Abstract
Description
KUNSTSTOFGRANULAAT WET NIET-GEDISPERGEERDE ELECTRISCHGELEIDENDE VEZELBUNDELSPLASTIC GRANULES LAW NON-DISPENSED ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE FIBER BUNDLES
The invention relates to a plastic granulate in which electrically conductive fibers are present.
Such a plastic granulate is known from GB-A-2112796, which describes a plastic granulate in which electrically conductive steel fibers are included, the fibers possibly being distributed in the granulate granules. The granulate is obtained by choosing a shear stress during mixing of the fibers and the base granulate such that the shear stress is high enough to obtain a good dispersion of the steel fibers in the plastic granulate, while preventing breakage of the steel fibers. This happens at relatively high temperatures.
The drawback of a plastic granulate as described in GB-A-2112796 is that segregation occurs during its manufacture due to the high temperature during mixing. This leads to clogging of the extrusion equipment with which the intended granulates are manufactured.
The object of the invention is now to provide a plastic granulate, in which electrically conductive fibers are incorporated, which can be manufactured without the aforementioned drawback and in which a molding compound obtained from this has an improved shielding behavior.
The plastic granulate according to the invention is characterized in that it consists of granulate granules containing 0.3-4% by volume of electrically conductive fiber bundles, the dispersion degree of which is a maximum of 0.10, the dispersion degree being the reciprocal value of the volume fraction in% of a granulate grain, measured via the threshold value method, which is occupied by electrically conductive fiber bundles, wherein an electrically conductive fiber bundle comprises 60-20,000 fibers.
It has been found that blockages in the extruder are prevented with a plastic granulate according to the invention.
Despite the low degree of dispersion, i.e. a poor distribution of fibers in a granulate granule, the plastic granules are found to be eminently suitable, for example, for injection molding to form molding compositions with excellent shielding behavior. This is very surprising because in the previous publication it was stated that in order to obtain a good shielding behavior against electromagnetic interference (EMI) in a molding compound, the fibers must be very well dispersed in the plastic granulate.
It has also been found that the low degree of dispersion of fiber bundles in the plastic leads to less fiber breakage. This is the result of the fiber bundles present instead of fibers. A fiber bundle breaks less quickly, so that breakage is suppressed. As a result, a lower loading of the fibers can be satisfied.
Preferably, the granulate granules of the invention have a degree of dispersion less than 0.08. The degree of dispersion is defined as the reciprocal of the volume fraction (Vv) in percent of a granulate grain taken in by steel fiber bundles, measured by the threshold value method. The method threshold consists of determining Vv using digital image processing and image analysis. To obtain a reliable indication of Vv, the granulate granules are pressed into a plate.
Hetprincipe van deze methode staat vermeld in A. Rosenfeld, A.C. Kak,"Digital Picture Processing", vol. 2, 1980.Using digital image processing, an image of a plane cross-section of a press plate, via a video camera and a digital converter, is converted into a matrix with a large number of points. Each point is given a discrete value corresponding to the light intensity in the output image; for example, black becomes 0, white becomes 255, and intermediate intensities are distributed proportionally. The principle of this method is set forth in A. Rosenfeld, A.C. Kak, "Digital Picture Processing", vol. 1 and 2 (1982). By choosing a threshold value in the discretized intensities, the steel fiber bundles can be distinguished from the plastic matrix and the surface fraction (A ^) measured by the steel fiber bundles in the cross section can be measured. It can be deduced from geometric-statistical observations that regardless of the shape or size of the structures, the surface fraction (A / \) is on average equal to the volume fraction (Vv) sought. This is described in E.R. Weibel, "Stereological Methods", vol. 2, 1980.
The selected threshold value is determined by the amount of fibers present per mm 2 of surface. The threshold value to be selected must be chosen such that the cross-sectional area of intersected fibers is at least 5% of the total surface area, preferably at least 10%. The number of fibers can vary from 500-25,000 fibers per mr cross-section, with a fiber diameter of 2-15 μ. If the amount of fibers per mm diameter is less than 500, the light intensity difference in the starting image with areas in which fibers are hardly present, if at all, will be too small to make a good distinction.
As an electrically conductive fiber bundle in the plastic granulate according to the invention, a steel fiber bundle is preferably used, which comprises 60-20,000 fibers, preferably 2000-15,000, the discrete fiber length, which can vary for each fiber, for example 4-8 mm.
Dergelijke bundels zijn bekend als "grains".The fibers in a fiber bundle are preferably impregnated with a resin. The manufacture of such fiber bundles is disclosed in, for example, US-A-2,050,298, US-A-3,042,570, US-A-2,877,501 and US-A-2,877,501. Such bundles are known as "grains".
Generally, the plastic in the granulate of the invention is a thermoplastic polymer composition. These include polyolefins, especially polypropylene and polyethylene; copolymers, in particular styrene acrylonitrile and styrene maleic anhydride copolymers; nylon; polyphenylene oxides; polyphenylene oxide polystyrene mixtures; polyphenylene sulfides; polyether languages, polysulfones; polycarbonates; polyurethanes; cellulose esters; amorphene / or crystalline polyesters, for example, polyethylene terephthalate, polyoxybenzoyl polyesters; polymonochlorostyrene; acrylic polymers; polyvinyl chlorides; polyvinylidene chlorides; copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride; various thermoplastic elastomers, for example based on styrene and butadiene or ethylene or propylene mixtures of said plastics.
The invention also includes the method by which the plastic granulates according to the invention are obtained. The method is characterized in that the electrically conductive fiber bundles mix the plastic granulates at a low shear stress, keeping the temperature below the melting temperature of the plastic during mixing.
The method according to the invention is preferably mixed with the plastic grains. A granulate grain is obtained in which steel fiber bundles have little or no dispersion, i.e. where the degree of dispersion is less than 0.10, measured by the threshold value method. It is a requirement that the temperature during mixing is below the melting temperature <Tsm), but must be above the softening temperature (Tv) of the thermoplastic polymer. This is especially true for the part of the mixer where fiber bundles or grains are added to the plastic.
De dispersiegraad van deze granulaatkorrelsis aanzienlijk hoger dan 0,10.GB-A-215Q936 describes a method in which plastic and steel fiber bundles are mixed together at a low shear stress but at high temperatures. The granulate granules thus obtained show a uniform dispersion of steel fibers in the thermoplastic matrix. The degree of dispersion of these granulate granules is considerably higher than 0.10.
Conventional mixers are suitable as a mixing device. Preferably a single or double screw extruder is used, optionally provided with a nuclear progressive screw, or a kneader without a direct pressure building.
Preferably, use is made of a single screw extruder with a core progressive screw, or a kneader without direct pressure build-up.
Molding compositions made in whole or in part from the plastic granulate according to the invention have excellent properties with regard to electromagnetic interference.
As a result, the plastic granulate according to the invention is eminently suitable for being converted into computer housings and the like.
The molding compositions can be obtained from the granulate granules with known processing techniques, for example injection molding. During injection molding, the bundles will decompose instal fibers which disperse uniformly in the plastic matrix. Since no refraction of the fiber bundles has occurred during the manufacture of the granulate granules, caused by the low shear stress and the poor dispersion, a maximum shielding value is obtained in a final molding compound.
The usual additives can be added to the plastic granulates according to the invention, for example stabilizers, pigments, lubricants and organic and / or inorganic fillers or reinforcing agents.

The following temperatures were set on the extruder, where Τ '] is the temperature at the inlet of the extruder, Tj is the temperature just before the degassing port and T4 is the temperature at the head of the extruder (TV ABS: ~ 95 ° C).
De laatstenvertoonden een hoge dispersie van vezels zoals beschreven inGB-A-2112796.Using Granulate granules from a Schreeder granulator were obtained from the extruder. Visually, the granulate granules of Examples I and II are distinguished from the granules of Examples A and B by the presence of tufts of steel fiber bundles which are not present in the granules obtained by the method A and B. The latter showed a high dispersion of fibers as described in GB-A-2112796.
Test plates (10 x 5 x 0.2 cm 2) were pressed from a part of the resulting granules in a similar condition.
De vergrotingsfactor voorbeide foto's bedroeg 6x.Figures 1 and 2 include two photographs of a portion of the surface of the test plates obtained with the grain of Comparative Example A and Example II. The magnification factor for pre-photos was 6x.
Uit een verkregen testplaatje werden 5 dwarsdoorsneden gesne¬den (5 x 0,2 cm^) en met behulp van digitale beeldverwerking geanaly¬seerd.5 cross-sections (5 x 0.2 cm ^) were cut from a obtained test plate and analyzed using digital image processing.
In the image, the light intensity at the location where steel fiber bundles are present is much lower than at a location where steel fiber is dispersed.
Van de vijf gevonden waarden per testplaatjewerd de gemiddelde oppervlaktefractie (A/\ = Vv) bepaald (zie tabel2).A threshold value of 80 was set for the measurement of the surface fraction of fiber bundles. This meant that all surface units with a value <80 can be counted; defraction (A ^) was determined from this. The average surface fraction (A / \ = Vv) of the five values found per test plate was determined (see Table 2).
De resultaten staan vermeld in tabel 2.Granules obtained by the methods mentioned in table 1 were processed into threshold plates (end product) on an Arburg injection molding machine. The shielding value (EMI) of the threshold plates obtained was determined using the Bekiscan R-CP method (Bekaert S.A., Belgium). The results are shown in Table 2.
Tabel 2Table 2
The examples show that granulate grains in which picking steel fiber bundles are present (i.e., little or no dispersion) in a final molding compound lead to improved shielding value conductivity.
