Abstract
Friksjonsmaterial for koblinger, bremser o.l.Friction material for couplings, brakes and the like
Description
The invention relates to a friction material for couplings, brakes etc., which consists of fibre-shaped iron particles, organic binders and ordinary fillers.
The so-called organic friction materials, especially for couplings and brakes, are generally composed of asbestos fibres, organic binders, e.g. network-forming synthetic resins, such as phenolic resin, and natural or synthetic rubbers, as well as fillers, which consist of metal shavings, metal oxides and other mineral construction materials. Mineral particles make up the majority of organic friction materials.
Ved tilvirkning av sådanne organiske friksjonsmaterialer har When manufacturing such organic friction materials have
På denne måte forebygges riktignok faren for utvikling av nevnte sykdommer, men disse tilleggstiltak fører på den annen side til vesentlig forhøyede tilvirknings-omkostninger for det ferdige produkt. it has been shown that asbestos fibres, especially of a specific fiber length, can have harmful effects on health. It is thus assumed that such fibers during the manufacturing process can cause diseases such as asbestosis or silicosis. This risk of occupational disease occurring is usually countered by good airing and ventilation of the workplaces during the production of such friction materials. In this way, the risk of the development of the aforementioned diseases is indeed prevented, but these additional measures, on the other hand, lead to significantly increased production costs for the finished product.
Extensive attempts have already been made to find substances that can replace asbestos fibers in the production of friction materials. However, all such trials have so far shown that the special properties that the asbestos fibers give the friction material cannot be achieved in any other way. The extensive use of asbestos has therefore continued in the production of organic friction coatings of the present type.
On the other hand, it is known to produce so-called combination materials, which exhibit a sintered skeleton of metal threads which form a matrix and whose pores are filled with organic and/or inorganic fillers. French Patent Document No. 1,286,571 and German Patent Document No. 1A25-261 deal with such materials in another connection, namely as friction coatings on sintered bodies, an iron material constituting the predominant part of the sintered body. The metal mixture of iron with the addition of copper and carbon material, especially graphite, is sintered into a sintering body. Below this, the iron material can also be present in the form of threads or fibres, which are, however, of a macroscopic size, e.g. with an average length of 3 mm and a diameter of approx. 0.1 mm. From US patent document no. 3-18M-368 it is further known to use metal fibers of considerable length in sintered combination materials for the production of shaped bodies, such as tool parts and similar machine parts, the fibers forming a fine thread pattern to obtain a porous product . In the case of such sintering bodies, it is a matter of course that the main part of the body is made up of iron. The inorganic or organic pore fillers included in the combination material most often have the purpose of imparting a lasting lubricating effect to the material in question and/or to increase the material's compressive strength. Frik's ion technology, however, such construction materials cannot have any significance, as they do not show any advantages whatsoever compared to conventional sintering materials.
Furthermore, attempts have been made to replace the asbestos fibers in organic friction materials in a simple way with metal wool. However, due to their unfavorable physical properties, such friction materials have not gained any importance. Firstly, above average wear of the counter material (brake drum or disc) prevents further use.Furthermore, the so-called "morning sickness" to which free ion coatings with steel wool are exposed is extremely unfavorable. This "morning sickness" manifests itself in the fact that brakes in vehicles that have been parked outdoors at night tend to block during the first braking in the morning, as rust has been deposited on the detached steel fibers in the friction surface, so that the initial value of the friction coefficient is subject to a strong increase.
Against this background, it is an aim of the present invention to provide a friction material which in its composition is adapted to previously known organic friction materials, but which is free of asbestos fibers and has at least as good friction properties as the previously known materials.
According to the present invention, this is achieved by replacing the asbestos threads with iron particles which have a fibrous microstructure with microfibres in a branched form, preferably with numerous branches, and a mass specific gravity below 1.5 g/cm^.
The use of metal spores or metal powder as support material in so-called organic friction material is known per se. However, such metal shavings and especially metal powder are not capable of taking over the role of asbestos fibers in a friction material of the present kind. However, it has surprisingly been shown that by the cooperation of the above-mentioned special features according to the invention, an organic friction material can be obtained which has at least as good and partly better friction properties than corresponding materials containing asbestos fibres.
It has thus been shown that the flow properties of the friction material according to the invention when compressed into finished products are significantly more favorable than when asbestos fibers are used. The achieved coefficient of friction also exceeds the corresponding value for a material built on asbestos fibres.
Mikrostrukturen av dette vedheftede metallfiberskjelett The highly branched fiber structure of the iron particles provides a finely distributed and extensive anchoring of the microscopic iron particles, which provides a firm joining and increased reinforcement of the friction material. A large and strongly distributed surface is thus achieved which adheres well to the matrix. The microstructure of this attached metal fiber skeleton
fører videre til vesentlig gunstigere sllteegenskaper enn ved anvendelse av asbéstfibre. further leads to significantly more favorable thermal properties than when asbestos fibers are used.
According to a further distinctive feature of the present invention, the microfibers of the iron particles used have a cross-section that is smaller than approx. 10 jam, while the ratio between the fibers' length and cross-sectional diameter can be 5:1 to 20:1. The proportion of iron microfibres in the friction material can amount to approx. 20 - 70 percent by weight.
On the only attached drawing, an example of the microstructure of metal particles of the present kind is shown on a greatly enlarged scale. As shown in this figure, the microstructure of the iron particles shows fibers of relatively large length and with many breaking points and branches, the branches more or less interlocking with each other. These iron particles with a microfiber structure can have varying diameters along their length. However, the cross-sectional diameter at the thickest point is usually less than 10 µm. Due to the frequent branching of the fibers and their numerous breaking points, such iron particles with a microfiber structure can be easily and to a considerable extent brought together.
An iron material for present particles with microfiber structure preferably has the following composition: C: 0.1 - 1%, S: 0.02%, P: 0.03%, Mn: 0.3%, Si: 0.15%, metallic Fe: 97% and the rest Fe II and Fe III in oxide form.
The friction material according to the invention can, as an embodiment, have the following composition:
