Description
Sensor voor een massadebietmeterSensor for a mass flow meter
The invention relates to a sensor for a mass flow meter of the thermal type, which sensor comprises a flow tube through which a fluid can flow in operation, with a temperature sensor formed by a coil of resistance wire wound around the tube at a first (upstream) position A and a heater / temperature sensor formed by a coil of resistance wire wound around the tube in a second, downstream position, B, wherein the flow tube is mounted on a metal base and is located inside a cap placed on the base.
A known mass flow meter of the thermal type is described in EP-A 1139073. This known mass flow meter comprises a flow sensor in the form of a heat-conducting flow tube, provided with a resistance wire wound around the tube, which is used as a heat source (heater) and as a temperature sensor. acts, at a first position, and an upstream temperature sensor. A control circuit serves to keep the temperature difference between the temperature sensors constant at flow, whereby the mass flow rate of the fluid flowing through the tube is determined from data from the control circuit. This measurement method is called the Constant Temperature (CT) method.
A drawback of such a measuring system has been found to be that when there is a relatively low flow in the tube, an - undesired - dip occurs in the measuring signal.
The invention is based on the task of simply applying and providing universally applicable means to prevent the occurrence of this dip as much as possible. A sensor for a mass flow meter of the type mentioned in the preamble has for this purpose according to the invention that the foot has an upright edge around which the cap clamps and that the sensor comprises a flexible band of good heat-conducting material which is positioned at a position between the turns around at least a part of the circumference of the tube and is locally clamped between the cap and the foot or the raised edge of the foot.
30 Het arrangeren van een flexibele band van goed warmtegeleidend materi aal, zoals bijv. koperfolie, zoals boven beschreven, in de sensor volgens de uit-Arranging a flexible band of good heat-conducting material, such as, for example, copper foil, as described above, in the sensor according to the

The invention provides in the desired manner that with no or low flows the temperature at the temperature sensor does not rise due to heat conduction through the tube.
A first advantageous aspect here is that the tape can be stuck around tubes of different diameters, and is therefore universally applicable.
A second advantageous aspect is that the ends of the band are clamped between the metal cap and the foot or a raised edge on the foot of the sensor housing. The clamping takes place during the sliding of the hood on the foot. Therefore, no separate manufacturing step is required to bring the belt into heat-conducting contact with the foot or the cap, respectively. It is possible to make the flexible band of good heat-conducting material by means of e.g. attach a (drop of) thermal paste to the tube. However, a practical embodiment is characterized in that the flexible tape of good heat-conducting material is self-adhesive, such as, for example, a self-adhesive copper foil. A self-adhesive flexible tape or foil can not only be applied directly over as large a contact surface of the tube as possible, but also offers the possibility of holding the tape or foil in place before and during clamping that during mounting from the hood.
A third advantageous aspect is that the strip can consist of one or more sub-strips provided with an adhesive layer and which are glued together. By selecting the number of sub-strips (and optionally the width thereof) a desired heat dissipation characteristic of the tire can be set. In addition, a belt with, for example, four sub-strips adhered to each other is more flexible than a single belt with a thickness equal to that of the four sub-strips together. This is advantageous both when the tape is glued tightly around the tube and when clamping the tape between the hood and the foot. The flexible belt of good heat-conducting material can be used in various ways within the scope of the invention. E.g. For example, the flexible tape of good heat-conducting material may be stuck around the pipe in the form of a loop, the part of the tape running towards the pipe and the part of the pipe falling on the pipe being adhered to each other.
According to a preferred form, however, the flexible tape of good heat-conducting material has two ends, one end of which is glued around at least a part of the circumference of the flow tube at a position between the 3 turns and the other end between the cap and the foot or the raised edge of the foot is clamped.
For practical applications, a flexible band of good heat-conducting material has been found to be suitable, the thermal resistance of which between the tube and the base is between 100 and 1000 times smaller than the thermal resistance of the tube along a path between the flexible band of good heat-conducting material and the base.
