Eenheid voor zelfuitklappende vleugel.Unit for self-folding wing.
The invention relates to missiles and guided missiles and in particular to folding wing constructions for such projectiles.
Many missiles and projectiles use the 5's some form of wing or stabilizing construction to stabilize the projectile in flight. Guided missiles are often stored in and launched from launch tubes, often from aircraft or other projectiles. Under these conditions it is often necessary to minimize the space required for the projectile until the projectile is launched. Foldable wings of various shapes and forms have been used in the past to minimize the space required for these projectiles.
The scarce space requires that the foldable or collapsible wing constructions are foldable or collapsible to a minimum of space. In addition, the flight characteristics of the projectile demand optimal reliability and operation of the unfolded wing construction. It is therefore desirable that the collapsible wing construction has very good flight properties and at the same time is collapsible to a minimum space.
A cavity or wing housing must be disposed within the projectile body to receive the folded wing, which housing must open onto the outer surface of the projectile body in order to deploy the wing. A reliable seal must be provided in front of this opening, which prevents too great a drag resistance, which efficiently locks the wing construction and allows the wing to be released without disturbances.
It is therefore the main object of the invention to provide an improved wing support construction for collapsible wings.

In FIG. 1, a guided missile or missile is shown having a substantially cylindrical body 10 with nose cone 12 and a plurality of radially outwardly projecting wings 14 projecting from a number of circumferentially spaced longitudinal slots 16 in body 10. A number of guide or control fins or rudders 18 project radially outward from the tail end of the projectile body.
The projectile may have any suitable form of guidance and propulsion system and any required form of warhead. The projectile can be launched in any suitable manner, for example from points or vehicles on the ground, from an aircraft or from other projectiles. However, the space saving according to the invention has been primarily developed for use with projectiles transported by other projectiles, in which space is scarce and reliability is very important.
The wings can have any suitable shape, with a substantially triangular shape shown. The wing fabric cover 66 consists of a flexible or foldable material such as a lightweight nylon or dacron and is cut and sewn so that the fabric 10 is accurately shaped as the support brace unit in its deployed position.
The wing unit is a self-contained unit and a fully operational modular unit, which can be releasably mounted in the missile body such that the wing 15 can be deployed or retracted through a slot in the missile body. The wing unit includes a channel-shaped housing 20 with an elongated slot 22 that extends the length of the housing and forms a chamber or cavity in which the wing is folded. The housing 20 has an outer shape 20f curvature substantially conforming to the shape of the surface of the projectile and has members, which are described in more detail below, including a disposable lid 26 for covering the opening with the wing retracted. The housing body 20 has a base plate 24 as best seen in FIGS. 7-9. The base plate 24 is detachable from the housing 20 and serves as the primary mounting structure. the wing bracing. The plate 24 also serves to clamp the wing cover fabric between the base plate and the housing.
The housing has a depth and width such that the collapsed wing bracing unit can be received and contained therein, as well as the dust cover thereof, and has a detachable cover 26 as shown in Figs. 7 and 8 for covering the wing space with the wing retracted. The wing housing is mounted near an opening 35 in the projectile skin.
The wing fabric support bracing unit is best seen in Figure 4 and has a front support which is rotatable or.
Deze veer staat bij voorkeur in zijn buitenste stand onder voldoende druk om de schoor onder normale omstandigheden in zijn uitgebrachte stand te houden.* hinged is mounted on a front hinge bracket 1 8203531 mounted on the front end of the base plate 24, and a rear bracket rotatably mounted on a rear hinge bracket 30 attached to the base plate 24. The front bracket includes a bottom and outer tubular strut element 32 which is rotatably or pivotally attached to the support 28 and in which a telescopic one. inner or upper tubular strut element 34 is included which is pivotally mounted to the outer end of the rear strut with a hinge pin 36. A compression spring 38 is mounted in the bore of both the bottom and top tubular members 32 and 10, respectively. 34 and extends over almost its entire length. This spring is preferably in its outer position under sufficient pressure to maintain the strut in its released position under normal conditions.
The rear strut is substantially identical to the front strut and has a lower tubular strut element 40 hinged to the hinge bracket 30 telescopically incorporating an inner or upper tubular strut element 42. A compression spring 44 is received in the bore of the tubular members and extends for almost its entire length and is also in its outer position under sufficient pressure to maintain the strut in the deployed position.
The outer end of the inner strut element 34 has a forked hinge bracket 46 in which a hinge element 48 of the inner strut element 42 is included.
