Abstract

The chute (10) is particularly for evacuating offshore oil drilling platforms in the event of fire, and can be inflated so as to extend from a high platform (11) to a lower surface (12). Flexible guide members (18) are attached to opposite sides of an extensible portion of the chute, and fixed to supports mounted on the platform to either side of the chute. These members prevent the chute sliding sideways in the extended position. The chute can hinge on the platform on a horizontal axis, the supports being so positioned that the guide members attached to them are situated at points along the horizontal axis. Thus they resist sideways movement as the chute swings up and down.
