Description

P94150NL00
Title: Waste collecting device and method.
The invention relates to a waste collecting device. The invention further relates to a method for collecting waste. The invention especially relates to a waste collecting device and method for collecting waste at people’s gatherings, such as festivals, exhibitions, fairs, sports events and the like.
5 Littering is one of the main problems during gatherings of groups of people. Not only can littering lead to unpleasant appearances, it can lead to health and safety risks for participants to these gatherings and it will lead to costs for cleaning of the area at which the gathering has taken place, during and after said gathering. Littering can for example be bottles, cans, bags, 10 wrappers, food stuff, cigarette butts and the like, or any other materials and products left by people gathering.
It is known to provide waste baskets for collecting waste, in order to prevent littering. These waste baskets can for example be plastic containers, having a lid, which can for example be provided with wheels such as known as 15 Kliko® containers. There containers are made of plastic and are opaque. In other embodiments the waste containers can be permanently provided and can for example be made of mesh materials. A bag such as a plastic bag can be provided in the container, such that waste dumped in such bag can easily be removed by lifting the bag from the container wand replacing it for an empty 20 bag. These collecting devices are costly in manufacturing, maintenance and use. Moreover, they cannot be used in a flexible manner, especially not when permanently positioned.
In a third embodiment a waste collecting device can be provided by a relatively stiff ring, mounted in a substantially horizontal position to a post, 25 from which ring a bag can be suspended, such that a neck portion of the bag is held open by the ring. A lid can be mounted to the ring, for closing the open neck area. This device can have the advantage that relatively little material is 2 necessary for the ring. A disadvantage however is that the post is to be fixed permanently to the ground, making the system inflexible. Should the ring be mounted to a movable support, then the material necessary is increased, whereas storage and transport, was well as cleaning and maintenance of these 5 devices becomes cumbersome and costly.
An aim of the present disclosure is to provide an alternative waste collecting device. Another aim of the present disclosure is to provide for a waste collecting device that is relatively easy and flexible in use. A further aim is to provide for a waste collecting device which is especially suitable for 10 temporary use at areas where people’s gatherings are to be held.
An aim of the present disclosure is to provide for a waste collecting device enabling mounting of a device at different locations, using simple suspension means, wherein the devices take up little space when stored before use. Another aim is to provide for a waste collecting device that is disposable, 15 preferably at least partly recyclable.
An aim of the present disclosure is to provide for an alternative method for collecting waste. An aim is to provide for a method for collecting waste, wherein waste collecting devices are suspended in a people gathering area, which devices can be filled with litter or waste, and can be disposed of 20 with waste contained therein.
In an aspect of the present disclosure a waste collecting device is provided, comprising an at least partly flexible bag with a neck portion and a suspension system. The suspension system comprises a collar element for opening the neck portion and a suspension element connected to the collar 25 element and/or the neck portion.
In an aspect of the present disclosure a waste collecting device mounted to a support, wherein a collar element is tied to the support by a suspension element, such that the collar element forms a substantially ring shaped element extending away from the support, carrying the bag at least 3 partly. The collar element can be integrated in the bag at least partly, for example extending through a seam or loops at a neck portion of the bag.
In an aspect of the present disclosure a method for collecting waste, is described, especially but not exclusively using a waste collecting device 5 according to the disclosure, wherein a collar element is provided, extending through a seam part of a bag, and is formed into a substantially ring element or shape and is tied to a support, such that the collar element forms an insertion opening for the bag, extending away from the support. The seam part may be provided by for example loops, hooks or the like, or a tunnel like seam.
10 In elucidation of the present invention embodiments of devices and methods, as well as parts thereof, shall be discussed hereafter, with reference to the drawings, which show:
Fig. 1 schematically in perspective view a waste collecting device, in suspended position; 15 Fig. 2 a collar element for a waste collecting device, in straight position;
Fig. 3 a collar element according to fig. 2, in partly bent position;
Fig. 4 a collar element of fig. 2 and 3, in ring shaped position, for opening a neck portion of a bag; 20 Fig. 5 a waste collecting device in closed position;
Fig. 6 schematically in perspective view a barrier element for suspension of a waste collecting device;
Fig. 7 A and B schematically a device of the present description, suspended from a support, in partially cross sectional side view and top view, 25 with alternative suspension element positions; and
Fig. 7C schematically in cross section a support element and part of a band of a collar element, with a suspension element.
