Abstract

Underwater pipeline is prefabricated to a selected length and then transported to its location and sunk to the seabed. During the transport, the pipeline section is suspended from a submerged carrying pipe with adjustable ballast so that the depth of the assembly can be adjusted to be without the range of influence of surface waves. Once at the location, the pipe and carrying pipe is lowered to the seabed by increasing the ballast of the carrying assembly after which, the latter is removed. The final positioning of the pipeline section takes place by allowing the pipeline to just touch the seabed until the correct position has been attained and then allowing its full weight to rest on the bottom. The length of the transporting pipe is equal to or greater than the length of the pipeline section. The transport depth can be gauged by means of depth gauges attached to the carrier pipe and protruding above the water surface. The assembly is preferably towed by means of a submarine or a towboat linked to the carrier pipe via cable and an intermediate sinker whose weight counterbalance the upward force of the two cable so that the carrier is only subjected to a horizontal force. Transport system enables large pipe sections to be prefabricated in shallow, calm waters and then transported to location eliminating much of the deep water fabrication work. The submerged carrier prevents the pipeline section from being damaged by surface wave conditions during transit.
