The invention relates to a process for making shaped articles by curing a curable composition based on an unsaturated polyester, which is dissolved in at least two copolymerizable monomers before curing.
It is known to use styrene as a copolymerizable monomer in unsaturated polyester resins. Disadvantages associated with the use of styrene are the emission of the relatively volatile styrene during storage and processing of the resins and the strong smoke development that occurs when the styrene-cured materials are burnt. It is therefore desirable to replace styrene as a monomer with a monomer or mixture of monomers with a lower vapor pressure, which moreover cause less smoke development when the cured product is burned. Suitable monomers appear to be vinyl esters or esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid with a sufficiently low vapor pressure. However, it has been found by the Applicant that when unsaturated polyesters containing one of these types of monomers are cured in the usual manner, the mechanical properties of the materials obtained are poor. In particular, the stiffness, the flexural strength as well as the impact strength of the materials are insufficient. The applicability of such materials is therefore very limited.
The object of the invention is to replace styrene in unsaturated polyester curable compositions with a monomer or monomer mixture which is copolymerizable with the polyester to an article of sufficient mechanical strength.
According to the invention, molded articles are made by curing an unsaturated polyester dissolved in polyester copolymerizable monomers, wherein the composition to be cured, in addition to any conventional additives, is 30-80% by weight of an unsaturated polyester and 70-20 % by weight of a monomer mixture from 8 0 06 25 5 2 1) 10-90% by weight of one or more mono- or diesters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, and 2) 90-10% by weight of one or more vinyl esters of a 3-20 C atoms containing aliphatic or aromatic mono- or polycarboxylic acid.
It has been found that a synergistic effect occurs by using the mixture of said monomers. By curing these compositions, material with high rigidity and strength and high impact strength can be obtained. The material can be used, among other things, for making plates and profiles, boats, parts of coach bodies, equipment housings, etc.
The composition to be cured consists of 30 to 80% by weight unsaturated polyester and 70 to 20% by weight of the monomer mixture. Preferably 30 to 60% by weight of the monomer mixture is used. In addition to the vinyl ester (s) and the (meth) acrylic acid ester (s), minor amounts of less than 10% by weight and more preferably less than 5% by weight of other copolymerizable monomers can also be used. Examples of such monomers are styrene, di-vinylbenzene, triallyl cyanurate, diallyl phthalate, dialkyl fumarates, N-20 vinyl lactams and vinyl ethers.
As vinyl esters, esters derived from an aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid containing 3-20 C atoms are used. Preferred are esters which have a boiling point of at least 150 ° C at 1 bar. Examples of suitable vinyl esters are vinyl laurate, vinyl benzoate, vinyl chloroacetate, vinyl pivalate, vinyl propionate, and in particular the vinyl esters of α-branched synthetic carboxylic acids such as vinyl versatate. Vinyl esters of polyvalent carboxylic acids can also be used, such as divinyl oxalate, divinyl adipate or divinyl fumarate, or unsaturated semesters such as vinyl ethyl adipate. A monovinyl ester is preferably used.
The esters of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid can be derived from aliphatic, arylaliphatic, or cycloaliphatic monoalcohols or dialol alcohols of 1-20 carbon atoms. Optionally, a minor amount of a triacrylate ester or trimethacrylate ester may be present. Examples of suitable esters are methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, lauryl acrylate, hydroxypropyl acrylate, trimethylol propane diacrylate, methyl methacrylate, hydroxypropyl methacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. Very good results are achieved in particular when using a mixture of 50-80% by weight acrylic acid and / or methacrylic acid esters of an aliphatic monoalcohol with 1-3 carbon atoms and 50-20% by weight acrylic acid and / or methacrylic acid diester of a aliphatic diol with 2-6 carbon atoms. An example of such a combination is a mixture of methyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate.
The vinyl esters are preferably used in an amount of 25-75% by weight based on the monomer mixture and the 10 (meth) acrylate esters in an amount of 75-25% by weight.
The unsaturated polyester is the usual condensation product of at least one ot- (3-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and optionally one or more aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acids with an aliphatic diol, optionally mixed with a minor amount of a compound containing three or more hydroxyl compounds. of the unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, fumaric acid and maleic acid, and of the non-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, adipic acid, sebacic acid, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, tetrahydrophthalic acid, and phthalic acid Examples of hydroxyl compounds are ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,6-hexanediol, 4,4'-neopent isopropylidenebiscyclohexanol and trimethylolpropane.Halogenated compounds, such as tetrabromophthalic acid, may also be included. The solubility of the polyester in the monomer mixture according to the invention seems to be improved by using as a reaction component of a small amount of a low vapor pressure monofunctional alcohol, for example, benzyl alcohol, octanol-2, decanol, 2-ethylhexanol, tetradecanol, cyclohexanol, or the diallyl ether of trimethylol propane. Optionally, a monofunctional carboxylic acid, such as benzoic acid, oleic acid, stearic acid or 2-ethylhexanoic acid, can also be used in a small amount. The degree of unsaturation of the polyester is preferably between 200 and 600 milliequivalents of unsaturation per 100 g of polyester. The acidity can be between 0 and 150 meq COOH / 100 g polyester, and preferably between 5 and 75 meq.

The composition to be cured may contain further customary additives such as fillers, reinforcing agents, in particular glass fiber, pigments, thickeners, stabilizers, antioxidants, anti-shrinkage additives, flame retardant additives, catalysts and accelerators etc.
For the curing of the mixture of unsaturated polyester and monomers according to the invention, use can be made of the usual curing systems, consisting of an organic peroxide, an accelerator and optionally a promoter. For curing at room temperature, use can be made of the combination of a ketone peroxide, a vanadium compound as accelerator and a β-diketo compound as promoter, as described in Netherlands Patent Application 79,08410, which has not yet been laid open to public inspection.
