Control device for an electrical load and cover plate
The present invention relates to a control device for an electrical load, comprising a housing, which housing comprises a first housing part for a first device part with at least one input terminal for an electrical power supply and with at least one output terminal for the load, and at least one further housing part which is connected to the first housing part, and comprises control means by which an electric power supply level for the electric consumer can be set between the input terminal and the output terminal.
A device of the type referred to in the opening paragraph is for instance known as a conventional in wall dimmer, in which case the load is typical a light source or similar appliance. To date most wall dimmers are not wirelessly connected with a remote control device like a smart phone or internet. To enable wireless control of room lighting, manufacturers are designing an integrated wireless function within the wall dimmer housing. The dimmer housing is fixed in the wall mounting box. A problem is that each dimmer is dedicated to one specific wireless protocol, while there are many protocols available. These protocols are not compatible with each other. As installed dimmers have typical an operational lifetime often to twenty years, it is not to be expected that such an integrated wireless protocol will last as long as the dimmer lifetime due to fast changes in wireless technology. Users, especially consumers, and installers are aware of this and judge this as a significant barrier to the introduction of wireless technology due to replacement and repeating installation costs by a new dimmer over the years.
It is therefore, amongst others, an object of the invention to provide a control device for an electrical load that offers additional flexibility for the implementation of wireless technology therein.
In order to achieve said object a control device of the type described in the opening paragraph is according to the invention characterized in that the control means comprise communication means for wireless signal transmission with remote control means which provide a user interface for setting the power level for the load, in that the communication means are accommodated in the at least one further housing part, and that the further housing part and the communication means can be disconnected mechanically and electronically manually from the first device part.
-2The invention takes a modular approach wherein the wireless function is split from the functional, electrical control part. As such, the wireless technology is accommodated in a further device housing part, which may typically take the form of a cover plate that many control devices, like wall dimmers, often use for aesthetical purposes or may comprise a control button or knob itself that normally merely facilitates a manual control over the device. In a conventional control device, such a cover plate has no control function, nor electronics, but merely holds one or more of such control knobs or buttons for manual operation.
A specific embodiment of the control device according to the invention is characterized in that the first housing part is intended and configured to be received at least substantially completely recessed in a wall of a building, and that the power source comprises a mains network. As such the first device housing part may for instance fit into a wall junction box that lies completely recessed in the wall of a building. According to the invention, the wireless communication means, like a chip and antenna of sender and/or transmitter means, are integrated in the further device housing part like for instance a cover plate. This additional wireless electronics is connected operationally with the control circuit in the first device part that stays in the wall junction box. The advantage of the invention is that changing to another wireless protocol merely requires a new cover plate that accommodates such other wireless technology. The (re)placement of cover plates, without installation of the first part of the device like a dimmer itself, is relatively easy and can be done by the consumer without being qualified as installer. Particularly the operational connection between the additional electronics in this further device housing part and the control circuit may be effected at low voltage, while the first device housing part with for instance a control circuit at mains voltage need not be replaced or even touched.
In a further particular embodiment of the control device according to the invention is characterized in that a wire-bound electronic connection is present between the communication means and the first device part. In that case the connection between the further device housing part and the first device part may comprise complementary electrical contacts that cooperate mutually to establish said wire bound connection.
In another further particular embodiment, the control device according to the invention is characterized in that a wireless electronic connection is present between the communication
-3means and the first device part, in particular an optical connection, an inductive connection or a radiographic connection. In that case a mechanical connection between the further device housing part and the first device (housing) part will suffice to join said device parts both physically and electronically together. This will further ease the installation or replacement of the further device (housing) part by the end user.
The electronic connection that is established between the communication means and the first device part may provide a means for data exchange but moreover may provide for a power supply to the communication means and possibly further electronics in the further device housing part. In that respect, a further specific embodiment of the control device according to the invention is characterized in that the communication means take their electrical supply from the first device part via the electronic connection. Alternatively, the communication means and possible further electronics in the further device housing part may acquire a power supply wirelessly. In that respect a further embodiment of the control device according to the invention is characterized in that the communication means take their electrical supply wirelessly from the first device part.
In order to fit seamlessly into an existing wireless infrastructure, a further embodiment of the control device according to the invention is characterized in that the communication means are configured and adapted to operate according to a standard protocol for wireless data transmission, in particular according to a BlueTooth, WiFi, NFC or similar standard protocol for wireless communication. The latter particularly includes future protocols and standards for wireless transmission and data exchange. The present invention provides an excellent means to accommodate such future protocols by simply replacing the further device housing part with the corresponding electronics.
The control device according to the invention may take the form of a relatively simple on-off switch between the input terminal and the output terminal or may be more sophisticated by incorporating further features like for instance a twilight sensor circuit or timer circuit to provide more autonomous control over the load. In this respect, a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the first device part comprises an electronic dimmer circuit by which a dimmer level can be set between the input terminal and the output terminal.
-4The invention further relates to a cover plate for use in the control device according to the invention as the further device housing part, comprising communication means for wireless signal transmission with remote control means and comprising electro-mechanical coupling means for a manually detachable electronic/mechanic attachment to a first device part, and will now be elucidated with reference to a specific embodiment and an accompanying drawing in the drawing:
Figure 1 shows a cross-section of an example of the control device according to the invention that is received in a wall junction box;
Figure 2 shows a frontal view on the control device of figure 1.