In these drawings and description embodiments of a device and method, as well as parts thereof are shown, by way of example only. These 30 embodiments should by no means be considered as limited the scope of the 4 invention in any way. In this description the same or similar elements or features have the same or similar reference signs. Waste is in this description to be understood as including at least items like bottles, cans, bags, wrappers, food stuff, cigarette butts and the like, or any other materials and products left 5 by people gathering. Especially disposable products can be comprised in waste.
In this description waste collecting has to be understood as at least including but not limited to providing for a device into which waste can be disposed by people or the act of throwing waste into a device designed therefore. A bag has to be understood as meaning at least but not limited to an 10 at least partly flexible container, such as a flexible plastic bag, which may be foldable and can be sealed into a bag shape from a foil sheet or tube, or any other suitable manner. A bag may have any suitable size or shape, for example substantially rectangular when flattened, and for example between 10 and 100 litre, for example between 15 and 200 litre. A bag is preferably made of a 15 suitable recyclable and/or biodegradable material, such as plastic material. A bag can be disposable together with the waste contained therein. A bag can be provided with means for closing the bag over and/or around the waste contained therein.
In this description ring or ringshaped element has to be understood 20 as any structure formed by or with a collar element or the like for opening and/or keeping open a throw in opening of a bag. A ring or ring shaped element can be a substantially closed loop. A ring or ring shaped element can have any shape or form, such as but not limited to round, oblong, square, rectangular, triangular, multiangular, polygonal or any such shape, as long as it forms or 25 defines an opening into the interior of a bag.
In this description a support for supporting a device can be but is not limited to poles, fences, posts, walls, barrier elements or the like or other suitable elements. A support can be fixed or portable.
Fig. 1 shows schematically, in perspective view, a waste collecting 30 device 1 comprising a bag 2 with a neck portion 3 and a suspension system 4.
5
The suspension system can comprise a collar element 5 for opening the neck portion 3 and a suspension element 6 connected to the collar element 5 and/or the neck portion 3. In this embodiment the bag 2, especially the neck portion 3 is provided with a seam 7 forming a tunnel 8 extending around at least part of 5 the neck portion 3. The tunnel 8 can extend continuously or can be comprised by a number of tunnel elements or hoops or the like, through which the collar element 5 can extend, like a belt of a pair of trousers. An opening 9 can be provided between two opposite ends 10A, B of the tunnel 8 or between two tunnel elements or hoops.
10 The bag 2 is in this embodiment made of plastic sheet material, for example in a known way by forming a tube which is sealed and cut into bags. Other methods can also be used for forming of such bag 2. The bag preferably is made of an at least partly transparent plastic and/or at least partly made transparent, such that at least part and preferably about all of its content can 15 be seen through the bag 2, especially when this is only partly filled. This enables a check of the content without having to look into the open neck area of the bag and without having to go through the content, for example by hand. This allows to at least visually check the bag, for example for explosives, contraband or other undesirable content, increasing the safety, for example of 20 people gathering near the device or devices. Moreover, this can for example prevent smuggling contraband onto or from the area.
As can be seen from fig. 7 the device 1, especially the bag 2 can be suspended from a support 11 by tying the collar element 5 to the support 11. To this end the suspension element or elements 6 can be connected to the 25 collar element 5 and for example tied to the support 11, which may, as indicated, for example be a pole or post or such substantially vertically extending support element, a fence or beam or similar, substantially horizontally extending support, or different support elements 11. Preferably the suspension element or elements 6 can extending through and/or around 30 the collar element 5 at or in the opening 9.
6
The collar element 5 in embodiments forms a ring 12, which has a sufficient stiffness to keep open the neck portion 3 of the bag 2 suspended from the collar element 5, such that a throw-in opening 13 is provided. The opening 13 can for example have any suitable shape and size. The opening 13 can for 5 example be substantially circular, and can have any suitable size. The size of the opening 13 can for example be such that the opening area is formed by or comparable with a circle having a diameter of between 10 and 50 cm, such as for example between 15 and 45 cm. In an embodiment the diameter can be about 38 cm. In embodiments the area of the opening 13 can be settable by 10 setting the collar element 5, for example as will be discussed hereafter. Setting the collar element 5 can be understood as including the possibility of amending the opening 13 by pulling the collar element more or less taut and preferably fixating it is such position.
