Description
The present invention relates to a valve seat for a control valve which has a rotatable valve body for opening and closing the valve, which valve seat comprises an annular, polymeric body with a mainly radially outwardly open groove and with a seating surface arranged to form sealing contact with the valve body when this is closed , as well as spring means which are stored in the groove.
Valves that include rotatable valve bodies, such as butterfly valves, are used to a large extent in industry, for regulation and control of fluid flows. Such valves, particularly butterfly valves, have been used for controlling various fluid flows at ambient temperatures or moderate temperatures and pressures, as the materials commonly used in the seats of such valves have a tendency to flow or to be extruded at high temperatures, so that leakage occurs in the valve. Moreover, many such materials, for example certain types of rubber, are very susceptible to chemical attack from certain fluids, and are thus unacceptable for use in valves used for such fluids.
There are various polymer materials that are completely inert, in the sense that they resist chemical attack and degradation, and also withstand high temperatures. Of such polymers, mention should be made of fluorocarbon resins or polymers, such as, for example, polytetrafluoroethylene. While the fluorocarbon polymers have excellent properties in resisting chemical attack and can withstand high temperatures, they have little or no elasticity and tend to cold flow when subjected to repeated loads. Such polymers lack "shape memory" and when compressed, repeatedly or for longer periods, they do not later assume their original shape. Valve seats made of polytetrafluoroethylene or similar materials will, after they have been sufficiently stressed, repeatedly be damaged due to cold flow to such an extent that they do not seal effectively, and they therefore cause leakage through the valve.
There are known valves with rotatable valve bodies, and which have seats where a thin coating of polytetrafluoroethylene or similar material is applied to a base material of rubber, in order to obtain a valve with a seat which withstands chemical attack, and which can to some extent withstand high temperatures, but which are not exposed to cold flow due to the elasticity of the rubber base material. There are also known valves with rotatable valve bodies, in which a seat of polytetrafluoroethylene is pressed radially inward by means of a spring, to prevent cold flow.
For seats where springs or elastomers, such as rubber, are used to provide "shape memory" to a polytetrafluoroethylene seat, contact occurs between the valve damper and the seat long before the damper is moved to the fully closed position, and the contact increases as the damper is moved to the closed position score. This contact between damper and seat causes wear, particularly in the area where the damper is supported, that is to say in the diametrically opposed areas where the damper is rotatably stored through the seat. With such known valves, the torque on the damper and thus the dimensioning of the drive device is important, as considerable resistance to closing occurs long before the damper has been moved to the fully closed position. These problems can be partly avoided by the use of dampers that are offset to both sides, which can prevent contact between the damper and the seat for up to 60 -
70° av spjeldbevegelsen fra åpen til lukket stilling. Imidlertid vil det oppstå kontakt under de siste 20 - 30° 70° of the damper movement from open to closed position. However, contact will occur during the last 20 - 30°
av bevegelsen, hvilket bevirker problemer med slitasje på setet. of the movement, which causes problems with wear on the seat.
It is therefore an aim of the present invention to arrive at a valve seat which entails a solution to this problem.
Another object of the invention is to arrive at a valve seat of a material which is chemically inert and which resists
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved valve seat which is made of a polymer material which tends to cold flow when subjected to repeated compression loads.
According to the invention, this has been achieved by the spring means having the form of several windings which are wound around a curved end surface in the groove, and each of which comprises a cord or string whose center line mainly extends along the entire length of the string mainly peripherally in relation to the seat surface so that in at least some of the windings are in contact with the seat, as the windings in the valve's closed position are exposed to tensile stresses as a result of peripheral strain.
The cord or string may be formed of a suitable metal, with such elastic and strength-wise properties that in a certain position during the movement of the damper to the closed position, the seat and windings will expand radially outwards, causing tensile stresses in the windings. Such stresses will cause a radially inwardly directed force which prevents expansion of the seat and causes sealing between the damper and the seat. The forces are similar to the forces that occur in a thin-walled pressure vessel subjected to internal pressure.
En vesentlig fordel ved denne understøttelsen av setet er A significant advantage of this support for the seat is
Det oppnås derfor en vesentlig minsket seteslitasje og minsket dreiemoment på spjeldet. that the windings have little or no ability to resist radial expansion of the seat before the damper is almost completely closed. Thus, the contact between the damper and the seat when the damper approaches the closed position will not cause such a degree of contact as occurs when the seat is affected by a spring or an elastomer. A significantly reduced seat wear and reduced torque on the damper is therefore achieved.
