Description
A pocket portable manual herb grinder with interchangeable token, and assembly of grinder and tray
The present invention relates to a pocket portable manual herb grinder, comprising a first grinder portion and a second grinder portion designed for defining a grinding chamber therebetween, wherein the first and second portions are reversibly detachable.
Pocket portable grinders are more commonly also known as key- chain sized herb grinders. These grinders are usually between 4 and 10 cm tall, with a width or diameter between 3 and 6 cm.
Pocket portable grinders can be used for grinding any number of organic materials. However, customarily the grinders are used for comminuting smokeable plant materials to a more manageable millimeter sized material for preparing a cigarette. Very popular is grinding tobacco and/or hemp based materials. A problem is that presently, it’s no longer just cool to smoke.
One also has to show oneself knowledgeable in pop-culture. To this end the grinders are usually provided with particular miniature reproductions of mimetically virulent art pieces. This provides the operator of the grinder with an air of edgy ‘je ne sais quoi’. Through intense study it has been discovered that having the right piece of art will provide additional reproductive opportunities to the operator. It is however experienced as exceedingly cumbersome to carry more than one grinder for making an appropriate impression. At present operators have to resort to purchasing and logging around multiple Rick & Morty themed keychain grinders, as well as having at least one Homer Simpson in a pocket of one’s choosing.
Accidental mix-ups have been known to lead to romantic rejection and a subsequent poor enjoyment of the ground product. Many grinders are furthermore single purpose tools of low quality which means that they are often discarded after the operator discovers that their bulging pocket can and will indeed be confused with them being happy to see someone. The inventors, have set out on a quest to spare the world such agony and aim to provide a key chain grinder that allows for a much greater flexibility of one’s cultural flexes. Additionally, it is an aim of the invention to do away with the single purpose nature of
- 2 = the tool so as to improve the usefulness of the tool and simultaneously prevent it from being discarded as a mere trinket on a whim, such as after a loss of fancy.
To this end, and according to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a pocket portable manual herb grinder wherein an outer face of the first portion comprises an upstanding edge surrounding a recessed surface, and a token {and wherein the token is assembled, preferably magnetically detachable, with the recessed surface so that the recessed surface is inlaid with said token.
Allowing an interchangeable token allows for a user to adjust ones cultural tuning to his or her environment as the token can be interchanged with one carrying a different print. To have a token, usually disk shaped and at least partially made of metal, the user is instantly provided with a simple tool to weigh down rolling papers on ones rolling tray without removing components from the grinder that are critical to the grinding process.
The token may have a size which is within the range of the width 2-4 cm as within this size range the token may be made compatible with most trolley accepted coins. Preferably, the diameter of the token is however 3.3-3.7 cm, as this size allows for the comfortable full grip of a human thumb thus facilitating easy removal from the grinder, as well as facilitating the handling of the token as a tool (such as a weight). It was found that above 3.7 cm, but especially above 4 cm in size, the width of the token may become somewhat bothersome, as the diameter of the grinder beyond this size would not allow for the easy pocketing of the tool as a whole. It would be considered too wide and could potentially interfere with wallets causing an uncomfortable pressure or potentially damage other pocketed items. It is noted for reference that the size of one thumb, that is to say the print of the thumb, is considered to be 2,573 cm, this is also called “the Amsterdam thumb”. This is an old
Dutch measurement of length as is recorded on http://web.archive.org/web/20220614104408/https://wetenschap.i nfonu.nl/diversen/157549-oude-nederlandse-lengtematen.html.
- 3 =
The token may additionally have a upwardly curved upper surface, wherein the curved upper surface may comprise a transparent portion, that is to say see-through, material, such as a glass, polymer or a resin material. The transparent portion would cover a metal base layer comprising an aesthetic print pleasing to a user. Beneficially, the curved transparent surface provides a protection of the aesthetics of the grinder, as well as a smoother feel and the pocketed carrying of the grinder.
