Description
The present invention relates to a device for generating coded signals which, particularly in an underwater environment, allows the transmission of information by means of shock waves.
For military purposes or within the framework of oceanographic tasks, different methods are often used for transmitting the signal in an underwater environment. These include probes, active and passive sonar equipment, underwater telephony with ultra-sound. These methods have common features which in certain cases constitute disadvantages. The signal is relatively long or repetitive, which favors localization of the source, and a long range can only be achieved with heavy and space-consuming equipment.
The use of small explosive charges for the transmission of information to submerged submarines has already been carried out in certain trials when the circumstances (cavitation phenomena at high speed) prevent the use of underwater telephones.
However, the information transferred by means of a charge is clearly very elementary because it is reduced to a single pulse.
A series of distinct charges exploding at specific moments allows the sending of a more complex message, but the total duration of the sending is relatively long because it is necessary to wait with the explosion of a charge for all the secondary phenomena (reflected waves, pseudo-periods, etc.) produced by the previous explosion will be sufficiently weakened. In practice, one is then limited to very simple messages that can be transmitted using two or three successive bursts.
The device according to the invention makes it possible to free oneself from the aforementioned disadvantages in cases where it is a question of transmission over a relatively long distance, either a few tens of kilometers, of a relatively short message, or a few tens of bits.
The device also has the advantage that it is not direction-indicative and does not necessarily make the recipient aware of the direction.
According to the invention, a single charge sends out a succession of impulses in a sufficiently large number so that the message has a current length and sufficiently close to each other that the entire message will be received before the secondary phenomena occur (as these will otherwise be reduced to reflected waves because it is relatively easy to eliminate pulsation of bubbles by preventing diffusion of gas).
The invention thus has the task of providing a device for producing coded signals consisting of shock waves sent out at predetermined moments and which propagate in a liquid medium, particularly under water, and the invention is distinguished by the fact that the device comprises a single explosive chain divided into at least three parts, with at least two of these parts being in contact with the said propagating medium in order to send out in this medium at least two distinct shock waves one after the other, and which are separated by at least another part of the explosive chain which is isolated from the said medium by a substance which absorbs the shock waves emitted by the explosion of the explosive chain, and means to ensure the tightness of the said chain against gas emitted by the explosion which produces the shock waves.
According to the invention, the above-mentioned device excels. furthermore, in that the separations between the shock wave-emitting parts have such dimensions that successively emitted distinct shock waves do not interfere with each other.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is characterized by the aforementioned explosive chain consisting of a detonating cord contained in a tight metal sleeve or sheath which withstands the explosion and is divided over its length into segments contained in at least one capsule which is equipped with material that absorbs the shock waves emitted by the bursting of the aforementioned cord, and in segments in contact with the propagation medium.
The said detonating cord can be completely enclosed in a capsule equipped with absorbent material and can be connected to at least two explosive elements in contact with the said propagating environment so arranged that the emitted shock waves do not interfere with each other.
Finally, the invention relates to a device of the above-mentioned type which is also distinguished by the fact that the said explosive elements are connected to the detonating cord by means of engaging connections, e.g. threads, placed regularly along the cord so that the shock waves emitted by the explosive elements do not interfere with each other.
The coding of the information to be transmitted can be done by the number and distance of the shock waves.
In the absence of a suitable receiver, the phenomenon is perceived as a single explosion. Its short duration works against locating the direction and gives no indication whatsoever that a message has been sent.
3. The invention will be better understood from the description of special embodiments which should not be limiting and with reference to the drawings, where fig. 1 is a schematic section of a first device in accordance with the present invention, where the explosive charge consists of a detonating cord or fuse, fig. 2 is a perspective view of another embodiment where the detonating cord or fuse is arranged in a helical shape, fig. 3 shows a schematic section of another embodiment of a device according to the invention for generating a binary code, and fig. 4 is a purely schematic perspective view of the device in fig. 3.
Fig. 1 shows a device according to the invention where the explosive charge consists of a detonating cord or fuse 1 in a tight metallic sleeve which forms a sequence of waveforms with the same amplitude. A plane at the same distance from the tops of the undulations divides the equipment into two parts, one of which is enclosed in a container 2 equipped with absorbent material and the other remains in contact with water. The transmitted message is then a sequence of identical impulses at equal intervals.
Research has been carried out with detonating fuses with hexogen, which is a common product, but any other explosives can be used.
The absorbent material can be polyurethane foam which is easy to use, or any other cellular material with closed cavities. Filling with swelling materials (glass wool, asbestos wool) gives less good results, but their use is not excluded.
Fig. 2 shows in perspective a practical embodiment example of a device in the case where one tries to limit the length, i.e. the cord or the fuse is then arranged in a helical shape, the exact shape of which must be chosen so that the proportions are optimised.
This embodiment offers a great deal of freedom in the choice of shapes and has the advantage of being relatively reasonably priced. On the other hand, this embodiment limits the possibility of coding because this only consists in the number of transmitted impulses, the maximum number being determined by the construction and can only be reduced by
å skjære over snoren. to cut the cord.
It is possible to reduce the complexity of the coding by arranging absorbent casings which can be placed around one end of the string. A binary code can then be used, but this result is achieved more practically with another embodiment of the invention shown in fig. 3 and 4.
Ifolge fig. According to fig. 3, a detonating fuse 1 is completely enclosed in a tight enclosure 2 filled with absorbent material. Connection points are placed at evenly spaced points on the string, into which either massive plugs such as 3 or explosive charges such as 4 can be screwed in, as plugs and explosive charges are only in contact with the water. The dimensions and nature of the charges are chosen so that their respective detonations do not overlap, taking into account the length of the string separating them.
In this case, the transmitted message is a sequence with equal intervals of impulses or a lack of impulses which makes it possible to implement a binary coding.
Fig. 4 shows in perspective a practical embodiment of the device. In addition to this, large variations of the shape are possible, the string can e.g. be arranged in a spiral or screw shape.
This embodiment makes it possible to transcribe the message to be sent, with a simple piece of equipment, a few minutes before the application.
Regardless of the design, the ignition and safety devices are selected depending on the same criteria as for the known explosive charges.
Furthermore, the greatest range permitted by the propagating environment's ability to retain the shape of the signals will be achieved for explosive charges with weights that vary from sometimes 10 to sometimes 100 g depending on the length of the message, whereby it becomes possible to realize devices that are light and small space-consuming and particularly useful for aircraft.
Regardless of the design, the length of the message is limited by the difficulties that cause a partial overlap of direct waves and reflected waves from the bottom or from the surface to be received.
Depending on the conditions of use, this limit will usually be a few tens of bits and can only be significantly increased by accepting significant complications of the facilities for receiving and processing the signal.
The device according to the invention can be used within the framework of military, scientific and industrial tasks.
From a military point of view, it is mainly about the transmission of a message to a submerged submarine, the sender of the message being a ship on the surface, an underwater vessel, an aircraft or a shore station. The transmitter can also use a launcher or a torpedo to increase the range. In any case, the range and omni-directional nature of the broadcast allows the acceptance of a large inaccuracy in the localization of the receiver or even broadcasting deliberately rather far away from it in order to avoid causing its localization. Otherwise, a short message is a discretionary factor.
From a scientific and industrial point of view, the most important application possibilities seem to occur in the area of remote control of submerged equipment: automatic devices for exploration or measurement, valves in petroleum plants. It will, for example, be possible through the use of a very simple code to achieve remote control of a majority of submerged facilities from a land station or from an aircraft that can be satisfied with a very approximate location.
