Description
Werkwijze voor bet vervaardigen van een laminaat, waarin een afbeelding is opgenomen, alsmede met die werkwijze vervaardigd laminaatMethod for manufacturing a laminate in which an image is included, as well as laminate produced by that method
It is known to manufacture a laminate such that an image is included between a support and a transparent cover film. In general, the so-called transfer method is used for the production of such a known laminate. The image is then applied to an intermediate layer, for example siliconized paper, after which this layer is combined in a rolling station with a carrier layer on which an ink-receiving layer is present, which takes over the image from the intermediate layer. The intermediate layer is discarded and the printed support is brought together with a cover film such that both layers are adhered together and the image is interposed between the support and the cover film.
The object of the invention is to provide a method that does not use a transfer method and can therefore provide a better image quality.
Another object of the invention is to provide a method which is simpler than the known method.
In connection with the above, the invention provides a method of manufacturing a laminate comprising: a support layer, an image, an adhesive layer; and a transparent cover film, through which the image can be observed, the method comprising the following steps to be performed in an appropriate order: (1) providing a transparent cover film to which an adhesive layer is applied, on which adhesive layer is an ink-absorbing layer applied; (2) applying an image to the ink recording layer by means of an inkjet printer, the image being inverted with respect to the carrier layer; (3) providing a support layer, for example consisting of paper, a plastic film or a rigid plate; and (4) bringing the image-bearing cover film together with the support layer such that the support layer is adhered to the adhesive film by means of the adhesive layer, such that the image is located between the support layer and the cover film.
A specific embodiment of the method according to the invention is that which comprises (5) performing step (4) such that the cover foil and the carrier layer are passed together through the nip of a rolling station for operating by pressure and optionally elevated temperature making the adhesive layer.
De hechtlaag kan bijvoorbeeld bestaan uit EVA.The adhesive layer can for instance consist of EVA.
The ink-absorbing layer can for instance consist of PVA.
The invention also relates to a laminate obtained by applying the above-described method according to the invention.
The invention will now be elucidated with reference to the annexed drawing, in which it is noted that the thickness of the various layers are so far apart that the figures cannot represent realistic proportions. Show in the drawing; figure 1 shows a partly broken away perspective view of a basic laminate; figure 2 shows a section along the line II-II through the laminate according to figure 1 on an enlarged scale; Figure 3 shows a rolling device for joining the printed laminate according to Figures 1 and 2 with a carrier; figure 4 shows a view corresponding with figure 1 of the final laminate; and figure 5 shows the cross section along the line V-V of the end laminate according to figure 4.
This laminate 1 comprises a transparent cover foil 2 on the underside, an adhesive layer 3 above it, consisting of EVA, and an ink-absorbing layer 4 above, consisting of PVA. Using a computer-controlled inkjet printer, an image in this case is the word "TEXT" 5 in inverted form, printed as a mirror image on the ink recording layer 4.
Figure 2 shows that the ink from the inkjet printer is included in the ink recording layer.
Attention is drawn to the fact that the use of an inkjet printer control computer offers the possibility of forming an inverted image in a very simple manner.
Figure 3 shows that the printed base laminate 1 is combined by a joining station 6 with a, in this case, cardboard support 7. This support need not be subjected to a pre-treatment but must meet the necessary requirements with regard to flatness, adhesion to the transparent cover foil 2 by means of the adhesive layer 3, insofar as applicable, on its surface to be turned towards the base laminate, have a color contrasting with the image, and the like.
The base laminate 1 and the carrier 7 are fed into the joining station through the nip between two compressed heated rollers 8, 9. Under the influence of the temperature increase and the pressure exerted, the adhesive layer 3 is activated, whereby the said layers are combined into one final laminate 10.
Figures 4 and 5 show this end laminate 10. In the situation shown in Figures 4 and 5, the image 5 can be seen from above by the transparent cover foil 2 by an observer.
Van belang is het, dat de afbeelding 5 geheel beschermd is opgenomen tussen de drager 7 en de transparante dekfolie 2.Attention is drawn to the fact that in Figures 4 and 5 layers 3 and 4 are not drawn separately from each other. It has been found in practice that these layers merge, certainly after processing in the joining station 6, and can no longer be distinguished from each other. It is important that the image 5 is completely protected between the carrier 7 and the transparent cover foil 2.
Tenslotte wordt opgemerkt dat de drager 7 desgewenst ook transparant kan zijn, waardoor het gehele eindprodukt of eind-laminaat 10 transparant is.Finally, it is noted that the support 7 can also be transparent if desired, so that the entire end product or end laminate 10 is transparent.
Finally, it is again pointed out that the figures do not show the thicknesses of the various layers to scale. For example, the carrier 7 may consist of a wooden or plastic plate with a thickness of, for example, 10 to 20 mm, the cover foil 2 may have a thickness of the order of 100 micrometers, while the adhesive layer 3 and the ink-receiving layer may have a thickness, for example. on the order of a few micrometers to a few tens of micrometers.
