Description

Title: Trailer for the transportation of e.g. a motor bike
DESCRIPTION
The invention refers to a trailer, arranged for the transportation of an object, in particular a motor bike.
One aim of the present invention is to provide a compact, light, stable and easily stowable trailer, in particular arranged for transporting a motor bike or another object. Another aim is to provide a trailer which can be lowered and lifted in order to facilitate loading and unloading such object.
According to the invention the trailer comprises a frame including a draw bar for connecting the trailer to a vehicle, and a ramp extending mainly perpendicular to the direction of travel of the trailer, and a (at least one) pair of wheels connected to the frame via one axle (common for both wheels) or two axles (one individual axle a wheel).
The axle or axles preferably is a suspension axle or are suspension axles respectively. According to the invention the (common) axle or at least one (individual) axle respectively is connected to the frame via a pivoting point located away from one wheel (in the common axle configuration) or the wheel (of the relevant individual axle) respectively, and wherein lowering means are provided, arranged for enabling lowering and lifting the frame including the ramp, around the pivoting point or (possibly) pivoting points.
When the pair of wheels is connected to the frame via a common axle, the common axle is connected to the frame via a pivoting point located away from the one wheel and close to the other wheel.
When the pair of wheels is connected to the frame via two individual axles, each connected to a wheel, (at least) one of those axles is connected to the frame via a pivoting point located at the end away from the wheel.
The lowering means are arranged to engage to the frame and the axle and to control and vary the mutual distance between them, in order to enable lowering and lifting the frame for loading and unloading the trailer via the ramp.
Preferably, the lowering means comprise locking means arranged to mutually lock the frame and the axle in the lifted position of the frame.
Finally, the trailer preferably comprises means for stowing the trailer in upright position, as well as displacement wheels, e.g. castor wheels, arranged for displacing the trailer in its upright position.
Hereinafter the invention will be elucidated more in detail .
Figures 1-3 illustrate a preferred embodiment of a trailer according to the invention;
Figure 4 shows an alternative implementation of the axle configuration.
The figures show a trailer 1 which is arranged for the transportation of a motor bike 2. The trailer 1 comprises a frame 3 including a draw bar 4 for connecting the trailer 1 to a vehicle (not shown), and a (chassis) ramp 5 extending mainly perpendicular to the direction of travel of the trailer. The trailer 1 further comprises a pair of wheels 6 connected to the frame 3 via either one common axle 7 or, alternatively, two individual axles (also called split axles) 7' (see figure 4), in either case preferably a suspension axle or suspension axles respectively.
The axle 7, or at least one of the axles 7' respectively, is connected to the frame 3 via a pivoting point 8 located away from one wheel 6 (the right one in the figures 1-3), or the wheel 6 (of the relevant split axle) respectively (see figure 4), and wherein lowering means 9 are provided, arranged for enabling lowering and lifting (see arrows 10) the frame 3 including the ramp, around the pivoting point 8 or, possibly (in the embodiment of figure 4), two pivoting points 8.
In the embodiment of figures 1-3 the pair of wheels 6 is connected to the frame 3 via a common axle 7 which is connected to the frame 3 via a pivoting point 8 located away from one wheel 6 (the right one in the figures 1-3) and close to the other wheel 6 (the left one in said figures), thus enabling the right wheel 6 to move freely up and down (see arrow 10) relative to the frame 3 around the pivoting point 8.
Figure 4 shows a trailer 1 having a pair of wheels 6 connected to the frame via two individual axles 6' (split axles), each connected to one wheel 6. In the shown configuration (at least) one of those axles is connected to the frame 3 via a pivoting point 8' located at the axle end away from the wheel 6, thus enabling the left (see figure 4) wheel 6 to move freely up and down (see arrow 10) relative to the frame 3 around the pivoting point 8. Also in this embodiment of figure 4, lowering means are provided, however not shown in the figure) arranged for enabling lowering and lifting (see arrows 10) the frame 3 including the ramp, around the pivoting point 8'. In the embodiment of figure 4, one or both split axles 7' may be enabled to move around a pivoting point 8'. When using two movable split axles 7', enabled to pivot around (two) pivoting points 8' the trailer 1 is enabled to be lowered and lifted completely vertically, while when using only one movable split axle 7' and one pivoting point 8', the trailer 1 will be lowered and lifted slantwise, like the configuration shown in the figures 1-3.
In either configuration the lowering means 9 are arranged to engage to the frame 3 and the axle 7, 7' and to control and vary the distance between them, in order to enable lowering and lifting the frame 3 for loading and unloading the trailer 3 via the ramp 5. The lowering means 9 in the embodiment shown in the figures 1-3 is in the form of a lift screw 9.
The lowering means 9 may comprise locking means 11, e.g. a lock knob or pin 11, which are arranged to mutually lock the frame 3 and the axle 7 in the lifted position of the frame 3.
Finally, the trailer 1 may comprise means for stowing the trailer in upright position (e.g. leaning against a wall with its drawing bar 4) and, preferably, comprise displace- ment wheels, e.g. castor wheels 12, arranged for displacing the trailer 1 in its upright position.
