Description
The present invention relates to an anaerobic water purification system for treating a liquid. In particular, such a liquid relates to a waste water stream, for example originating from the process industry.
Various water purification systems are known from practice. These include so-called aerobic and anaerobic water purification systems. Both concern biological purification in which use is made of microorganisms for breaking down organic material.
A problem with aerobic systems is the relatively low conversion and the generation of a lot of sludge that needs to be disposed of and possibly processed. In addition, a relatively large amount of energy is required for aerators, among others, to provide aerobic conditions during purification.
Anaerobic systems have the advantage that no oxygen needs to be supplied and that the system can therefore be implemented in a simple manner, and more energy-efficiently. In anaerobic systems, the organic material is broken down in a number of steps to ultimately CO2 and methane, or biogas. With conventional anaerobic waste water purification systems (UASB), the stream to be purified is passed through a layer in which the microorganisms are located to thereby effect the conversion / purification.
Conventional anaerobic systems use so-called three-phase separators, or "settlers" for this purpose. These three-phase separators are used to separate the sludge, gas and water flows. This requires additional components in the system, so that such systems are accompanied by significant additional investments.

The present invention has for its object to provide an improved anaerobic water purification system with which the purification can be carried out more effectively.
To this end, the present invention provides an anaerobic water purification system for treating a liquid according to the invention, the system comprising: - a container for the liquid to be treated in use provided with a sludge bed; - a supply line operatively connected to the container for supplying the liquid to be treated; - a distribution system connected to the supply line for distributing the liquid over the sludge bed from above; - carrier material provided in use in the container on which anaerobic sludge material can be established; and - a gas roof arranged on or on the container provided with a volume that can be adjusted to the biogas production in use.
A container comprises, for example, a storage vessel or tank into which the liquid to be treated can be introduced. The liquid is in particular a waste water stream, for example originating from the process industry, such as the paper industry, beer industry, etc. However, the liquid can also comprise other streams. Other components may optionally be present in the liquid in dissolved and / or solid form. The liquid is supplied via a supply line and subsequently distributed over substantially the entire surface of the container. According to the invention, the liquid is herein introduced from above, whereafter the liquid to be purified, for example waste water, flows down into the container. By introducing carrier material into the container on which anaerobic sludge material can be established, the stream to be purified comes into contact with the anaerobic microorganisms contained therein. The preferred carrier material is loosely deposited flotation carriers. A type of fluid bed reactor is hereby obtained. It has been found that a good mixing and associated conversion is achieved in comparison with conventional anaerobic systems. A further description of preferred embodiments of such carriers is given in WO 02/096806, the contents of which are considered to be incorporated herein. In particular, the specific description of the carrier material is given herein, with aerobic material settling thereon, as well as a suitable configuration, for example cylindrical with radially extending surfaces. It has been found that this type of carrier material is extremely suitable for having anaerobic sludge material settled thereon.
The desired purification is achieved by introducing the stream to be purified from above into the container and then passing it through the carrier material, with the sludge material on it. This ensures effective purification.
Through the combination of a container in which, preferably loosely cast flotation, carrier material is applied, wherein the distribution system introduces the liquid to be treated from above, a so-called downflow or "downflow" system is provided. This means that no forced settling is necessary with settlers, since the sludge material floats through the carrier material. Hereby an effective and more controllable system is obtained which has proved to be particularly suitable for conversion of already existing containers used for example for conventional aerobic systems.
44
In addition, a downward flow is achieved with the fluid bed of carriers and the introduction of liquid from above. The biogas produced will move upwards. As a result, a "settler" or three-phase separator is not required, so that a cost-efficient implementation of the anaerobic system is realized. Furthermore, it has been found that by using a counter-current in the holder, the effectiveness of the conversion is further improved, and more manageable, so that the process can be operated in a more efficient manner.
The anaerobic conversion produces a biogas, in particular methane, as well as carbon dioxide. By providing a gas roof, in particular a gas roof whose volume is adaptable to the production of the biogas, a desired pressure in the container can be kept within a desired range. Because the biogas produced will move upwards, it is in countercurrent with the effluent to be purified, whereby an improved mixing is achieved.
The gas roof with connecting means 20 is preferably arranged on an existing container. In this way it is possible to provide an already existing container or tank with a gas roof and then use this container as an anaerobic water purification system. The liquid to be treated is hereby purified, resulting in a pure, or at least more pure, water stream and further streams, including sludge and biogas.