In fig. 2 an example of a collar element 5 is shown, in substantially 15 flat condition. The collar element 5 has a substantially belt shape, comprising a band 14 with a first end 15 and an opposite second end 16. The first end 15 comprises a support element 17, whereas the opposite end 16 comprises an insertion element 18. The collar element can for example be cut from a plastic plate, or can be formed in another way, for example by injection moulding, 20 extrusion and die cutting or any other suitable manner. The band 14 can have a mid section 19 between the support element 17 and the insertion element 18. The mid section 19 can for example have a height H and a thickness t. The height H is substantially larger than the thickness t, for example more than ten times, more especially more than 20 times. In embodiments the height can 25 for example be more than 40 times the thickness t, such as for example about 50 times. The thickness t can for example be between 0.5 and 5 mm, such as for example between 0.5 and 2.5 mm. In an embodiment the thickness t can be about 1 mm. The height H can for example be between 25 and 100 mm, such as for example between 25 and 75 mm. In embodiments the height can for 30 example be between 35 and 65 mm, such as for example about 50 mm.
7
The support element 17 can for example be substantially square or rectangular or another suitable shape. The support element 17 can have a height Hs, parallel to the height H, which is larger than the height H, for example at least 1,5 times said height H. In an embodiment the height Hs can 5 be about twice the height H of the mid section 19. In an embodiment the height Hs can be about 90 mm and the height H about 50 mm. In an embodiment the support element 17 and the mid section 19 can have a central line L - L extending in the longitudinal direction of the collar element 5, mid between opposite edges in height direction. In other embodiments the support 10 element 17 can be moved up or down with respect to the line A - A, making the end portion 16 asymmetrical with respect to the line A - A. The support element 17 can be provided with at least one first opening 20 through which the insertion element 18 can be inserted, such that the band 14 can be pulled through said first opening 20. The opening 20 can for example be substantially 15 slit shaped, having a length direction extending substantially parallel to the height H and Hs, having a width w, which can for example be substantially equal to or slightly larger than the thickness t of the band 14, especially of the mid section 19. The opening 20 can have a height Hsiit, which can in an example be about the same height or slightly larger than the band 14, 20 especially the mid section 19. In the embodiment shown the support element 17 has two substantially parallel slit shaped openings 20, spaced apart. The insertion element 18 can be inserted through a first one of the two openings 20 and then through the second opening 20.
In the support element 17 at least one second opening 21 can be 25 provided, for example an opening 21 smaller than the or each first opening 20. The or each second opening 21 can for example be substantially circular and have a diameter of for example but not limited to between 1 and 10 mm, for example about 4 - 6 mm, such as about 5 mm. The or each second opening 21 can be sized to thread a suspension element 6 through. A suspension element 30 can for example be a tie-wrap, binding strap, hook, screw or bolt or the like. In 8 embodiments there can be at least two such second openings 21, spaced apart from each other and from the or each first opening 20. In the embodiment shown in fig. 2 two pairs of second openings 21 are provided. One of the pairs comprises two second openings 21 above each other, situated between the two 5 first opening 20, whereas the other pair comprises two openings next to each other, in the position shown in fig. 2. In the embodiment shown in fig. 2 a fifth second opening can be provided between the second openings 21 of both pairs.
The insertion portion 18 can for example be substantially arrow or triangular shaped, providing for a pointed end or apex 22, for example on the 10 line A - A. The end 22 can make insertion of the band 14 into and through the first openings 20 easier. The height Hend of the insertion end 18 can be slightly larger than the height Hsiit, and slightly larger that the height H, such that after insertion into the slit 20 removal is prevented by the insertion end 18. The collar element 5 can have a length L depending on the desired maximal 15 diameter of the opening 13. In an embodiment the length L can be between 0.75 and 2 m, for example between 0.75 and 1.5 m. In an embodiment the length L can be between 1 and 1.5 m, for example about 1.2 to 1.3 m.
The band 14 can be provided with a series of third openings 23, for example positioned at regular intervals I along a length portion of the band 14 20 near the insertion end 18. In an embodiment the third openings 23 can be position near or on the line A - A. The spacing I between the third openings 23 can for example be similar to or, preferably equal to, the spacing between the second openings 22 on or near the line A - A on the support element 17. The spacing and positioning of the third openings 23 can be such that when the 25 band 14 is pulled through the opening or openings 20 of the support element 17, at least one and preferably at least two third openings 23 can be brought is coinciding or overlapping position with at least one and preferably a corresponding number of second openings 21 of the support element, such that one or more suspension elements 6 can be inserted through the openings 21, 30 23, as can for example be seen in fig. 4 and 7. This provides for a good support 9 of the support element 17 and thus of the device 1, and at the same time prevents tautening or releasing of the collar element 5 when suspended. Only after removal of the suspension elements from the openings 21, 23 can the collar element be rearranged, for example tautened, as will be described. Being 5 able to adjust the size of the opening can be advantageous, for example for adaptation to weather conditions, such as wind or rain, or in order to allow only specific sized items to be disposed into said bag.