Optionally, the recessed surface is itself provided with a recess comprising an inlaid magnet, wherein the upper surface of the magnet is flush with the recessed surface, and wherein the token comprises a magnetic metal portion for magnetically attractively cooperating with the magnet. This allows for the token to comfortably remain in place, without falling out.
The token may further also be designed as a tool, such as a kitchen magnet, a bottle opener, a cutting tool, and/or a paper weight of at least 8 gram. This gives the user to tweak his grinder to his own preferences. Beneficially, the token can be selected so as to be no heavier than 25 grams. Above this weight, the token may unnecessarily disturb a rolling tray if dropped thereon by accident. If a smokeable is rolled in a tray, such as on ones legs, 1t 1s considered good that the rolling paper be guarded against passing air, while simultaneously the token not shift the center off mass too much.
Beneficially the token can be designed so that it only has one possible way of connect to the first portion. This provides rotation and accidental loss of the token through fidgeting. To this end from a top-down view the token and recessed surface can be made substantially the same size and shape and/or wherein from a top-down view the token and recessed surface have a same rotational symmetry Cn, wherein n is 1. The combination of features is preferable. Specifically the above rotational symmetry can be accomplished by providing the upstanding wall with a protrusion that extends radially inward, and wherein the token comprises a lateral recess to match said protrusion in shape and size.
To allow the first and second portions to effectively keep connected to one another as the first and second portions are rotated counter each other for grinding the first grinder portion and second grinder portion each comprise a magnetic portion, wherein these magnetic portions are attractively cooperatively arranged along the rotational axis of the grinding chamber.
To improve grinding and mixability the first grinder portion can comprise a central column which extends along the rotational axis of the grinding chamber, wherein said column holds the magnetic portion of the first grinder portion, and wherein the column is either designed as a cylinder comprising radial protrusions, such as 0.1-1 mm in size, and/or designed so as to be substantially triangularly shaped in horizontal cross- section. The protrusions are beneficially allowed to act as baffles which encourage mixing of ground materials.
In order to prevent the grinder from spontaneously disassembling by lifting it up by its first portion the strength of the magnetic portions can be chosen such that the pulling force required to separate the first and second portion is greater than the pulling force on the second portion under gravity, such that the grinder can be lifted in its entirety against gravity by its first portion alone. All these features beneficially improve the quality of the pocket sized grinders without any real structural modification and would already greatly improve its functioning.
In order to allow the user to properly operate the grinder the lateral circumferential surface of the first portion can be knurled. Beneficially the grinding experience may be improved by reduced friction between rotating parts. This also prevents damage while grinding. To this end the first portion may comprise a downwardly extending skirt integral with the first portion, wherein the second portion comprises an outer ledge, and wherein second portion can be provided with a plastic ring which covers the ledge so that, in use, the skirt rests on the ring.
In order to prevent loss of ground materials to the surroundings the second portion may be provided with a bottom surface comprising through holes for allowing ground material to pass through, and wherein the grinder further comprises a grind receptable, wherein the grind receptacle would be connectable to the second portion via a screw threaded connection.
To prevent accidental disassembly during forceful grinding the grind receptacle may comprise a metal mesh filter, and a bottom, wherein the bottom is detachable from the rest of the grind receptacle via another screw threaded connection, wherein optionally the rotational direction for the fastening of the bottom to the rest of the receptacle is the same direction for fastening the receptacle to the second portion.
When preparing a smokeable in a non-stationary environment the, such as on the backseat of a car, it is hard to just put down or repocket the grinder. To this end the grind receptacle may comprise a magnet at its bottom face, such as formed from a flexible anisotropic magnetic tape or sticker. This would prevent loss of the grinder between the backseat of the car half way through preparing a smokeable, for example, when used in combination with a metal rolling tray. For the purpose of clarity it is noted that the rolling tray is any tray of a surface size between 50-500cm? suitable for rolling a cigarette on.
In order to further improve grip for grinding the lateral circumferential surface of the bottom of the receptable is knurled, so that, in use grinding is performed by gripping and rotating the lateral circumferential surface of the first portion and the lateral circumferential surface of the bottom and rotating them with respect to each other in opposite relative directions. It should be understood that the receptacle thus co- moves with the second portion without detaching during the act of grinding. In use here refers to the act of grinding a material with the grinder.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is prevented an assembly of a rolling tray and the grinder according to the first aspect of the invention.
As mentioned, cooperation between tray and grinder is favorable in non-stationary environments. To this end the rolling tray may comprise at least one magnetic metal surface portion which surface portion is larger than the horizontal diameter of grinder, and wherein the rolling tray and grinder are assembled together by the cooperative magnetic connection of the magnet at the bottom face of the grind receptacle and the metal surface portion of the rolling tray.
Beneficially, the rolling tray may comprise a base structure of an organic material, such as bamboo or wood, wherein the base structure comprises a substantially cylindrical recess defining at most 40% of the total surface of the tray, and wherein the magnetic metal surface portion is substantially disk shaped with a diameter that is substantially equal to the diameter of the cylindrical recess, wherein the metal surface portion is fixed the base structure, such as by glue, within said recess. This design allows the grinder to have a particular insert destination on the tray allowing the user a more limited range of operations on said tray for better oversight.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a kit of parts of a grinder and a plurality of, optionally mutually different, interchangeable tokens.
The present invention is further elucidated by means of the following figures: - Fig. 1 shows an exploded schematic cross-sectional view of a grinder according to the invention; - Fig. 2 shows a schematic top down view of the grinder and token; - Fig. 3 shows a schematic cross-sectional view of the assembly of the grinder and a rolling tray; and - Fig. 4 shows a schematic overview of a kit of parts.
Figure 1 shows an exploded schematic cross-sectional view of a pocket portable manual herb grinder 1. The grinder has a grinding
- 7 = body consisting of a first and second grinder portion 2, 3. The grinding body can be made of an aluminum or stainless steel material. The first grinder portion 2 and a second grinder portion 3 are designed for defining a grinding chamber 4 therebetween. The first grinder portion 2 and second grinder portion 3 each comprise a magnetic portion 2.1, 3.1, which are attractively cooperatively arranged along the rotational axis Z of the grinding chamber making the first and second portions are reversibly detachable. The person skilled in the art will know that there are other ways in making the first and second portions reversibly detachable, such as by providing the first and second portions respectively with complementary portions together forming a bayonet fastener, wherein the fastener allows a the two portions to lock in a single direction of rotation and unlock in the direction opposite to said single direction of rotation.
It is noted that the magnetic portions 2.1, 3.1 allow for any direction of rotation without unlocking the first and second portions from each other. It is only with sufficient pulling force in the longitudinal direction that the first and second portions are separable, which is substantially perpendicular any grinding forces as a result of rotation for grinding. For grinding, in this example, the first and second portions each comprising a plurality of protrusions 2.2, 3.2 which extend into the grinding chamber 4. in use, that is to say during grinding when the first and second portions are assembled, herb material is diminuted in the grinding chamber 4 between the pluralities of protrusions 2.2, 3.2. Each of the protrusions of each of the pluralities of protrusions 2.2, 3.2 is ribbed only on surfaces facing radially inward or outward with respect to the longitudinal axis Z. This particular feature is optional, but beneficial for preventing any undesirable retention of material.
This is particularly beneficial for when the selected material comprises hemp. In the invention an outer face 6 of the first portion has an upstanding edge 7 surrounding a recessed surface 8. The first portion further has a token 11. The recessed surface 8 can be inlaid with said token 11 in a removable manner. The recessed surface 8 is in turn itself provided with a recess 3 comprising an inlaid magnet 10. The upper surface of the magnet is flush with the recessed surface 8 and the token comprises a magnetic metal portion for magnetically attractively cooperating with the magnet. Recess 9 may be 2 mm in diameter arranged along the longitudinal axis Z of the grinder. Thus, making it possible for the token to be reversibly magnetically assembled with the recessed surface. The person skilled in the art will know there are other ways of assembly. It is possible, in an alternative example that the first magnetic portion 2.1 is part of magnet 10.
