Abstract
Description
For example, in production plants where many machines of the same or different type are operating at the same time, the problem may arise that malfunctions of a machine are not noticed in time. As a result, there is a risk that the damage to a machine is greater, and therefore the repair time longer and the cost higher, than in the case where a failure would have been detected at an early stage. In the absence of automatically operating means capable of locating faults, one is usually satisfied with a periodic inspection and intervention takes place only at the moment when a fault becomes manifest. In particular, with this known way of working it cannot be avoided that machines crash especially in noisy environments, which means downtime and loss of productivity.
The object of the invention is to provide a system which is able to automatically monitor a machine and, for example, to alert control personnel via visual presentation and possibly acoustic alarms to the fault with immediate indication of its location.
In connection with this objective, the device provides a system for locating and visualizing faults, the system comprising: a microphone array to be aimed at an at least partly mechanically operating and thereby sound-emitting device, for example a machine; a presentation unit, for example a screen, for displaying that device from at least about the direction of the microphone array, for example by means of a video camera; a central signal processing unit, to which the signals originating from the microphones of the array are supplied, the signal processing unit comprising analysis means for analyzing the microphone signals and their interrelationships, as well as learning means connected to said analysis means, for instance with neuronal networks, such that the signal processing unit can determine after a learning phase within which tolerance limits deviations of the spectra, levels and phases of the microphone signals are permissible, and at what angle the microphone array detects any deviations; and projection means for projecting a visual warning signal into the region of the detected deviation on the image by the display unit.
The invention will now be elucidated with reference to a figure. This shows a machine 1 which contains a number of moving parts and therefore emits sound, which carries information regarding the operation of the machine. In particular, the frequency of certain frequency components can be important information. Other parameters are also important for the analysis of sound with a view to detecting disturbances. In general, these include the sound spectra, the relative levels at different frequencies or in different frequency bands and phase relationships.
A video camera 2 is oriented on the machine 1, which gives an image 4 of the machine 1 on a video monitor 3. A microphone array 5 is arranged next to the video camera 2. This array 5 comprises a matrix-shaped structure with rows and columns of microphones 6 with mutually known positions.
All signals from the microphones 6 are supplied via lines 7 to a central signal processing unit 8, which comprises analysis means for analyzing the microphone signals and their interrelationships, as well as learning means connected to said analysis means, for example memory-like structures with neuronal networks. On the basis of this structure, the central signal processing unit 8 is able, after a learning phase, to determine within which tolerance limits deviations from the said parameters, such as spectra, levels and phases of the microphone signals, are permissible. It is further known that microphone arrays of the aforementioned and applied type are capable of determining, by analyzing the phases of specific frequency components, under which azimuth and elevation the relevant frequency component reaches array 5. The arrangement shown in the figure thus enables the array, after signal processing by the central signal processing unit 5, to determine under which angle the microphone array 5 detects any deviations in the sound emitted by the machine 1. The signal processing unit 6 further comprises a signal generator which can generate a video signal based on this angle signal. The video signal is applied to the video monitor 3 and there, for example, on the image 4 of the machine 1, gives a red colored, flashing ring 9 around the zone 10, in which the microphone array has detected the disturbance. The video signal can also be used to energize an audio signal generator 11, which gives an alarm signal to a schematically illustrated loudspeaker 12, so that personnel are alerted to the signaled disturbance, without continuously keeping an eye on the monitor 30.
Attention is drawn to the fact that other embodiments of the system according to the invention also fall within the scope of this invention.
For example, a one-dimensional microphone array, which extends transversely to detection zones within which disturbances can be located, will suffice under certain conditions.
Verder is het niet noodzakelijk gebruik te maken van een video-camera en een video-monitor, maar kan bijvoorbeeld ook worden volstaan met een afbeelding van de betreffende machine, en andere visuele presentatiemiddelen, zoals een aantal in deze afbeelding aanwezige LEDs.Furthermore, it is not necessary to use a video camera and a video monitor, but an image of the machine in question and other visual presentation means, such as a number of LEDs present in this image, may suffice, for example.
