Abstract

Pigmented thermosetting unsaturated polyester moulding materials are made contg. (a) >=25 wt. % unsaturated polyester resin, (b) 5-25 wt. % preformed particulate lightly cross-linked polymer particles with an average particle size of nearly equal 15-100 (esp. 20-50) mu consisting of a linear polymer cross linked with a small amt. of a polyfunctional monomer, with a cross link density of nearly equal 0.005-2, esp. 0.01-1.0 equiv cross linking sites per kg. polymer; and (c) nearly equals 30-70 wt.% of an alkylenically unsaturated monomer which cross links with the resin (a) to form a thermosetting matrix to bind the preformed polymer (b). Prods. have low moulding shrinkage (low profile) properties, and in contrast to prior low profile systems, have improved pigmentation properties, giving high tolerance mouldings with uniform pigmentation, free from streaking and mottling.
