Abstract
Electric accumulators comprise >=1 cells in which (a) the negative electrode consists (when charged) of Fe, Cd, Mg, In or Zn; (b) the positive electrode consists when charged) of PbO2 or another sparingly soluble Pb(IV) cpd. formed from PbO2 and the anion in the electrolyte; and (c) the electrolyte consists of an aq. soln. of an alkali metal hydroxide (MOH) and a salt. The MOH concn. is sufficient to maintain an alkaline reaction throughout the electrochemical cycle, and the anion of the salt in the electrolyte forms a sparingly soluble cpd. with the positive electrode material, at least when the latter is discharged. The accumulators can be used in electronic devices (e.g. calculators or TV sets) or for traction purposes (e.g. in lawn mowers). The accumulators combine the advantages of both Pb-acid and alkaline accumulators. They are lighter in weight and give a higher energy density than the former, and are cheaper to produce and more compact than the latter.