As is shown in fig. 2, the band 14, especially the mid section 19 can be provided at one or both opposite longitudinal edges 24 with ratching 10 elements 25, such as teeth, especially in a section near the support element 17. These ratch elements 25 are preferably positioned such that when the band is pulled through the opening or openings 20 as far as at least one of the elements 25 passing through at least one opening 20 the at least one element 25 will ratch, especially hook behind a edge portion of the opening 20, thus 15 preventing the band 14 from being pulled back easily or at all, without damaging the element or elements 25 and/or the support element 17. Thus at the end of the waste collecting use of the bag 2 the neck portion 3 or opening 13 can be reduced or even closed by pulling the band 14 further through the opening or openings 20, in the direction F as shown in fig. 3 and 4, preferably 20 until the ratch element or elements hook behind the edge portion or portions of the openings 20, as discussed, keeping the opening 13 in the reduced or even closed size and position, as shown in fig. 5. Preferably the ratch elements are only provided in a section 25 near the support element 17, for example over half of the length L of the band 14 extending from the support element 17, or 25 less, for example about a third of the length, for example over a length free of third openings 23. In such configuration adjusting the size of the opening 13 will still be possible by choosing the relevant openings 21, 23 to coincide, whereas increasing the size of the opening will be prevented once the band 14 has been pulled further, ratching the elements 25 behind one or more edge 30 portions of an opening 20. Thus the neck portion can be tautened at the end of 10 use but adjusted during suspension, if desired, once the suspension elements are removed. The ratch elements are examples of locking elements for locking the collar element in a desired position.
As can be seen in fig. 3 and 4, the insertion element 18 can be 5 weaved into and through the openings 20, and pulled further in the direction F, until the desired size of the opening 13 is reached, as is for example shown in fig. 4. Then at least one suspension element 6 is inserted through at least some of the overlapping openings 21, 23 and tied to a support 11. Depending on the support and the desired position of the opening 13 a suitable set of 10 openings 20 and/or 23 can be used for suspension of the device 1. In fig. 7A a side view is shown of a device suspended from a horizontal bar 26 as support element 11, whereas in fig. 7B the device is shown suspended from a vertical post 27 as support element 11. In both embodiments a tie-wrap 28 is used as suspension element for forming part of the suspension system. However, any 15 other suitable suspension element 6 could be used. In fig. 7C schematically in cross section the support element 17 is shown, with the band 14 woven through the openings 20. Openings 21 and 23 are shown in overlapping position, a suspension element 6 such as a tie-wrap extending through said openings 21, 23. In fig. 7A the tie-wrap as suspension element 6 is wound 20 around the bar 26 and fed through an upper and middle second opening 21, and one third opening 23, and tightened, such that the support element 17 is pulled against the bar 26. This may slightly deform the support element 17, which may increase stiffness of the ring and thus improve the suspension and orientation of the ring and opening 13. In embodiments the support element 17 25 may extend well below the openings 20, 21, 23, such that improved support can be offered by said portion against the support element 11, if available in such position. In fig. 7B the suspension element 6 such as a tie-wrap 28 is shown extending in a substantially horizontal position, through a pair of second openings and corresponding third openings 23 and tightened around 11 the post 27, thus locking the collar element 5 and suspending the device 1 in a desired position.
As can be seen in for example fig. 1 and 7, there can be one or more openings 29 in the bag 2, for example near a bottom portion 30, i.e. a portion 5 30 at an end of the bag 2 opposite the neck portion 3, which will in normal use be at or near a lowest point of the bag 2. Through such opening or openings 29 moisture such as water, for example rain, can leave the bag 2. In an alternative embodiment the bag can be made partly or entirely of a mesh material or be perforated or the like. Additionally or alternatively such 10 openings 29 can be used for providing one or more further suspension elements such as but not limited to tie-wraps 29, for tying the lower portion 30 of the bag to a support too, further supporting the device and preventing the bag 2 from being blown away by wind or the like.
