Description
The invention relates to a method for controlling sedimentation in a tidal water basin, in particular a salt marsh, salt marsh or mudflats.
Salt marshes, salt marshes and mud flats make an important contribution to the well-being and prosperity of coastal areas around the world. The ecological value of these tidal areas is high, they form important nurseries and growing areas for fish, shellfish and shrimps and they contribute to safety against flooding from the sea (the so-called "climate buffers"). The rise in sea level is a major threat to the continued existence of salt marshes, salt marshes and mud flats. The rise in sea level is naturally offset by the deposition of sand and sludge during the tidal movement of seawater. A further and accelerated rise in sea level means that more sand and sludge must be deposited in order to maintain these areas.
Two techniques already exist to allow salt marshes, salt marshes or mud flats to grow relatively rapidly, namely (i) the direct application of sand or sludge and (ii) land reclamation or salt marsh works. Both existing techniques, however, have their limitations.
The erection and stimulation of climate buffers by directly applying sediment to the desired location leads to the raising of existing salt marshes, salt marshes and mud flats, or to the creation of new areas. A disadvantage of this is the harmful effect on the environment, because all nature present on site is buried under the sediment and the recovery often takes several years.
22
In addition, the promotion of sedimentation in salt marshes, salt marshes and on tidal flats has been going on for many years by carrying out land reclamation or salt marsh works: the creation of dams and the digging of trenches. These are generally extremely laborious methods that have major consequences for the landscape, because the structure of the dams and trenches continues to dominate the landscape.
The invention now has for its object to provide a method with which the deposition of sand and sludge can be controlled such that salt marshes, salt marshes and mud flats are maintained, even when the sea level rises faster than normal. This method should be free of the disadvantages associated with the older techniques described above. According to the invention this is achieved by influencing the inflow of water at rising tide and / or the outflow of the water at falling tide, all such that the outflow speed of the water differs from the inflow speed thereof. By creating asymmetry in the incoming and outgoing water flows, a net import or export of sediment can be achieved because sediment material entrained in the water has more or less time to settle than would be the case with symmetrical water flows.
Incidentally, it should be borne in mind that both the inflow speed and the outflow speed during the tide vary between zero - in each case at the transition of the tide - and a high speed almost halfway through the tide. Where reference is made herein to a flow rate, an average or other representative value for the speed is therefore meant.
When the outflow of the water is influenced in such a way that the outflow velocity is smaller than the inflow velocity, relatively more sand and sludge remain behind, and salt marshes, salt marshes and mud flats can be raised to cope with rising sea levels.
On the other hand, it is also conceivable that the inflow of the water is influenced in such a way that the inflow speed is smaller than the outflow speed. This limits sedimentation, which may sometimes be desirable for the conservation of the natural value of salt marshes.
The outflow or the inflow 10 is preferably influenced by - at least temporarily - increasing the flow resistance of at least a part of the catchment area. Such an increase in resistance to outflow or inflow is relatively easy to achieve. For example, the flow resistance can be increased by erecting a barrier.
For optimum effectiveness of this measure, it is preferable that this barrier is erected in a channel in the river basin. Thus, the largest possible part of the outgoing or incoming water flow is influenced by the presence of the barrier.
In order to achieve the greatest possible asymmetry between the incoming and outgoing flows, use can be made of a dynamic or active barrier which can be moved between a rest position in which it does not or hardly influences the inflow or outflow, and an operating position in which it at least partially restrains the outflow or inflow.
When the barrier is moved from its rest position to its operating position and vice versa by the outflowing or inflowing water, an automatic control is obtained in a simple manner.
44
On the other hand, it is possible to design the barrier asymmetrically. A passive or static solution is therefore sufficient.
The invention also relates to a device with which the above described method can be carried out. Such a device for controlling sedimentation in a tidal water basin comprises, according to the invention, means for influencing the influx of water at rising tide and / or the outflow of the water at falling tide, which flow-influencing means are adapted to make the water outflow speed differ from its inflow speed.
In a first embodiment of the invention, the barrier is asymmetrical. This can be achieved in a constructively simple manner if the barrier has a corrugated or saw-tooth surface.
In another variant of the device according to the invention, the barrier is movable between a rest position in which it does not or hardly influences the inflow or outflow, and an operating position in which it at least partially blocks the outflow or inflow.
A structurally simple and robust design of the device is achieved when the barrier is pivotable between its rest position and its operating position.
This is particularly important because the barrier is placed in a marine environment, has been subjected to considerable natural forces and must continue to function reliably under all circumstances, while the possibilities for maintenance are limited because the barrier is in a naturally inaccessible 30 location will be established.
Verdere voorkeursuitvoeringen van de regelinrichting volgens de uitvinding vormen de materie van de volgconclusies 21 tot 26.Further preferred embodiments of the control device according to the invention form the subject matter of the subclaims 21 to 26.