The tube can in particular be U-shaped with two legs and a connecting piece and the foot can have two bores, through which the ends of the legs of the U-shaped tube run.
The invention also relates to a method for providing a sensor for a thermal flow meter, wherein a U-shaped tube with two windings situated at a predetermined distance from each other, a temperature sensor coil and a heater / temperature sensor coil, with the ends of the legs of the U are inserted into openings of a foot and wherein a flexible band of good heat-conducting material is glued between a place on the tube between the windings and the foot, which band is placed locally between the cap and the foot or the raised edge of the foot are clamped, the thermal resistance of the tube being determined along a path between the flexible band of good heat-conducting material and the foot, and wherein the parameters of the flexible band of good heat-conducting material should be chosen such that the thermal resistance of the band between the tube and the foot is between 100 and 1000 times less In other words, thermal resistance of the tube along a path between the flexible band of good heat-conducting material and the foot.
These and other aspects of the invention will be further elucidated with reference to the drawing.

It relates in the first instance to a metal flow sensor cap 1 which, together with a metal flow sensor foot 7, forms a flow sensor housing, a capillary U-shaped (flow) tube 5 on which two turns of resistance wire are wound, which tube 5 fastens. is mounted on a printed circuit board (pcb) 4 for connecting said resistors to a 4-pin connector 6. The base 7 is provided with a raised edge 15 enclosing a rectangle with protrusions on the ends of the long sides between which protrusions the tube 5 and the pcb 4 are attached. During assembly, the ends of the tube are inserted through two bores provided in the base 7 (not visible in Fig. 1) and glued therein.
Verder kan, zoals nog nader zal worden toegelicht, bij het assembleren gebruik worden gemaakt van een of meer stukjes kunststof folie 2, een (dubbel) gevouwen stukje polyurethaan isolatieschuim 3 en rubberen capillaire afdichtingen 8.Furthermore, as will be further explained, one or more pieces of plastic film 2, a (double) folded piece of polyurethane insulating foam 3 and rubber capillary seals 8 can be used during assembly.
In a preferred form of a sensor according to the invention, a flexible tape 9 of good heat-conducting material, such as in particular copper foil, is used which is provided with a layer of glue on one side. This will be arranged in such a way that in the assembled state it can dissipate heat from the area between the windings on the tube 5 to the housing. The tape 9 may optionally consist of a number (for example 4) of sub strips (or films) glued onto each other, each of which is provided with a line layer. A quadruple foil is commercially available under the name Chromerics CHO foil. The number of layers is inter alia dependent on the amount of heat that must be removed.
In assembly, as shown in Fig. 2, a U-shaped capillary tube 5 is provided with two legs that are bent at right angles. On the connecting leg 10 of the tube, a (single-layer) heater resistor Rh and a (multi-layer) sensor resistor Rs are wound at a predetermined distance from each other. The legs of the U-shaped tube 5 are attached to a printed circuit board 4 with corresponding sides. The two connection wires of the heater resistor and the two connection wires of the sensor resistor are soldered to four input contacts of the PCB. The output contact points of the PCB are connected via connecting wires with a 4-pin connector 6.
A flexible tape 9 of self-adhesive copper foil is glued tightly around the tube 5, at a position between the heater resistor Rh and the sensor resistor Rs, the part of the strip 9 leading to the tube and the part of the strip running off the tube 9 stick together. The width and the positioning 20 of the band 9 are such that it does not touch the heater resistance and the sensor resistance. The length of the belt 9 is such that the free end when the cap 1 and the base 7 are joined together is clamped between the sensor cap 1 and the sensor base 7.
