Abstract

In a continuous process for sepng. lactams from reaction mixts. contg. conc. H2SO4 and possibly free SO3 by means of a water-immiscible or poorly miscible organic solvent, the bond between lactam and H2SO4 is weakened, before the extn., by addn. of a soln. contg. ammonium or alkali hydroxide or carbonate, in amt. such that the molar ratio of sulphate formed: sulphate + free H2SO4 is is not 1/8:1. The aq. soln. contg. H2SO4 and ammonium or alkali sulphate remaining after extn. of lactam is used for the decompsn. of crude phosphate, to form calcium sulphate and a soln. contg. free H3PO4; after removal of CaSO4 and neutralising with ammonia or caustic alkali, this soln. is withdrawn as a dihydrogen phosphate soln. from which solid ammonium or alkali dihydrogen phosphate is recovered by evapn. The aq. soln. reamining after the lactam extn. is fairly conc. but has a low crystallisation point; it can therefore be easily transported, and lactam prodn. and phosphate decompsn. do not need to be carried out in one locality.