The gas roof preferably consists of a gas membrane, which is as it were inflated by the biogas produced. In the presently preferred preferred embodiment, this biogas membrane is provided within an overlying roof material, which is held in position, for example with the aid of an air blower. Such an air blower blows air in between the umbrella roof and the gas membrane. If the anaerobic water purification system according to the invention is out of operation, the biogas membrane will not have to provide any volume for the produced biogas and therefore, for example, rest on a grid placed just above the distributors. Alternatively, it is also possible to provide a fixed umbrella roof, for example in the form of a pointed roof. Also preferably used here is a flexible gas membrane, which is located under this outer roof and provides a flexible volume in the same way.
The connecting means preferably comprise clamping mechanisms wherein the gas membrane is clamped to or on the container. This clamp connection is preferably provided substantially completely gas-tight under the usual process conditions, so that the biogas cannot escape uncontrolled from the flexible biogas volume of the system according to the invention.
In a presently preferred preferred embodiment, the gas roof is provided over a part of an existing container and another part of the existing container is provided for use as a pre-treatment and / or after-treatment container. In particular, an existing container relates to a conventional aerobic water purification with the system according to the invention that is made suitable for an anaerobic water purification system. It has been found that the anaerobic system requires only a part of the volume of the previously aerobic container. This makes it possible to use a significant part of the existing container, namely 2/3 to 4/5 of the volume, for a pre-treatment and / or after-treatment. The remaining part is then used for the anaerobic treatment of the fluid.
66
It is also possible to provide a sub-holder in the holder of a conventional aerobic system. An additional safety buffer is hereby provided so that the process can be operated even more safely.
By preferably utilizing a part of the volume of the previously aerobic container for an anaerobic system, in particular about 20 to 25% proves advantageous in most cases, the same purification capacity can be achieved as with a previously used aerobic system for example. This offers advantages in particular if a larger capacity is required. At that moment a slightly larger volume than this 20 to 25%, for example 25 to 90%, can be utilized for an anaerobic system and the remainder of the volume of the formerly, for example, aerobic container can be used for pre-treatment and / or after-treatment. It has been found that this is particularly advantageous in situations where an alternative approach would require an additional or an extension of an aerobic system. This allows improved purification with increased capacity to be achieved against limited investments, thereby improving overall process performance, both from a process and cost perspective perspective.
In an advantageous preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the distribution system comprises a supply, a number of distributors and a flushing connection.
By making use of a number of distributors, the liquid to be treated can be distributed over substantially the entire upper surface of the liquid in the container. This ensures that a good distribution is achieved and a good flow of the anaerobic sludge bed is achieved. This improves the conversion of the organic material into water and residual material to the biogas. By providing a flushing connection, the supply system can be effectively cleaned with the distributors. This prevents, among other things, 5 blockages and guarantees proper operation.
Distribution vessels are preferably provided in the direction of flow of the supplied liquid before and / or after the distributors. Such distribution or buffer vessels, or "headers", form a kind of central supply buffer for distributing the flow among the distributors. By placing these at the front of the distributors, a good distribution over all distributors is achieved. By preferably placing an additional (collection) vessel after the dividers, an improved cleaning of the supply system can be realized. For example, an additional cleaning connection is used for this. This cleaning is carried out, for example, with water, optionally provided with a number of auxiliary substances. Use is made here of flushing and / or flushing back the pipes.
In an advantageous preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the system comprises a discharge system for treated liquid arranged in or near the bottom of the container.
By providing a drainage system at the bottom, the downward flow, or the "downflow" character of the system, is realized. Such a drain system can for instance comprise a central opening or bin from which a drain line drains the effluent. If desired, it is also possible to provide several discharge points, for example in the form of an opening in a container, optionally each with separate discharge pipes. Any so-called preferred flows can be influenced and preferably prevented by the drain system.
88
In an alternative preferred embodiment, the discharge system comprises a pipework, for example a hose, preferably a flexible hose, which is provided with a number of openings. The advantage of this is that such a piping, for example a flexible hose, can be laid down as it were on the bottom of a container, in particular an already existing container, for example previously used from as a conventional aerobic system. This ensures that a drainage option exists substantially over the entire bottom surface. Clogging of openings is also prevented, since discharge of effluent is possible through several openings. An additional advantage is that in the case of a conversion from an aerobic to an anaerobic system according to the invention, such a drainage system can be realized in a relatively simple manner by placing such a piping on the bottom of a container.
In a further advantageous preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the discharge system comprises a riser.