Each strut is provided with a protrusion or anti-collapse latch (not shown) to prevent the wing loading from compressing the strut. These latches 30 are shaped like fingers by cutting a narrow U-shaped slot in the wall of the top bracing member.
The finger is bent outward and points with its free end towards the open end of the upper strut 34 or 42 such that, when biased outward, this finger touches the outer end of the outer strut element 32 or 40.
- 5 - lijnige of ingeklapte stand, staan. At least one of the struts is equipped with an anti-rotation latch to prevent accidental rotation of the outer strut elements when the struts are in the 8203531 »............... - 5-line or folded position, stand. As shown in Figs. 4 and 6, anti-rotation latches are provided, each consisting of pins 54 and 56 protruding from the upper strut element at a point allowing them to engage 5 slots 58 and 60 at the outer end of the lower strut elements 32 and 40 when the strut unit folds completely into the rectilinear position as shown in fig. 6. Although two latches are shown, one for each strut, in most cases a single latch appears to be sufficient for the purpose.
It can be seen from Figure 4 that a leaf spring 62 is mounted or mounted on the base plate 24 directly below the bracing unit, which spring is adapted to abut against the bracing unit below the hinge pin 36 and to exert a force thereon, folding the braces to the folded position according to fig. 6. This spring 62 provides an initial outwardly directed force on the struts preventing them from snagging in the collapsed position.
7 en 8.The wing fabric cover 66 discussed above is shaped to surround the strut construction and has a lower or skirt portion 67 attached to the wing housing 20 by clamping between the base plate 24 and the housing, circumferentially clamping Plates 64 are arranged as can be seen from fig. 7 and 8.
These ensure a firm attachment of the wing fabric to the wing housing.
The described wing construction can be collapsed to the folded position and the fabric cover rolled up within the wing housing as shown in Fig. 7. This is done by compressing the strut latches and applying a force to the tip of the wing in a direction that causes both struts to telescope, The struts gradually shorten and pivot about the bottom hinge pins until they are fully in a folded or collapsed position, in which they are aligned with the base plate 24 as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. At this point, the compression springs 38 and 44 within the two braces are fully compressed, almost entirely 8203531 V ψ - 6 -% pressed in length, in which position they give their maximum force. However, when the struts are in this position, the spring force is aligned in one direction or coaxial with it so that the wing is not opened thereby. Before starting to unfold the wing, it is necessary to prestress or press the strut from this position. This is achieved by means of the leaf spring 62, which exerts a force whereby the struts are pressed out over a short distance, such that the compression springs within the struts then quickly cause the wing to fold out to its fully deployed position. The spring 62 is positioned and shaped, as shown in FIG. 4, that when the struts are in the fully collapsed position of FIG. 6, the spring is loaded such that it provides an initial force 15 to deploy the struts and wings. unit.
A detachable cover extends over and covers the opening above the folded wing construction, as best seen in Figures 2, 6 and 7. This wing cover 26 20 consists of an elongated, substantially rectangular plate, which covers the housing opening when the wing is folded therein. The wing cover 26, as shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, has a number of hinge lips 68 on and protruding from one side of the cover and a number of locking lips 70 projecting from the other side of the cover. The hinge lips 68 fit under hinge pins 72. The hinge lips 70 protrude from below and are in contact with locking fingers 80 on the locking plate 76. The top surface of the lid, as seen in Fig. 7, is bent in substantially the form of the projectile housing, to provide minimal resistance to airflow and to prevent space-consuming protrusions.
..... . .As best seen in Figure 3, a plurality of hinge pins 72 are mounted in a number of slots or depressions 74 along one side of the wing housing and mesh with the hinge tabs 68. A sliding locking plate 76 of Figures 5 and 10 is attached by means of a number of slots 78 and collar screws 79 on the opposite side wall of the housing with a number of locking fingers 80, 8203531 - ·---- -: - · -'- · '·. ...... .
De vleugel is dan vrij naar buiten te snappen naar zijn geheel uitgebrachte stand.• Ν ψ Ί - 7 - which are biased to a latch position in which they overlap some of the lip receiving slots 82 and the side wall of the housing. The locking plate is biased to the locking position with the fingers 80 locking tabs 70 overlapping pin and in contact therewith, by means of a compression spring 84 at one end of the plate and the housing. A plunger 86 in a cylinder 87 abuts the end of the latch plate and includes a small explosive charge 88 in a chamber which is fired to shift the latch plate to the release position to release the lid 26. This sliding the locking plate allows the wing unit to be brought out, whereby the cover swings outward about the hinge pins 72 and is released from its hinge position and entrained by the airflow past the projectile body. The wing is then free to snap out to its fully released position.