Fig. 6 shows, by way of example, an embodiment of a support 15 element 11, in the form of a barrier element 31 suitable for example for crowd control, restricting access, demarcation of areas or the like, adapted for use with a waste collecting device 1 according to the description. In this embodiment the barrier element has been provided with feet 32 and a fencing element 33 with vertical bars 34 within a frame 35 supported by the feet 32. In 20 one or more positions, for example three positions as shown, between the bars 34 a support element 11 can be provided, such as a plate 36 provided with openings 37 corresponding with for example second openings 21 of the support element 17. Thus the support element 17 of a device 1 can easily be tied against such plate 36, by any suitable means, such as for example by one or 25 more tie-wraps 28 or the like suspension elements 6, wherein the plate 36 can provide ample support for the support element 17.
Waste collecting devices 1 according to this disclosure, such as specifically described or comparable devices can be sued as follows.
In preparing an area, for example for a people’s gathering such as a 30 demonstration or festival, concert, (sports)event or any other gathering, a 12 suitable number of bags 2, provided with a collar element 5, can be provided to the area and suspended from appropriate supporting elements 11, such as bars 26 or posts 27, barriers 31 or any other suitable means. The collar elements 5 can be brought into the ring shape by feeding the band through the opening 20 5 or openings 20, until the desired size of the opening 13 is obtained and suitable openings 21 and/or 23 are overlapping or at least in position. Then one or more suspension elements can be fed through one or more openings 21, 23 and/or around the collar element 5, with which the bag 2 can be suspended, with an opening 13 ready for receiving waste. The bags 2 can be suspended for example 10 well prior to the gathering, and can be checked, at least visually, for undesirable content, such as explosives, contraband or the like. The suspension element or elements 6 will prevent that the bags are taken away or for example closed prematurely. When a bag 2 is full or after the gathering, the bag 2 can be closed containing the waste, by releasing the suspension 15 element or elements 6 and tautening the collar element 5 as described, into the position as shown in fig. 5 after which the bag can be disposed of. In embodiments the devices 1 can be suspended in such position that the bottom portion 30 touches and preferably is supported by the ground or such supporting element, for relieving part of the weight of the bag 2 from the collar 20 element 5.
As can for example be seen in fig. 1 and 2, the bag 2 and/or collar element 5 can be provided with information, such as but not limited to prints, advertisements and the like, which can be commercial and/or non commercial. In embodiments the information can be about an event or a supplier of the 25 devices 1, can be lettering and/or logos, can contain product information such as material, can be identification information of the device for example for tracking and tracing, or any other information. The bag 2 can for example be made of Polyethylene, such as MDPE or LDPE, PET, preferably recycled PET or other suitable plastics. The collar element 5 can for example be made of 30 Polyethylene, such as MDPE or LDPE, PET, preferably recycled PET or other 13 suitable plastics. The plastics of the collar element and bag are preferably recyclable together and can be the same. The collar element 5 and/or the bag 2 can be coded, for example by colour, for indicating intended types of waste to be dispensed in said bag 2, for example for separate recycling of plastic, paper 5 and other materials or any such separate waste streams.
In embodiments the collar element can be provided with one or more hinge elements, for example thinner, more flexible portions, such that the collar element 5 can be folded for storage and transport, and unfolded for forming the ring and supporting the bag 2.
10 The present disclosure is by no means limited by the embodiments shown and described specifically, by way of example. Many modifications thereof are possible within the scope of the present disclosure, including all combinations or parts of the embodiments described.
In embodiments the suspension elements can be integrated with the 15 collar element and/or the bag, for example by tie-wraps integrally formed with the support element 17. In embodiments at least a tie-wrap can be mounted to the support element such that it can be fed through any suitable opening or set of openings 21, 23, in a desired direction. In embodiments the support element can be made without the first openings 20, the insertion element 18 being fed 20 over the support element and suspension elements being fed through openings 21, 23 for restricting or even preventing size amendments of the collar element 5 or opening 13. In embodiments there can be two or more supporting elements, for example side-by side mounting to one or more supporting elements 11, which can for example provide for a different shape of opening 13, 25 such as a substantially oblong opening 13. In stead of by a seam or loops or the like elements the bag 2 can be suspended form the collar element 5 in a different manner, for example by clips, Velcro, adhesive or the like. For closing the bag 2 after use in stead of pulling the collar element taut, as described, the ring element can be pressed flat and provided with appropriate clamping 30 means or the like for keeping it in such flattened, opening 13 closing state. In 14 embodiments the collar element can be provided such that it can be clipped into a desired size and/or form, for example by cooperating fingers and openings which can be forced into engagement, either permanent or non permanent. In embodiments the support element and/or insertion element can 5 be designed differently or be left out.
