Description
P121364NL00 Title: Air filter assembly for an internal combustion engine of a commercial motor vehicle.
The invention relates to an air filter assembly for an internal combustion engine of a commercial motor vehicle, said air filter assembly comprising an intake air inlet duct, a filter system for purifying the intake air supplied by the intake air inlet duct and a filtered air duct for supplying filtered air from the filter system to the internal combustion engine, said filter system comprising a filtration element arranged in a filter housing.
In order to prevent or reduce the negative effect of the presence of water in the intake air supplied to an internal combustion engine it is for example known from US-A-3,641,744 to arrange a water separator in the form of an elbow directly upstream of the air filtration element which is arranged inside a flat housing having a top wall, a bottom wall, and side walls. One of the side walls of the flat housing comprises an inlet opening for the intake air, which is supplied to inlet opening by an intake air inlet duct which is arranged adjacent the side walls of the flat housing. The elbow is arranged adjacent side walls of the flat housing and is in fluid communication with the intake air inlet duct and diverts the intake air laterally at substantially a right angle from the intake air inlet duct into the filter housing. Excess moisture impinges on the surface of the elbow and is gathered in a lower trough integrated with the elbow. Although in this known arrangement of flat housing, intake air inlet duct and elbow with lower trough water or moisture can be separated from the intake air the known construction is too bulky to be used in modern commercial motor vehicles, in particular trucks, in which due to number the components contained in the engine compartment the space in the vehicle compartment is limited.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a compact air filter assembly for an internal combustion engine of a commercial motorvehicle in which water or moisture can be efficiently separated from the intake air.
According to the invention this object is obtained by an air filter assembly for an internal combustion engine of a commercial motor vehicle according to claim 1. The invention is based on the insight that intake air passes through the intake air inlet duct in a swirling motion. Due to the swirling motion of the intake air inside the intake air inlet duct moisture content of the intake air will as a result of the centrifugal force exerted thereupon be deposited on an inner wall of the intake air inlet duct. By providing the top wall of the filter housing with a top inlet opening, by arranging the inlet duct end in fluid communication with this top inlet opening and by arranging the moisture accumulating and discharge element upstream of the filtration element and downstream of the intake air inlet duct the air filter assembly for an internal combustion engine can be realized in a compact manner while still being able to separate moisture from the intake air in an efficient manner.
In an embodiment of an air filter assembly for an internal combustion engine of a commercial motor vehicle according to the invention the moisture accumulating and discharge element comprises an annular gutter with a drainage, said annular gutter being arranged adjacent the inlet duct end, said annular gutter having a radial annular inner wall having a diameter smaller than an inner diameter of the inlet duct end. By using such an annular gutter the air filter assembly can be constructed in a compact manner, and the annular gutter accumulates the moisture dripping or seeping down of the inner wall of the intake air inlet duct. The drainage allows for gathered moisture to be discharged from the gutter. The annular gutter can be connected to the inlet duct end and/or the annular gutter can be connected to an inlet stud of the housing, which inlet stud projects from the top wall and surrounds the top inlet opening.
In a further embodiment of an air filter assembly for an internal combustion engine of a commercial motor vehicle according to the invention the bottom wall of the housing comprises a further drainage for discharging moisture from said housing. By using such a further drainage in the bottom wall of the filter housing, moisture or water content in the intake air that that 1s still contained in the intake air that has passed the moisture accumulating and discharge element and that has been deposited on the inner walls of the filter housing and dripped or seeped down on the bottom wall of the filter housing, can be discharged from the filter housing thereby providing an additional dehydration of the intake air.
The invention will be further explained with reference to the Figure, in which a non-limiting exemplary embodiment of an air filter assembly for an internal combustion engine of a commercial motor vehicle according to the invention is shown: Fig. 1 schematically shows an embodiment of an air filter assembly for an internal combustion engine of a commercial motor vehicle according to the invention in perspective and cut open.
In Figure 1 the air filter assembly for an internal combustion engine of a commercial motor vehicle is indicated by reference numeral 1. The air filter assembly 1 comprises an intake air inlet duct 2, a filter system 3 for purifying the intake air supplied by the intake air inlet duct 2 and a filtered air duct 4 for supplying filtered and dehydrated air (as indicated by the arrows 11”) from the filter system 3 to an internal combustion engine of the commercial motor vehicle (not shown).
The filter system 3 is positioned downstream of the intake air inlet duct 2 and comprises a filtration element 5 arranged in a filter housing 6,
through which filtration element 5 the intake air flows as indicated by arrows 11°.
The filtered air duct 4 is positioned downstream of the filter system
3.
As shown in Figure 1 the filter housing 6 comprises a top wall 7 and a bottom wall 8 arranged opposite the top wall 7. In the top wall 7 a top inlet opening 9 is provided to allow intake air to enter to the inside of the filter housing 6.
The intake air inlet duct 2 has an inlet duct end 10 arranged in fluid communication with the top inlet opening 9. During operation of the commercial motor vehicle intake air passes through the intake air inlet duct 2 in a swirling motion indicated by the arrows 11. Due to the swirling motion of the intake air inside the intake air inlet duct 2 moisture content (indicated by drops 12) of the intake air will be deposited on an inner wall 13 of the intake air inlet duct 2 as a result of the centrifugal force exerted thereupon.
According to the invention the air filter assembly 1 comprises a moisture accumulating and discharge element 14 upstream of the filtration element 5 and downstream of the intake air inlet duct 2 for accumulating moisture 12 deposited on the inner wall 13 of the intake air inlet duct 2.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 1 the moisture accumulating and discharge element 14 comprises an annular gutter 15 with a drainage
16. The annular gutter 15 is arranged adjacent the inlet duct end 10 and is — in the shown embodiment — connected to the inlet duct end 10. This connection can be a permanent or releasable connection. The connection preferably is a sealing connection to avoid air leakage. The annular gutter 15 has a radial annular inner wall 17 having a diameter smaller than an inner diameter of the inlet duct end 10. During operation of the commercial motor vehicle the annular gutter 15 thus can accumulate moisture dripping or seeping down of the inner wall 13 of the intake air inlet duct 2 and thegathered moisture 1s discharged (indicate by arrow 18) from the gutter 15 by means of the drainage 16, which can be formed by an aperture, a valve or the like.
As shown in Figure 1 in the embodiment of the air filter assembly 1 5 for an internal combustion engine of a commercial motor vehicle the filter housing 6 comprises an inlet stud 19 projecting from the top wall 7 and surrounding the top inlet opening 9 in the top wall 7. The annular gutter 15 is connected to the inlet stud 19, preferably in a sealing manner to avoid air leakage.
Depending on the moisture or water content in the intake air it is possible that the intake air that has passed by the moisture accumulating and discharge element 14 still comprises moisture or water as indicated by the drops 12’. This moisture can be deposited on the inner walls of the filter housing 6 and can drip or seep down therefrom on the bottom wall 8 of the filter housing 6. It is also possible that moisture is gathered in the filtration element 5 and drips from the filtration element 5 on the bottom wall 8. The moisture gathered on the bottom wall 8 can be discharged from the filter housing 6 (as indicated by arrow 21) by means of a further drainage 20 provided in the bottom wall 8 of the filter housing. The further drainage 20 can be formed by an aperture, a (vacuum) valve or the like, which is preferably positioned at the lowest point of the bottom wall 8 so that moisture gathered on the bottom wall 8 can flow towards the further drainage 20, as indicated by the arrows 22.