It should be noticed that the drawings are purely schematic and not drawn to scale. Particularly certain dimension might be exaggerated to lesser or more extent for sake of clarity.
Figure 1 shows an example of a control device according to the invention, which in this example functions as an in-wall dimmer for an electrical load, like a light source as an incandescent lamp, a LED fixture or similar lighting means. The control device is accommodated in a housing that comprises a first housing part 10 to be received in a standard plastic wall junction box 5 and a further housing part 20 on top of the junction box 5. The junction box 5 lies entirely recessed in a wall 1 of a building, like an office or a residential home, as shown in the drawing. Outside the plane of the drawing, said junction box 5 provides inlets in several directions for electrical cabling which the skilled person is assumed to be entirely familiar with.
The first device housing part 10 comprises a metal mounting plate 12 by which it is secured to the junction box using standard mounting screws 11. Inside the first housing part 10, the control device comprises a control circuit 15 in between a pair of input terminals 16,17 and an output terminal 18. The input terminals are connected to a mains network of the building, while the output terminal connects to the load. A power source, i.e. dimmer, level may be set on the output terminal 18 by means of a rotary knob 22 that is mounted on a rotation shaft 21 that extends from the first device part 15 inside the first housing part 10. The shaft 21 may connect to a variable resistor or capacitor as part of the circuit 15 to set the desired power level.
The second device housing part 20 comprises an aesthetic cover plate made of plastic, metal or any other material or colour that matches the interior of the building. This part 20 is
-5mechanically connected to the first device housing part by means of a locking nut 23 that is mounted on a stationary jacket 24 surrounding said shaft 21. The second device housing part is, hence, easily detachable from the first device housing part mechanically by simply unscrewing said nut 23 and taking apart both parts of the device housing. Other mechanical attachment means are also feasible for detachably connecting the second device house part to first device (housing) part, like for instance a mechanical clamping mechanism or the like.
According to the invention this second device housing part 20 contains communication means 25 for wireless communication with an external remote control device 30 of the user. This remote control device 30 may be a handheld device, like the one depicted in figure 2, or be an applet or other piece of software running on a smart device, like a smart phone, tablet computer or laptop computer, and provides a user interface by which the user may select an appropriate supply power level of the control device.
In this example these communication means 25 comprise a BlueTooth transceiver chipset together with an appropriate antenna and electronic circuitry compatible with a standard Blue-Tooth protocol of any existing generation. Instead of or together with the Blue-Tooth chipset the second device housing part 20 may also be equipped with a chipset for another wireless communication platform, like for instance WiFi of any existing generation. The second device housing part 20 may further contain a battery or similar power supply for said electronics or said electronics may take their power supply from the first device part over a set of electrodes 28,29. These electrodes 28,29 are drawn merely schematically but in practice will comprise complementary contacts, like a male-female plug and socket, that are made and detached electrically when the second device housing part 20 is separated from the first housing part 10. This renders also this electrical connection easily detachable manually.
The electrodes 28,29 will operate at low voltage and, hence, provide no danger whatsoever to an end-user that would require certain specific skill. As a result the control device can be upgraded quit easily to any future or different communication protocol by simply replacing the second device housing portion 20 by another one that comprises such different or upgraded chipset 25, while the first device house part 10 that carries the mains voltage remains untouched. In the end the control device will be manually controllable as usual by means of the rotary knob 22 but additionally may be controlled on a distance as well using the remote
-6control device 30. To that end, the remote control device is also equipped with the appropriate Blue-Tooth or other wireless electronics such as transceiver chip, battery and antenna to have a direct communication with the control device.
Although the invention has been illustrated with reference to a single embodiment only, it will be appreciated that the invention is by no means limited to this embodiment. On the contrary, many variation and embodiments are feasible for a skilled person without departing from the scope and true spirit of the invention. As such, the electronic connection between the cover plate and the in wall part of the control device may also be established wirelessly, like for instance by means of an optical sender and receiver pair or by means of inductive or radio communication. A same or similar medium may not only be used for data exchange between both sides of the device but may also provide any necessary electric power transfer from the first device part to the second device part.
The cover plate may contain additional buttons) or knob(s) apart from the wireless electronics such as a transceiver chip, battery and antenna, or may contain no buttons or knobs at all. In the latter case the control device will be remote controlled only. The cover plate may fitted with connector means that at the same time connect both mechanically and electrically with the first (wall dimmer) device part. The cover plate can be separated from the wall dimmer part by disconnecting this electro-mechanical connector. The same cover design can be used for different wireless protocols and many further cover design may be used with the same wireless protocol to satisfy the end-user needs. Instead of or besides a direct communication between a remote control device and the control device for the electrical load, their can also be a control over the control device through a wireless (residential) building automation system residing in the building, like a wireless home automation system, like wireless KNX, or The Internet of Things (TIoT). This allows the control device to be integrated relatively easily within such a more or less sophisticated automation system.
In general, the invention proved a control device for setting a power level for an electrical load comprises a first housing part, that may be connected to a mains network to supply power at a selected level to the load, together with a second housing part, like a cover plate, that is mechanically detachable from the first device housing part. According to the invention the second device housing part is equipped with communication means, like a transceiver chipset, a
-7battery and an antenna, for wireless data exchange with remote control means. These communication means are coupled to a primary control circuit that resides in the first device housing part. In any event the present invention is considered to encompass the following non-limiting embodiments:
