Abstract

A thermoplastics sheet is protected by application of a paper-polyethylene laminate, in which the surface of the polyethylene has been subjected to a corona discharge treatment. The laminate is applied to the surface of the sheet by heat and pressure or by pressure alone, so that the polyethylene adheres to the surface of the sheet. The protective film adheres well to the thermoplastics sheet substrate without the use of adhesives. good protection of the sheet is provided and the protective film is easily removed to leave the sheet in a condition ready for subsequent use, e.g. in vacuum forming. In an example, a paper-polyethylene laminate with 20 mu layer of polyethylene, was subjected to a corona discharge and applied to PMMA sheet using a rubber roler at 105 degrees C. The protective layer adhered well the sheet and was easily removed when the sheet was required for use.