The token itself comprises a metal base (not shown, but customary) and a top layer with a designed print. The top layer can be a polymer layer with an esthetic design. In principle this allows for tokens to be collectable and an interchangeable items. While trading and collecting these tokens is experienced as fun the ability to have this token be interchangeable further fulfills a user need. The token, by grace of its metal and thus weighted base, can be used much like a coin. That is to say, it can be placed on top of a rolling paper, so as to prevent it from shifting. To this end the token is preferably designed to weigh at least 8 grams, but lighter tokens are possible. In an alternative example the token can designed as a kitchen magnet.
For such design the token need not have any particular weight.
It already by grace of its magnetic properties will allow a flow paper to be held down against a magnetic metal surface. Magnetic as a term here does not mean that something is itself a magnet, but merely that it reacts attractively in the presence of a magnet. A kitchen magnet token may also allow magnet 10 to be substituted for a magnetic material, such as iron, an iron based alloy. Yet further alternatively, and not reflected in the drawings the token can be designed as a trolley coin, a bottle opener or even as a cutting tool. For the latter form the token may simply be provided with a sharp edge, that is to say that opposing sides of the edge form a 40-10 degree angle.
Inside the grinding chamber some very particular features can be noted. Most notably, the first grinder portion has a central column C which extends along the rotational axis Z of the grinder, which is the same as the rotational axis of the grinding chamber 4. The column C holds the magnetic portion 2.1 of the first grinder portion 2. The column is in this example designed as a cylinder comprising three radial protrusions Cl. Each of these radial protrusions extends along the entire length of the column, and is between 0.1-1 mm in size. Magnetic portion 2.1 is glued to a recess in the cylinder at its lower end.
Beneficially the strength of the magnetic portions 2.1, 3.1 are chosen such that the pulling force required to separate the first and second portion is greater than the pulling force on the second portion under gravity, such that the grinder can be lifted in its entirety against gravity by its first portion alone. To this end at least one of the magnetic portions can be made a neodymium magnet with a pulling strength that exceeds the weight of the grinder below the first grinder portion. This includes the weight of any grind receptable 14 that is attached to second portion 2.
The first portion is in this example further provided with a downwardly extending skirt 16, which is integral with the first portion 2. The second portion has an outer ledge 17 provided with a plastic ring 18 which covers the ledge so that, in use, the skirt rests on the ring. The plastic ring can be chosen to be a PET, PP, PE with a surface having at least the same, but preferably a lower roughness relative to the surface of the outer ledge 17. The roughness here refers to arithmetic average roughness, Ra of profile height deviations from a mean line as described in Degarmo, E. Paul; Black, J.; Kohser, Ronald A. (2003), Materials and Processes in Manufacturing (2th ed.),
Wiley, p. 223. With equal roughness at least friction caused damage is prevented, and with reduced roughness the rotational friction by metal on metal contact is reduced during the act of grinding. Grinding here involves the counter rotating the first and second portions 2, 3 while these portions are assembled.
It is noted that though a grind receptable is optional 14 it is quite handy to collect the grinds within the grinder, lest the invention be used as a pepper mill. Its optionality is in Figure 1 indicated by short dashed lines. In order for the grinds to exit the grinding chamber 4 the second portion, has a bottom surface with through holes 15. It is through these holes that
- 10 = ground material passes to the grind receptacle 14. Said grind receptacle 14 is shown to be connectable to the second portion via a screw threaded connection.
In order to improve rotational grip the lateral circumferential surface 19 of the first portion is knurled. Similarly, the the lateral circumferential surface 20 of a bottom 21 of the receptable 14 is knurled, so that grinding is performed by gripping and rotating the lateral circumferential surface of the first portion and the lateral circumferential surface of the bottom and rotating them with respect to each other in opposite relative directions.
