Description
The present invention relates to such explosive mixtures, often called slurry explosives, which consist of an aqueous mixture of oxygen-releasing salts and combustible substances of various kinds.
Spesielt vedrører den slike sprengstoffblandinger hvor In particular, it relates to such explosive mixtures where
de brennbare stoffer er eller omfatter et flytende og i vann ikke nevneverdig løselig stoff. the combustible substances are or comprise a liquid substance that is not appreciably soluble in water.
As oxygen-consuming or combustible components in the so-called slurry explosives, substances of very different kinds are mentioned in the patent literature. Of solid substances that are not themselves explosive, it has been proposed and put into use i.a. bituminous substances, various organic substances, and metals. What these have in common is that it is important for the properties of the resulting explosives to what extent these combustible substances are finely divided.
Som en egen klasse av slurry-sprengstoffer må man anse As a separate class of slurry explosives must be considered
De hyppigst omtalte slurry-sprengstoffer av denne klasse inneholder hydrokarboner av forskjellig slag, vanligvis petroleum-fraksjoner som betegnes brenseloljer eller dieseloljer, som den brennbare komponent i blandingen. those that contain a liquid substance that is not significantly soluble in water. The most frequently mentioned slurry explosives of this class contain hydrocarbons of various kinds, usually petroleum fractions called fuel oils or diesel oils, as the combustible component of the mixture.
It is thus known from US-PS 3 161 551 to produce explosives of this kind. The use of a hydrophobic emulsifier, which is able to form a water-in-oil emulsion, is also indicated there, as a characterizing feature of the described explosive. AU-PS 281 537 discusses similar explosives and the use of non-ionic surfactants in them. Such explosives which contain a liquid, not appreciably soluble in water, combustible material, usually also contain thickeners of a known nature, preferably guar gum, and may of course also contain other components. US-PS 3 094 069 thus describes explosives which contain aluminum powder alongside a fuel oil.
It is of course important for the properties of the manufactured explosives also when liquid fuels are used, the extent to which these are finely divided, i.e. how the emulsion of fuel and the aqueous salt solution is produced and that it is stable.
Det er således f.eks. angitt at emulgeringsmidler som anvendes, It is thus e.g. stated that the emulsifiers used,
skal være hydrofobe og stabilisere en vann-i-olje-emulsjon. Det er også foreslått å la brenselet suges opp i ammoniumnitrat som foreligger i form av porøse prills før disse benyttes til fremstilling av den endelige blanding. must be hydrophobic and stabilize a water-in-oil emulsion. It is also proposed to allow the fuel to be soaked up in ammonium nitrate which is in the form of porous prills before these are used to produce the final mixture.
The present invention partly consists in using such a component in the explosive mixture that both the liquid fuel is very easily dispersed in an aqueous salt solution and that the obtained emulsion is very stable. It has been surprisingly found that lignosulphonates, which are present in the so-called sulphite liquors from the production of wood cellulose by the sulphite boiling method, are a particularly suitable component in slurry explosives containing a liquid fuel. These lignosulfonates are water-soluble, in contrast to previously proposed emulsifiers for slurry explosives with liquid propellants, and it is believed that the lignosulfonates stabilize an emulsion of the oil-in-water type. The emulsion-forming and -stabilizing effect of lignosulphonates is in itself previously known, but it is not known that this effect is so pronounced in a system where the water phase is a saturated solution of oxygen-releasing salts, preferably nitrates.
It is previously known from Norwegian patent no. 112 484 to use lignosulfonates in slurry explosives. This patent only mentions slurry explosives where the fuel is solids or water-soluble substances, and it thus does not reveal any use or special advantages of lignosulfonates in connection with liquid, non-water-soluble fuels, which is a characteristic feature of the present invention invention.
In the aforementioned Norwegian patent, the lignosulfonates are designated as a sensitizer, i.e. an agent that increases the explosive's sensitivity to initiators, although no explanation or theory for this sensitizing effect has been given. It is part of the present invention that this sensitivity-increasing effect does not least apply when the fuel of the explosive is a liquid substance. The invention therefore essentially consists in one and the same substance being both an effective emulsifier for liquid fuels and a sensitivity-increasing component in the mixture. It is also part of the present invention that lignosulfonates have additional beneficial effects in relation to previously known emulsifiers for slurry explosives with liquid fuels. In many cases, it is appropriate to transfer the aqueous, thickened salt solution in the explosive to a gel by means of a so-called cross-linking agent for the thickener's high-polymeric molecules, as thereby i.a. a significantly improved water resistance of the explosive is achieved. As cross-linking agents, compounds of heavy metals from the periodic table group 4, 5 or 6 in their highest valence step, such as chromates, antimonates or titanates, are particularly relevant. It is known per se that the reactions leading to this cross-linking or gel formation proceed faster or more completely in the presence of reducing agents. It is thus also a feature of the present invention that lignosulphonates are also suitable as such an aid for this gel formation, in contrast to what is the case with previously proposed emulsifiers. Overall, it has thus been surprisingly found that lignosulfonates in total have three separate, beneficial effects in the relevant class of explosives, which makes the use of different components for each of these functions redundant.
