Abstract

The mechanism is intended for placing alternate groups of objects, such as apples, in a container (R) in which a number of layers is formed. Supply means (A, B) gather a predetermined number of objects into a pattern and this number is then transferred to the container to form one layer. The transfer means comprise a guide rail (75, 78, 76) for two horizontally movable trolleys each carrying a pick-up head (10A, 10B) for one layer. The action is repeated to form a number of layers. The rail has three vertically movable trolley support sections (75, 75', 78) and two fixed sections (76). The trolleys simultaneously move on to two of the movable sections and then move down with these sections. The supply means are provided with units (51) which compress a group of objects laterally to form the desired pattern of one layer, the action of these units being synchronised with the lateral trolley movement.