The grind receptacle 14 is in this example designed to be bi- compartmental comprising a metal mesh filter 22. The bottom 21 is made detachable from the rest of the grind receptacle 14 via another screw threaded connection. This allows fine powders to be separately collected from courser grinds and separately accessed through opening particular sections of the grinder. The screw threaded connection has a rotational direction for the fastening of the bottom to the rest of the receptacle which is the same rotational direction for fastening as for fastening the receptacle to the second portion. The rest of the receptacle is here the upper part of the receptacle 23 in which the metal mesh filter 22 has been furnished. Optionally, the grind receptacle comprises a magnet 24 at its bottom face B. The magnet 24 is in this example formed from a flexible anisotropic magnetic sticker. So as to prevent this sticker from detaching over time the bottom face B may be provided with a recess with substantially the same shape and dimensions as the magnet 24.
The recess may then be inlaid with the magnet and fixed with glue.
Figure 2 shows a schematic top down view of both the grinder 1 and the token 11 separately, wherein the grinder is shown with the token removed and placed to the side. In this view the token and recessed surface 8 ca be seen as having substantially the same size and shape. From a top down view the token is substantially circular with a first diameter Dl and having a radial recess 13 that only extends over a part of the circumference of the token. The recess 13 does not extend beyond a second diameter D2 of an imaginary circle concentric with the circle having the first diameter D1. D2 is smaller than Dl. In this example between 1-20% so as to prevent rotation of the token 11 with respect to the recessed surface 8 without sacrificing too much of the token so that it will cause any unfortunate associations with Pac-Man. As a secondary matter, it is highly undesirable to have a token comprise unnecessarily long pointy bits that aren't comfortably transported in one’s pocket. For this same reason, preferably, all circumferential angular transitions T on the token are dull, that is to say greater than 80 degrees. By grace of the recess 13 the token and has a rotational symmetry C,, wherein n is 1. It should be understood that where the token has a recess 13, the upstanding wall 7 of the first portion has a protrusion 12. It for the purpose of clarity pointed out that line A-A represents the cross-section as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a schematic cross-sectional view of the assembly of the grinder 1 and a rolling tray 100. In this example the rolling tray 1 has magnetic metal surface portion 101 larger length and width than the diameter D3 of grinder 1. The rolling tray 100 and grinder 1 are assembled together by the cooperative magnetic connection of the magnet 24 at the bottom face B of the grind receptacle 14 and the metal surface portion 101 of the rolling tray. The rolling tray has a base structure 102 of bamboo. Clearly shown in this example, though very much optional, the base structure comprises a substantially cylindrical recess 103 defining at most 40% of the total surface of the tray, and wherein the magnetic metal surface portion 101 is substantially disk shaped with a diameter that is substantially equal to the diameter of the cylindrical recess
D4. The metal surface portion is fixed the base structure, such as by glue, within said recess 103.
Reflected in Figure 4 is a kit of parts of a grinder 1 and a plurality of interchangeable tokens 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, preferably mutually different, such as different in functionality or print,
which are provided to allow a user to personalize his grinder.
In one example 11.1 is designed as a bottle opener, 11.2 as a coin for a shopping cart, and 11.3 as a cutting tool.
Alternatively, they are all simple designed as a token of at least 8 grams for weighing down paper, whereas merely the theme of the token varies.
Concludingly, the invention is described according to the following aspects: 1. A pocket portable manually operable herb grinder (1) comprising a first grinder portion {2} and a second grinder portion (3) designed for defining a grinding chamber (4) therebetween, wherein the first and second portions are reversibly detachable, characterized in that an outer face (6) of the first portion comprises an upstanding edge (7) surrounding a recessed surface (8), and a token (11) and wherein the token (11) is assembled, preferably magnetically detachable, with the recessed surface so that the recessed surface is inlaid with said token. 2. The grinder according to aspect 1, wherein the recessed surface is itself provided with a recess (9) comprising an inlaid magnet (10), wherein the upper surface of the magnet is flush with the recessed surface (8), and wherein the token comprises a magnetic metal portion for magnetically attractively cooperating with the magnet. 3. The grinder according to aspect 1 or 2, wherein the token is designed as a tool, such as a kitchen magnet, a bottle opener, a cutting tool, and/or a paper weight of at least 8 gram. 4.