It is finally part of the present invention that the use of lignosulfonates in connection with liquid fuels entails significant economic advantages. The lignosulfonates are much cheaper than most known or proposed emulsifiers for slurry explosives with liquid fuels. They are also cheaper than the reducing agents that have been proposed as aids for cross-linking reactions with chromates and antimonates. And seen in relation to use together with solid fuels, the present invention implies that all costs of crushing the solid substances are eliminated, as the fine distribution of the liquid fuels takes place in and with the mixing operation which produces the finished explosive. There is also an economic advantage in that ordinary fuel oil is cheaper than most of the solid substances that have so far been proposed as fuels in slurry explosives.
When practicing the present invention, there is no method that is of critical importance, and the mixture of the explosive components can be carried out in many different ways. A preferred method is to prepare an aqueous solution of the oxygen-releasing salt(s), thickeners and lignosulfonates, and then add the liquid fuel in a simple mixing operation, during which certain amounts of undissolved salts and other combustible substances, such as metal powder or the like, can also be added . Auxiliary substances in small quantities for controlling the density and consistency of the explosive, such as respectively gas-splitting reagents such as sodium nitrite and cross-linking reagents such as chromates, titanates or antimonates, can, if desired, be added in the same mixing operation.
This mixing operation and the equipment with which it is carried out are also not critical for the practice of the invention, but a certain effect of the mixing intensity can sometimes be felt on such quality measures of the explosive as its critical diameter.
Thus, a prepared solution of oxygen-releasing salts, thickeners and a lignosulfonate can be brought together with the liquid fuel and possibly other components in a plastic bottle and shaken by hand, whereby in less than a minute a sufficiently intimate mixture is obtained, which can be printed of the plastic bottle into suitable sleeves or the like, and then successfully brought to detonation with usual initiators. Of course, the same mixing operation can be carried out in portions with almost every mixing equipment on a larger or smaller scale, whereby mixing times of the order of one or a few minutes will usually be sufficient.
A particularly preferred method of execution for the mixing operation is to allow the aqueous solution of the oxygen-releasing salt(s), thickeners and lignosulfonate to flow continuously together with the liquid fuel, possibly during the simultaneous supply of certain quantities of undissolved salt and solid combustible substances and other auxiliary substances, into a mixing chamber with a mechanical stirring device, from which the finished explosive continuously flows out and is pumped further, either directly into boreholes or to a cartridge machine of a suitable type.
In such a continuous mixing operation, which avoids the accumulation of large quantities of ready-made and detonating explosives, the volume of the mixing chamber can, for example, be as small as 1 to 2 liters for a flow of a finished explosive quantity that has a volume of 20 liters per minute. This means that the mixing operation can be done within an average of 3 to 6 seconds with such an effective emulsification of the liquid fuel in the salt solution that the explosive produced is completely satisfactory for use in boreholes with a diameter of over approx. 50 mm.
In the practice of the invention, it is not critical which! type of lignosulfonates used or in what form these are available. Thus, for example, so-called sulphite de-lutear can be used evaporated to a content of approx. 50% dry matter with the rest "U* all essential water, or substances that have been evaporated to dryness and are available as powders can be used. Lignosulfonates of sodium, calcium, magnesium and ammonium can be used, depending on which bases are used in the sulphite cellulose process. It is also not in any way critical for the practice of the invention whether the lignosulfonate preparation contains various other water-soluble components, such as various sugars released from the raw material of the cellulose production, or whether these sugars have been disposed of by fermentation before evaporation to about 50% or to towards dryness. The lignosulfonates which according to the invention are to be included in the finished explosive mixture are used in amounts of up to 5% of the total mixture, and preferably in amounts of between 0.5 and 2%. To further clarify, the invention the following examples should be given of some embodiments of it, where both the mixing operations are carried out differently ig way, and where some examples, where indicated, have been carried out without lignosulphonates for comparison of the results obtained. ;Examples ;In the table below, the composition of a total of 5 examples is given, of which No. 4 and 5 are outside the invention and are listed for the sake of comparison, provided they do not simultaneously contain lignosulfonate and a liquid fuel. The method of preparation is also varied, but common to all the examples is that a solution, essentially consisting of nitrates and water, is first prepared and kept at one temperature of approx. 45°C until mixing with the other components takes place. This solution also includes the thickening medium guar gum, which is first dispersed in glycol to avoid lumps, further thiourea as a reaction partner for the auxiliary substance nitrite so that a certain amount of nitrogen is developed finely distributed in the finished mixture, as well as the anti-foam agent "Foamaster 50 D", marketed by the company Nopco Senco, to avoid varying entrapment of air in the explosive mixture..Finally, the solution for all examples except No. 4 contains a lignosulfonate, namely the commercial product designated "Totanin MG" from A/S Toten Cellulosefabrikk, Nygard, Norway. The ammonium nitrate used is a technical trade quality available in the form of so-called "prills". The lime nitrate used is also a commercial quality in the form of prills, containing approx. 15% water and approx. 6% ammonium nitrate next to calcium nitrate. A diesel oil is used as fuel. of ordinary trade quality. Comparative example no. 5 contains as fuel finely ground gilsonite, which is a carbon-rich, ash-poor natural asphalt. The auxiliaries sodium dichloronate, for cross-linking the guar gum, and sodium nitrite for nitrogen evolution, are added during the final mixing operation in the form of separate aqueous solutions in 50% and 25% concentration respectively. All figures in the composition table are percentages by weight. In the various design examples, different mixing methods are used. In example 1, the solution, the fuel, dry ammonium nitrate and auxiliaries are brought together in the order mentioned in a plastic bottle with a volume of approx. 2 1 and shaken together for approx. 15 sec. The resulting mixture is then, before complete cross-linking of the guar gum has taken place, transferred into cardboard tubes of different diameters for testing the explosive quality data. In example 2, the mixing is carried out in a mixing machine usually used for bakery purposes, with a mixing bowl of approx. 25 liter volume. After charging the solution, the fuel (diesel oil) was added and stirring started until the mixture looked homogeneous, which was achieved after approx. 1 minute. During somewhat vigorous stirring, dry ammonium nitrate and auxiliaries were then added and stirring was maintained for approx. 1 min. The finished mixture was then processed into cartridges as in example 1. In examples 3, 4 and 5, a continuous mixing process was used, where the components were led into a mixing chamber with a volume of approx. 1 1. the feed rate was approx. 10 kg per min., and samples of the resulting finished mixture were transferred into cardboard sleeves of different diameters to determine the critical diameter. In all cases, the specific weight of the product was approx. 1.15 g/cm 3. The results obtained are shown in Table II. The specified critical diameter for the explosive mixtures is the smallest cartridge diameter where a cartridge with a length 5 times the diameter detonates completely in open air after cooling to 5°C after initiation with a primer. As a primer, for cartridge diameters below 84 mm, 32 g of trinitrotoluene is used, designated "A" in the table, while for large cartridge diameters, 360 g of pentolite (55% pentrite, 45% trinitrotoluene) is used, designated "B" in the table. It will be seen from these results that with diesel oil as fuel, lignosulfonate gives a critical diameter below 70 mm, while a lack of lignosulfonate, all other conditions held unchanged, gives a critical diameter of 100 mm, even with a significantly stronger initiation. Other lignosulphonate preparations have given results almost identical to the results that "Totanin MG" has given. With a solid fuel, gilsonite, a critical diameter above 144 mm is obtained even with lignosulphonate, which was the largest diameter tried. It will also be seen that the rapid mixing by shaking in a plastic bottle gives a somewhat lower critical diameter than a mechanical mixing, while the continuous mixing is equivalent to the mechanical batch-wise mixing. A number of trials were also carried out with emulsifiers other than lignosulfonate. The agents examined were stated by the suppliers to be effective for emulsifying oil in saline water and are listed in Table III. ;With the same mixing conditions as used in examples 1 and 6, and with other components as in example 4, none of the commercial emulsifiers listed here achieved a homogeneity approximately equal to that which the lignosulfonate gave, as it was generally observed that no emulsified oil freely floating on top of the mixture. In no case was a critical diameter below 100 mm observed for these mixtures. ;Finally, it can be stated that an explosive mixture-*., with composition as in ex. 1, 2 and 3 were produced by a continuous mixing method as in ex. 3, but in a larger device with a mixing chamber volume of approx. 8 1, and with a feed rate of 150 kg per my. The discharge from the mixing chamber was pumped through a hose with an internal diameter of 38 mm and a length of 25 m directly into a borehole at an iron ore open pit. The diameters of the boreholes were from 20 to 30 cm. Initiated with 2 pcs. 360 g of pentolite primers in each borehole such salvos have detonated completely and shown very satisfactory blasting results.
