, which had been dried for 5 hours at 50°C and 67 mbar, and which had been made inert by stirring for three hours with 7 mmol of tris-(n-dodecyl)-aluminium, was placed in the autoclave. per 100 g of polyethylene. For this purpose, the catalyst sample to be used was introduced into a countercurrent of nitrogen. After 15 minutes of stirring to distribute the catalyst in the placed polyethylene, the apparatus was set to a hydrogen pressure (partial pressure) of 5 bar and heated to the polymerization temperature of 80°C, while the ethylene was then slowly added. Polymerization was then carried out for 5 hours at a pressure of 33 bar. After the end of the polymerization period, the polymerization was stopped by pressure relief of the monomers. The relevant polymerization conditions and

The polymerization conditions were the same as in Example 1. The polymerization results are listed in Table 4.
Eksempel 16 Example 16
For catalyst preparation, 346.6 g (2.0 mol) of vanadyl (V) chloride and 18 0.3 (3.0 mol) of 1-propanol were heated together with 1.59 1 of a 63/80° hexane fraction C for two hours under reflux, during which hydrogen chloride was evolved. Then, this mixture and a solution of 507.8 g (4.0 mol) ethylaluminum dichloride in 2.25 1 of the hexane fraction at 63/80°C were added over the course of two hours to 2 1 of the hexane fraction at 28°C and under nitrogen and under stirring with a blade stirrer and a specific stirring power of 95 W/m 3. The suspension thus obtained was heated for a further 1 hour under reflux and simultaneously stirred with the same stirring power. After cooling, the solid was taken out, washed 5 times with 5 1 of the hexane fraction each time and then suspended in 6 1 of the hexane fraction. The catalyst preparation was then continued in exactly the same manner as in Example 2. The polymerization was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1. The polymerization conditions were the same as in Example 1. The polymerization results are listed in Table 4.
