Abstract

The underwater dredger digger wheel has the pump mounted very close to suction intake, giving max. pressure difference between them. The force of gravity on the material acts in the same direction as the suction current, this being effected by buckets on the wheel extended by guards, extending as far as the suction pipe and open at the bottom. The material does not start to be sucked in simultaneously with excavation, but only when the bucket guard is at from 35 to 50 deg. above the horizontal, and the wheel roates in a plane at right angles to the dredger ladder centre line. The pump suction pipe has no bends, being taken through the wheel drive shaft and the hollow reduction gear output shaft, Qand the entire unit is accommodated on a prefab. mounting. A parallelogram linkage holds the wheel in the desired position for all dredging depths, and the entire unit hinges on the ladder. Within limits, the wheel can be brought into any desired position and held there for all depths.
