Abstract

Novel U.V. stabilisers consist of hindered piperidine carboxylic acids, and their metal salts, of formula (I) (where R1 and R2 are 1-6C alkyl, or together form cyclopentyl or cyclohexyl, opt. mono-substd. by Me; R3 is H, 1-12C alkyl, beta-methoxyethyl, 3-4C alkenyl, propargyl, or opt. alkyl-substd. bezyl; M is H, Ba, Ni, Mn, Ca, Zn, Na, Co, Sn, dialkyl-Sn, dialkyl-Sn, Li, K, Mg or Al; z is 1-4 where z is free valency of M; r5 is oxy or imino; if M is H and R5 is oxy, R4 is 5-10C alkylene or (CHi)mY(CH2)n, in all other cases R4 is 1-10C alkylene, opt. alkyl-substd. phenylene or (CH2)mY(CH2)2n; Y is O or S; and m and n are each 1-3). Used for stabilising synthetic org. polymers, pref. polyolefines, esp. polypropylene, also aliphatic ester lubricants, animal or plat oils, hydrocarbons, fatty acid salts and alkylene glycols. Polymers are stabilised against discolouration and embrittlement through light.