In a next step, the whole of the tube 5 provided with band 9 with resistors Rh and Rs and the PCB 4 is mounted on the sensor foot 7; see Fig. 3A and 3B. Thereby the ends of the legs of the tube 5 are inserted through bores 11,12 in the foot 7 and the ends of the PCB 4 come between projections 13,13a; 14,14a lie on the ends of the long sides of the raised edge 15 of the sensor foot 7. The legs of the tube 5 are glued down in the bores 11,12. The composition of the glue is such that it serves as a gas obstruction and as mechanical locking of the tube 5 in the base 7. One side of the PCB 4 is also glued to the protrusions of the upright edge 15 of the base 7. After the mounting the tube 5 in the base 7, the flexible copper foil band 9 is placed in position as shown in FIG. 4 6 and FIG. 8. This means that the tape 9 is hung over the side of the raised edge of the sensor foot 7 on the side of the PCB 4 which is remote from the side where the connection contacts and the connection wires are located. In addition to the raised edge 15, there is a step-shaped part (step) 16 of the sensor foot 7. Preferably, the flexible band also falls over this step-shaped part 16.
The connecting wires from the PCB 4 to the pin connector 6 are embedded between two pieces of plastic tape 2 and fed out via a local recess / chamfer on the hood and / or the base.
The sensor cap 1 is slid over the raised edge 15 so far that it encounters the recess. The flexible band 9 is thereby clamped between the cap 1 and the upright edge 15 and, depending on its length, also between the underside of the cap edge and the step-shaped profile (step) 16 of the foot 7.
In order to limit the occurrence of air flows in the sensor, a double-folded piece of (polyurethane) foam 3 can be fitted around the tube 5 before the cap 1 is placed. Sliding the cap 1 over the edge of the foot and fitting the foam body 3 is explained with reference to Figs. 8.
The bores in the underside of the base 7 each open into a chamber 17, 20 and 18 respectively (see Fig. 6). These chambers accommodate annular sealing seals 8. These are slid onto the legs of the tube 5 inserted through the bores in the foot (see Fig. 3b).
The operation of the copper foil band at the sensor according to the invention is based on the following insight: the temperature between temperature sensor 25 and heater (heating element) is kept constant with the CT (Constant Temperature) flow measurement method used. This requires a certain capacity. This capacity is a measure of the flow. Power control is provided to keep the temperature difference constant. However, when there is no or relatively low flow, the power with which the heating element is heated, apart from, for example, radiation losses, is essentially drained by conduction through the tube. As a result, the temperature at the temperature sensor (at position A) rises and feedback is created in the power control, which increases the required power. Only with a certain flow will enough heat be dissipated via the fluid 7 so that the temperature of the sensor is no longer influenced by the heating element. From zero flow to this point the required power will decrease and above that the required power will increase again. This effect causes an unwanted dip in the measurement signal. The band of copper foil glued around the tube and clamped between the cap and the edge of the foot now prevents the temperature sensor from rising at a temperature sensor due to conduction through the tube. Because the band of copper foil can be dimensioned in such a way that it has a better temperature conduction than the tube, the temperature between temperature sensor and heater element 10 is almost equalized with the temperature of the foot. The dip in the measurement signal is thereby considerably reduced or even eliminated.
A calculation example on a sensor based on Figs. 2, 3a and 3b, and 8 has shown that the thermal resistance of a 4-layer copper foil band (4 layers of copper foil glued together: Chromerics CHO foil) with a length of 15 between the tube and the 7 mm base. (total length 10 mm. because the band is around the tube and there is also a bit over the foot), a thickness of 0.5 mm. and a width of 2.5 mm was approximately 500 times lower than the thermal resistance of the used stainless steel (stainless steel) flow sensor tube with a wall thickness of 0.2 mm and a length of 30 mm. measured from the tire to the foot.
Briefly summarized, the invention relates to a sensor for a mass flow meter of the thermal type, which sensor comprises a flow tube with a temperature sensor and a heater / temperature sensor placed at a predetermined distance therefrom, said flow tube mounted on a metal base and located within a metal cap placed on the base.