The invention is now elucidated on the basis of a number of examples, wherein reference is made to the appended drawing, in which corresponding parts are indicated with reference numerals which are each time increased by 10, and in which:

66
The method for controlling the deposition of sand and sludge on the bottom B of a tidal water basin, such as a salt marsh, salt marsh, is based on influencing the inflow of water W at rising tide and / or outflow of the water W at the outgoing tide. The purpose of this influence is to ensure that the speed at which the water flows in w (according to the arrow I in Fig. 1) differs from the speed at which it flows out again (arrow 0 in Fig. 2). In the example shown, the outflow speed is made smaller than the inflow speed, so that sediment material S present in the water W has relatively more time to settle on the bottom B than if the outflow speed were equal to the inflow speed. In this way the salt marsh, salt marsh or mud flats are raised.
In the example shown, the outflow is influenced by temporarily increasing the flow resistance of a part of the catchment area. To this end, a barrier 1 is erected during the going tide, or in any case during part of that period. This barrier 1 is shown schematically here as a plate pivotable about a lying pivot axis 2, which in turn is mounted in a foundation element 3 in the bottom B. The barrier 1 becomes under the influence of the inflowing water W (arrow I) and the force of gravity during rising tide is forced to a rest position, in which it lies substantially flat on the bottom B and thus has little or no influence on the inflow (fig. 1). When the tide changes and the outflow (arrow O) starts, the barrier is forced upwards by the water flowing past W 30 to its operating position. In this erected position, the barrier at least partially blocks the outflow, thereby delaying it. Thus, the 7 sediment material S entrained in the water W has relatively more time to settle on the bottom B.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the barrier is formed by a door 11, which is pivotable about a standing axis 12 (Fig. 3). This pivot axis 12 is again mounted in a foundation element 13. In the example shown, the barrier 11 is placed in a trench G, so that as much of the incoming or outgoing water mass is affected as possible. At the location of the barrier 11, the bottom B and the sides Z of the trench G are covered with a layer of concrete 14 or other material, so that the trench G is channeled. Hereby is prevented that the channel G, in addition to the barrier, further wears out and the effectiveness of the barrier 11 for influencing the flow rate of the water W decreases over time.
In the example shown, the barrier or door 11 pivots under the influence of the inflowing water I to its rest position (Fig. 4), in which it extends parallel to the flow and therefore does not generate any resistance. In the case of discharged water, the door 11 pivots to its operating position (Fig. 5) transversely of the outgoing water flow O. To retain the door 11 in that position, a stop member 15 is provided which projects out of the foundation element 13. Incidentally, 25 these figures show the highest water level as H, and the lowest water level as L. furthermore, it can be seen here how the coating layer 14 has inflow and outflow ends 17, 18 inclined on the bottom B, as a result of which it conducts the flow well.
In the example shown, the door 11 is partially permeable to water in that it is provided with a number of openings 16. By a suitable choice of the number of openings 16, their dimensions and their placement, the desired increase in the flow resistance can be set . Other configurations than those shown here are of course also conceivable.
The design of the barrier 11 is determined by the expected loads and by environmental influences such as floating debris in the form of plant debris and possible growth of organisms such as shellfish, barnacles and algae, which like to attach to hard surfaces. Due to the circumstances under which the barrier must function and the limited possibilities for maintenance, the design thereof must be very robust. The number of moving parts must be limited and the moving parts that are there must be well protected. The construction should preferably catch as little dirt as possible and preferably be self-cleaning using the present tidal flow. The dimensions, for example of the openings 16, must be adapted to the presence of shells and barnacles.
The embodiments of the flow influencing means described above are dynamic or active, in the sense that the barrier 1, 11 is movable. However, it is also conceivable to select a static or passive embodiment, in which the barrier 21 is fixedly arranged in the trench G (Fig. 6). The barrier is herein designed asymmetrically, such that the flow resistance at the inflow (arrow I) is smaller than at the outflow (arrow O). in the example shown, the barrier 21 is formed by a layer or slab of concrete 24 on the bottom B of the trench G, which is asymmetrically profiled on the upper side. The profile of the layer 24 here forms a saw tooth, with relatively flat flanks 27 on the inflow side and relatively steeper flanks 28 on the outflow side. Due to the difference in the angle of inclination of the flanks 27, 28, the resistance of the concrete layer or plate 9 24 with outflow of water W is greater than with inflow.
Because in this embodiment the barrier 21 has no moving parts at all, it is very robust and maintenance-free.
As stated, the barrier 11 can be placed in a trench G through which the water flows in and out of the basin. Fig. 7 shows a plan for such a placement. Part of the 10 Oosterschelde in the Netherlands has been shown there, with salt marshes K that are located outside dikes D and protect them against high water. In the plan shown, barriers 1, 11, 21 according to the invention have been placed in different main channels G of these salt marshes K, which delay the outflow 15 and thereby promote sedimentation. Thus, even when the sea level rises, the dikes D are permanently protected by the salt marshes K.
30Although the invention has been explained above on the basis of a number of examples, it will be clear that it is not limited thereto. Instead of the barriers shown, other provisions could be provided to promote the asymmetry between inflow and outflow. Furthermore, the movement of the dynamic barriers could be effected differently than shown and described here, for example by sliding instead of pivoting. The shape and dimensions of the barriers, both in the dynamic and static versions, could also be varied. The scope of the invention is therefore solely determined by the following claims. 30
