Description
Telescopic leg and method of manufacturing such a telescopic leg for supporting a tabletop or similar
The invention relates to a telescopic leg and a method for manufacturing such a telescopic leg for supporting a tabletop or similar, comprising at least two leg parts, wherein a first leg part fits into a second leg part and wherein said first leg part and said second leg part are telescopically movable with respect to each other.
Telescopic legs are used for supporting tabletops or equipment and are intended to make it possible to adjust the height of such tabletops or equipment. As the name already indicates such known telescopic legs comprise at least two leg parts that are telescopically movable with respect to each other. One of the objects to meet in manufacturing a telescopic leg is to master and restrict the amount of variation in the dimensions of the leg parts -particularly the inner and outer dimensions of such leg parts- since this determines the level of play in the ready telescopic leg which is decisive for its quality. According to the prior art there are several ways of securing this quality and restrict the amount of play, of which can be noted: selection by trial and error of guide elements to be applied in the assembly of the first leg part and the second leg part and having the appropriate dimensions; working of selected guide elements to provide them with the required dimensions; applying one or more screws for offsetting the existing play in the assembly of the first leg part and the second leg part.
Notable disadvantages of these methods of manufacturing are that they are either time-consuming and costly, or are aesthetically less attractive or are disadvantageous in using them (for instance the offsetting screws).
It is an object of the invention to provide a telescopic leg which has minimal play and which can be manufactured relatively simply avoiding the drawbacks of the prior art methods .
According to the invention a telescopic leg and a method of manufacturing such a telescopic leg are proposed in accordance with one or more of the appended claims.
According to a first aspect of the invention the first leg part of the telescopic leg is provided with plastic guide elements which are heated during manufacturing of the leg so as to make said plastic guide elements plastically deformable, followed by inserting the first leg part into the second leg part enabling the plastically deformable guide elements to assume a shape in conformity with the second leg part. This is very effective in arranging that the amount of play in the ready telescopic leg is at the bare minimum, whereas the ease of manufacturing the leg of the invention is dramatically improved in comparison with the prior art manufacturing in which a piece by piece selection of guide elements was necessary. Suitable plastic guide elements are for instance made from polyoxymethyleen (POM). With such material it suffices to heat the plastic guide elements to a temperature of approximately 110 degrees centigrade.
To realize the benefits of the invention fully it is preferable that prior to inserting the first leg part into the second leg part the plastic guide elements protrude from the first leg part enabling said plastic guide elements to contact the second leg part during insertion of the first leg part into the second leg part.
Advantageously following the insertion of the first leg part into the second leg part the plastic guide elements are enabled to assume room temperature, therewith allowing them to assume their definite shape.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of an exemplary embodiment of manufacturing a telescopic leg according to the invention that is not limiting as to the appended claims.
In the drawing: -figure 1 shows an overview of a manufacturing facility for making a telescopic leg according to the invention; and -figure 2 shows a detail of what is shown in figure 1. ;
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
In the instant description showing a telescopic leg in its ready state is dispensed with, since such a telescopic leg is abundantly known to the skilled person and even to laymen. The features of the invention are better explained with reference to the method of manufacturing a telescopic leg according to the inverition. In this method for manufacturing a telescopic leg for supporting a tabletop or similar, at least two leg parts 1, 2 are provided as shown in figure 1. A first leg part 1 is arranged to fit into a second leg part 2, so as to arrange that after their' assembly said first leg part 1 and said second leg part 2 are telescopically movable with respect to each other.
In the method of the invention, the following steps are executed: -the first leg part 1 is provided with plastic guide elements 3; -said plastic guide elements 3 are heated so as to make said plastic guide elements 3 plastically deformable (which is in more detail shown in figure 2, showing the air heaters 4 that are applied for this purpose); and -inserting the first leg part 1 into the second leg 2 part enabling the plastically deformable guide elements 3 to assume a shape in conformity with the second leg part 2. This inserting step is done by for instance moving the first leg part 1 in the direction of arrow A into the second leg part 2. The skilled person understands that alternatively also the second leg part 2 could be moved into the direction of leg part 1, or that both leg parts 1, 2 are arranged to move towards each other.
Preferably it is arranged that in the step of providing the first leg part 1 with the plastic guide elements 3, the plastic guide elements 3 are made to protrude from the first leg part 1 enabling said plastic guide elements 3 to contact the second leg part 2 during insertion of the first leg part 1 into the second leg part 2.
The method of manufacturing the telescopic leg 1, 2 of the invention is then finalized by the step of cooling down of the plastic guide elements 3 to room temperature, which step follows the insertion of the first leg part 1 into the second leg part 2.
Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the telescopic leg and its method of manufacturing according to the invention, the invention is not restricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the gist of the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith. On the contrary the embodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims to this exemplary embodiment. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be resolved using this exemplary embodiment.