By providing a riser in the discharge system, it is achieved that a guaranteed liquid level is present in the container when the system is in use. This means that the system is not dependent on a single valve that, in the event of a failure, leads to an uncontrolled level in the container and / or to the draining of the container. The effluent 30 is again raised to a specific height through the riser, after which the effluent is further discharged. This effluent is pushed up in the riser by the pressure of the liquid column in the container. This pressure is increased in the container by the pressure 9 caused by the biogas. In practice, this means that the liquid level in the riser will be slightly higher than the liquid level in the container. This provides a secure system.
The riser preferably comprises a height-adjustable outlet. By providing a height-adjustable drain, the liquid level in the container can be effectively varied within a range.
Hereby it is possible to adjust the outlet so that the pressure in the biogas compartment is checked.
If the biogas pressure rises too high, it will further push down the liquid level in the container, whereby more liquid is discharged. This further increases the safety of the system.
Preferably the biogas produced is used for energy generation. Furthermore, this generated energy is preferably used to drive the required pumps in the system, whereby an energetically self-sufficient purification system is obtained. This makes it possible, for example, to place such a system at any desired location since there is no great dependence on a fixed electricity supply. A generator may be used to start the process.
In a further advantageous preferred embodiment, the system comprises a gas distribution system for produced biogas and / or external gas, for example the inert N2, which can be introduced into the container from below.
By using the gas distribution system it is possible to realize an additional mixing of the carrier material with the sludge material continuously or periodically. This avoids, for example, that "blind spots" and / or preferred currents can arise in the container. This further increases the overall effectiveness of the purification process. Furthermore, a countercurrent with the liquid is effected from underneath the introduction of the gas, whereby mixing is further improved.
The invention also relates to a conversion kit for converting an existing container to an anaerobic water purification system as described above, wherein the kit comprises a gas roof for at least a part of the existing container, connecting means for connecting the gas roof to the container , supply and discharge means for the liquid to be treated and the treated and the biogas, and carrier material, preferably loosely deposited, on which sludge material can settle.
Such a conversion kit offers the same effects and advantages as previously described for the anaerobic water purification system. It has been found that the kit according to the invention can be used effectively for converting conventional aerobic systems to an anaerobic system according to the invention. To this end, such a holder is provided with a gas roof, preferably with a flexible gas membrane, by making use of connecting means, comprising for instance a clamping mechanism. Supply lines and discharge lines hereby ensure that the required flows of liquid to be treated and discharge of the effluent are realized.
In addition, use is preferably made of separately deposited carrier material on which biomass can settle.
The invention furthermore also relates to a method for anaerobically treating liquid, the method comprising: - applying a gas roof to a container and a drain for the biogas; - providing on or in the container with: - at least one supply line and a distribution system for distributing the liquid over the container from above; - an amount of carrier material; and - a discharge line for carrying processed liquid from below from the holder, the discharge line being operatively connected to a riser for keeping the holder filled in use.
Such a method for treating, and in particular purifying, a liquid, in particular a waste water stream, offers the same effects and advantages as described above for the anaerobic water purification system and the conversion kit. In the embodiment shown, a discharge line 44 is provided on bottom 6 coupled to tray 45, optionally provided with a number of openings 46 for discharging effluent from container 4. This effluent is fed via riser 48, in which a flexible outlet 20 or overflow 50 is provided in the shown embodiment, via reservoir 52 to outlet 54. The height difference h is adjustable via outlet or overflow 50, the height difference relating to the height of the liquid level in the riser 48 and the height of the liquid 16 in the holder 4. Outer part 14 is preferably kept under tension by using an air blower which blows air into the gap between outer part 13 and membrane 12 (not shown). Liquid 16 contains carrier material 56 of a preferably plastic material, the size of which is preferably at most a few centimeters, or even smaller, on which sludge material 58 can be present.
5 Dragers 56 zijn in meer detail beschreven in WO 02/096806.Carriers 56 are described in more detail in WO 02/096806.
Systeem 60 is verder voorzien van een aantal leidingen 72.An anaerobic water purification system 60 (Figure 2) comprises a container or tank 62, for example originating from a conventional aerobic system that is being converted. To this end, part of the contents of tank 62 is utilized as an anaerobic system 64, in which, in the embodiment shown, further parts 66, 68 are used for pre-treatment or after-treatment of the process flows. The anaerobic system 64 is provided with gas roof 70. System 60 is further provided with a number of pipes 72.
A conversion process 74 (Figure 3) from a previously conventional aerobic system 76 requires determining the required volumes and materials in a first dimensioning step 78.
