Abstract
Description
INDICATORINKTINDICATOR INK
The invention relates to an indicator ink for use in a method of controlling sterilization.
Sterilization processes, and in particular steam sterilization processes, are used for a variety of purposes such as, for example, in hospitals or food preservation. In such processes it is of the utmost importance to check that the sterilization has been carried out correctly and completely. For example, chemical indicators are used for this purpose. The known chemical indicators are generally based on the known polluting and highly toxic lead (Pb). According to European environmental legislation, the use of lead will be prohibited after the year 2000. In addition, lead corrods on sterilizers and materials to be sterilized, which generally contain a lot of copper.
In addition, currently available chemical indicators for sterilization processes often have performance problems. Color changes are incomplete or do not meet sensitivity requirements. In that case, adequate registration of the process or the change in the process is not possible.
The known available indicators are often subject to unstable color change, so that the color change cannot serve as an appropriate means in quality control of sterilization processes. In addition, the known available chemical indicators also show great variation in their performance. Lack of reproducibility makes these products less suitable for quality control of sterilization processes.
The object of the present invention is to provide an indicator for use in a method of controlling sterilization, which avoids the above drawbacks.
This is achieved by an indicator ink comprising carrier ink and a mixture dispersed therein with a predetermined ratio of sulfur and an organic divalent metal ion salt. The divalent metal ion is preferably copper. The organic salt can be selected from the group consisting of oxalate, carbonate and acetate. Most preferred is oxalate.
The condensation of steam generates a certain amount of energy. The blue-green colored copper oxalate of the indicator ink according to the invention is converted into green-black copper sulphide in the presence of sulfur, whereby carbon dioxide is released. The amount of energy released during the condensation of steam exceeds the activation energy of this reaction, so that upon successful sterilization a color change from blue-green to green-black will be observed.
Preferably, a water-soluble dye is also added to the mixture of sulfur and the organic salt of a divalent metal ion. Although the water-soluble dye does not itself participate in the reaction, it does provide a more marked color change of the indicator ink.
The water-soluble dye can be any suitable dye, but is preferably selected from the group consisting of Ecoline ™ redviolet, Ecoline ™ carmine and Ecoline ™ sky-blue. Most preferred is the colorant Ecoline ™ redviolet.
The ratio of sulfur to the organic salt of the divalent metal ion is between 0.1: 1 and 1: 0.1.
Bij voorkeur is de verhouding ongeveer 1:1.Preferably, the ratio is about 1: 1.
The indicator ink according to the invention is prepared by: a) thoroughly mixing the desired amounts of sulfur and an organic salt of a divalent metal ion; b) adding a carrier ink; c) dispersing the mixture formed in step a) through the carrier ink by suitable methods. Optionally, after step a), a water-soluble dye is added to the resulting mixture and then thoroughly mixed. Preferably, the indicator ink is prepared by: a) mixing substantially equal amounts of copper oxalate and sulfur; b) adding a latex-based flexaprint ink; and c) adding glass beads and dispersing the copper oxalate / sulfur mixture through the flexaprint ink for about 12 hours by shaking. Preferably, after step b, the water-soluble dye is added to the copper oxalate / sulfur / flexaprint ink mixture.
The indicator ink according to the invention can be used for printing carrier materials, such as, for example, paper strips or test sheets. The strips or test sheets provided with the indicator ink can for instance be applied to or in the packaging of an object to be sterilized. There are already steam sterilization control packages on the market with which sterilization can be checked. A carrier with the indicator ink according to the invention thereon can also form part of such a package.
The application of the indicator ink to the carrier material preferably takes place by means of screen printing techniques. However, other application methods can also be used.
The invention will be further elucidated by means of the following example.
VOORBEELDEXAMPLE
Bereiding van een indicatorinkt volgens de uitvinding.Preparation of an indicator ink according to the invention.
a. Bereiding van koperoxalaata. Preparation of copper oxalate
Sodium oxalate was dissolved in distilled water. The compound was added until the solution was saturated. A copper sulfate solution was prepared in the same manner. The two saturated solutions were then mixed to precipitate copper oxalate. The precipitate formed was filtered and washed with distilled water, filtered and washed again until a final pH> 4.5 was reached. Only when this pH is reached can it be ensured that substantially all the sodium sulfate present has been removed from the precipitate. The precipitate was dried and pulverized and was then suitable for use.
b. Preparation of the ink 250 g of copper oxalate and 250 g of sulfur were mixed. Then, 375 ml latex-based flexaprint ink was added. Then 60 ml of the water-soluble dye Ecoline ™ redviolet was added. For the dispersion, a volume of 300 to 400 ml of glass beads was added to the mixture and then shaken continuously for more than 12 hours. The dispersed solution was decanted while the glass beads were sieved out.
c. Het testen van de inktc. Testing the ink
The ink was applied to medical paper, after which the whole was subjected to steam sterilization. The sterilization temperature was 134 ° C or 121 ° C. After sterilization, a color change was found to have taken place from rose-violet to dark brown. The color change observed was very significant.
The above example is only an illustration of an indicator ink according to the invention. It is of course possible to use other combinations of organic salts, metal ions and water-soluble dyes in different proportions. It is important that the ink undergoes a significant color change by sterilization.