The invention will be explained in more detail in the following, with reference to a preferred embodiment, shown in the figures

The invention will be described with reference to a butterfly valve, but it will be understood that the invention is not limited to such a valve. The valve seat can be used for valves with other types of rotatable valve bodies, such as, for example, a ball valve, a check valve, etc.
Fig. 1 shows a butterfly valve 10, with a mainly annular valve housing 12 which has a continuous fluid channel 14. The valve housing 12 is designed to be placed between opposite pipe flanges (not shown). Projecting from the valve housing 12 is a cylindrical neck 16 formed integrally with the housing 12. A flange 18 formed on the neck 16 constitutes a means for attaching a drive device (not shown) to the valve 10. Diametrically opposite the neck 16, a boss 20 projects from the house 12.
Rotatable stored in the fluid channel 14 is a valve flap 22, which has a circumferential sealing surface 23 which is rounded. The damper 22 is held by a first spindle 24 arranged in a bore 26 in the neck 16 and a second spindle 28 arranged in a bore 30 in the boss 20. The spindle 24 is attached to the damper 22 by means of pins 34 and 36. In a similar way, the spindle 28 attached to the damper 22 by means of a pin 40.
The spindle 24 is stored in the bore 26 by means of a sleeve 42. The fluid is prevented from penetrating from the valve 10 through the bore 26 by means of sealing rings 44, which are held in place by a sealing sleeve 46. The upper end 25 of the spindle 24 projects above the circular flange 18, and has mutually opposite, planar surfaces 40, which constitute means for placing a steering wheel, a wrench or other drive device, to turn the damper 22 to open and close the valve 10.
The spindle 28 is stored in the bore 30 by means of a sleeve 50. The spindle 28 also has a projecting bolt 52 which is threaded and screwed into a threaded bore 54 in a positioning sleeve 56. The positioning sleeve 56 has a flange 58 which lies towards the end of the boss 26, to prevent movement of the positioning sleeve 56 in the bore 30. The positioning sleeve 56 holds the damper 22 in the correct place in the axial direction of the spindles 24 and 28. The positioning sleeve 56 is held in place by a cover plate 62, which also seals the bore 30 against fluid leakage , as the cover plate is attached with bolts 80 to the boss 20, and has a recess for the flange 58, as a gasket 63 is arranged between the cover plate 62 and the boss 20.
Sealing between the damper 22 and the valve housing 12, around the circumference of the fluid channel 14, is achieved by means of an annular seat 60.
The seat 60 is placed in a recess 70 on one side of the housing 12, which recess has an annular shoulder 71 (see fig. 3 - 6) equipped with annular grooves 100 which project axially from the shoulder 71. When the seat 60 is placed in the valve 10 and the valve 10 is fixed between pipe flanges, the seat 60 is compressed against the grooves 100 by an annular holding plate 72 which is inserted into a recess 74 on one side of the housing 12. It will be seen that the holding plate 72 is also equipped with circumferential grooves 73.
As shown in fig. 3-6, the seat 60 has a substantially U-shaped cross-section, with a radially outwardly open, annular groove 68 bounded by circumferential flanges 68a and 68b. A support ring 66 is placed in the groove 68, which can be a split ring (see Fig. 2) and is equipped with grooves 101a and 101b on each of its axially facing sides. According to a preferred embodiment, the valve seat 60 and the support ring 66 are dimensioned such that the sum of the axial thicknesses of the flanges 68a and 68b and the support ring 60 is greater than the distance between the grooves 100 on the shoulder 61 and the grooves 73 on the retaining plate 72. Follow -like, and because the seat 60 is made of a polymer material, the grooves 101, 101b, 101a and 73, when the plate is placed against the valve housing 12 and the valve 10 is fixed between pipe flanges, will penetrate the flanges 68a and 68b, and effect retention of the seat and sealing between the outer edge portion of the seat 60 and the valve body 12, and prevents "expulsion" of the seat when the valve 10 is subjected to high pressure, a common problem that occurs with seats made of polymeric material.
The groove 68 is bounded on the inside by a curved surface 69. Wrapped around the surface 69 are several windings 102, of a material which is sufficiently elastic in the longitudinal direction to act as an elastic band against the seat 60 when the damper 22 is in the closed position, so that the windings 102 is stretched in the circumferential direction when the seat 60 and the damper 22 lie tightly against each other.
The windings 102 may comprise a single string or cord which is wound several times around the surface 69, or alternatively the windings may comprise several strings or cords which are wound around the surface 69. According to a preferred embodiment, the windings 102 are wound around the surface 69 so that the seat 60 is not affected until the damper 22 is almost completely closed, that is to say that radial forces between the seat 60 and the damper 22 are very small. It will be understood, however, that if a seat pressure is desired for complete closure, that is before the damper 22 is brought completely sealingly against the seat 60, the windings 102 can be wound in such a way that the seat 60 is pre-tensioned, before the damper 22 is in contact with the seat.
The windings 102 are preferably formed of metallic materials, such as stainless steel or the like. However, the windings 102 can also be made of other materials, such as, for example, nylon filaments or other synthetic polymer materials, thermoplastic or thermosetting, which provide the necessary elastic and strength properties to be able to provide a radially inward acting force on the valve seat when the valve element and the seat lie tightly against each other, where the windings are stretched, that is, when the valve is closed. For example, filaments of nylon, polyester etc. can be used. The primary thing when choosing material in the windings 102 is that it has the necessary properties as indicated above with regard to providing radial force, and that it can withstand the temperatures to which the valve is exposed. Thus, when the valve is to be used for high pressure and high temperature, windings of a metallic material are preferred. The term string or cord is used here not only for filaments or fibers, for example monofilaments, but also includes braided wire or the like where the individual filaments or fibers are used to form a composite string or cord of several filaments. An example of a suitable multifilament wire for forming the turns 102 is a material known as ACCULON AN 27 manufactured by Cable Strand Corporation, Long Beach, California. ACCULON AN 27 consists of seven wires with a diameter of 0.125 mm, of 302 stainless steel, braided and surrounded by a coating of nylon. As a typical example, mention should be made of a butterfly valve with a seat as described above, which is wound around ten turns of ACCULON AN 27, which seat had excellent properties with regard to withstanding high temperature and high pressure.
The present invention relates in particular to valve seats which are made of polymer material, either natural or synthetic, which has little or no elasticity and which tends to flow cold when subjected to repeated loads. Such materials lack "shape memory", so that when subjected to repeated or sustained loads, they do not return to the shape they had before the load. A typical example of such polymer materials are fluorocarbon resins, such as polytetrafluoroethylene. Fluorocarbon resins are well suited as polymer material for a valve seat according to the present invention, because they are chemically inert and can withstand high temperature. The polymer material from which the valve seat is made can contain additives or fillers, for example reinforcing materials, and it can be a mixture of two or more polymer materials, and the material can be adapted to the conditions of use for which the valve is intended.
It may also be desirable to arrange means to prevent the windings 102 from cutting into the seat, particularly when they are metallic. For this purpose, the metal cords or strings can be encased in a durable material, such as nylon. Alternatively, a shield or barrier can be placed between the surface 69 and the windings 102. Such a barrier should be made of durable material, but must not prevent the necessary movements of the windings 102 and the seat 60. Fig. 3 shows the valve in the open state, and it it will be seen that the seat has an annular, beveled contact surface 61. When the seat is moved in the direction of the arrow A, i.e. towards the closed position (see fig. 4), without any fluid flow or pressure acting against the damper 22, the sealing surface 23 will the damper 22 and the chamfered sealing surface 61 on the seat 60 come into mutual contact, and the seat 60 will be deformed, in the area 101, that is to say it will be deformed axially between the housing 12 and the plate 72. In the condition shown in fig. 4, that is, when there is no flow or pressure, and consequently no deformation of the damper, the seat 60 is pressed radially outwards, and the radial expansion causes a pressure between the damper and the seat, formed by the windings 102 which are stretched in the longitudinal direction and cause a force which acts radially inwards, and seeks to press the inclined surface 61 of the seat 60 into sealing contact against the sealing surface 23 of the damper 22. Fig. 5 shows the situation when there is a flow through the valve in the direction of the arrow P^, the pressure acting against the damper 22 causes a deformation of this, which is compensated for by the seat 60 moving axially in the direction of flow, that is to say in the direction of the arrow P^. However, the radially inward force due to the windings 102 will maintain a sufficient pressure between the seat 60 and the damper, so that sealing is achieved even if the pressure is relatively high.
Det opprettholdes trykk mellom spjeldet og setet på grunn av den radiale kraft som dannes av vindingene 102, og skråflaten 61 på setet 60 og tetteflaten 23 på spjeldet 22 drives til Fig. 6 shows the position of the damper 22 and the seat 60 when there is a pressure which gives a force in the direction of the arrow P^, that is to say in the opposite direction to the direction of flow shown in fig. 5. As shown, deformation of the damper is compensated for by axial movement of the seat 60 against the retaining plate 72. Pressure is maintained between the damper and the seat due to the radial force generated by the windings 102, and the inclined surface 61 of the seat 60 and the sealing surface 23 of the damper 22 is operated
